Ann and Abby by the Delvena Theatre Company

The Delvena Theatre Company will return to present Ann and Abby at the Abington Public Library, on Thursday, October 17, at 7:00 PM. How did two fifties-era Iowan housewives, who performed songs by the Andrews Sisters and were married on the same day, become two of the most influential advice columnists of all time? Ann and Abby, a live 3-person comedy, examines how chutzpah, hard work and a bit of luck propelled the twins into becoming two of the most beloved and respected women of the 20th century. With humor, snappy one-liners and a whole lot of love, Abby and Ann will dole out advice to the audience on the proper way to hang toilet paper, how to stop your husband from wearing a Tarzan suit and how not to be a lovelorn teen. The twins will also provide insights into how they, as children of immigrant parents, remained the world’s most popular advisers for over 50 years.

Discussion with the audience will follow the performance. An edutainment production, written by Lynne Moulton, the show will feature Lynne Moulton, Fran Baron and Joseph Zamparelli.  The Delvena Theatre Company has been doing to-go shows for the last several years at various venues throughout the New England area.

Registration is not necessary for this program; sixty adults and teens (age sixteen and older) will be accommodated at this program on a first-to-arrive basis. This program is funded by State Aid

to Public Libraries.

Abington Author Nicole Asselin - Murder at First Pitch

Love baseball?  Love books set in Abington?  Join us on Tuesday October 29 at 7:00 PM when Abington resident, Nicole Asselin, will speak about her first novel, Murder at First Pitch.  Nicole is a life-long Red Sox fan and her debut novel blends her love of baseball with her passion for mysteries.  This story features an Independent League Baseball team, the Abington Armadillos.  Madeline, the main character returns to Abington to accept her place in the family baseball legacy.  The author says that “the first time Madeline enters the ballpark she discovers the brutally bludgeoned body of a prospective scout in the visitor’s dugout. Using her position in the team’s front office, she learns more about the victim and identifies potential suspects, though she may have bitten off more than she can chew,”  Books will be available for purchase and signing after the event.

Registration is not necessary and sixty people will be accomodated on a first-to-arrive basis.  This program is provided through the generosity of the author.  The Friends of the Library will offer light refreshments.

Dr. Gary Hylander discusses The Battle of the Bulge

Historian and lecturer Dr. Gary Hylander will discuss the epic World War II Battle of the Bulge.  This battle, in December 1944, marked the last German offensive of the war in Europe.  Over the objections of his generals, Hitler ordered a massive counter-attack against Allied forces in the area of the Ardennes Forest.  Hitler's plan was to split the Anglo-American front and to seek a negotiated peace in the West.  With over 19,000 Americans killed, the Battle of the Bulge was the largest and bloodiest battle experienced by American forces in all of World War II.

Registration is not necessary for this lecture; up to 60 adults and older teens (age 16 and up) will be accomodated on a first-to-arrive basis.  This program is provided with State Aid to Public Libraries funds.  Questions may be directed to Library Director Deborah Grimmett at 781-982-2139, or via email at ablib@ocln.org.

Owls of New England with Peter Christoph

The Abington Public Library is pleased to welcome back Nature Photographer Peter Christoph who will present Discover the Owls of New England on Tuesday, December 3 at 7:00 PM. In this captivating presentation, Peter delivers stunning photographs of his favorite owls combined with stories that entertain, educate and inspire the audience. You’ll learn the secrets Peter uses to find and photograph these same owls in the wild in their natural habitat! Eight species of expected owls in New England include: Great Horned, Barred, and Eastern Screech – all year- round residents and fairly easy to spot. Long-eared, Short-eared, and Snowy are winter migrants and breed far north of us. Northern Saw-whet Owls do breed in New England but are quite small and rarely seen. Barn Owls have bred in New England but are the toughest of all to find. He’ll wrap up this exceptional wildlife program with beautiful images of a vagrant migrant- a rare visitor called the Great Gray Owl.

Registration is not necessary for this program; sixty attendees will be accommodated at this program on a first-to-arrive basis. This program is funded by State Aid to Public Libraries.
