Owls of New England with Peter Christoph

The Abington Public Library is pleased to welcome back Nature Photographer Peter Christoph who will present Discover the Owls of New England on Tuesday, January 28 at 7:00 PM. In this captivating presentation, Peter delivers stunning photographs of his favorite owls combined with stories that entertain, educate and inspire the audience. You’ll learn the secrets Peter uses to find and photograph these same owls in the wild in their natural habitat! Eight species of expected owls in New England include: Great Horned, Barred, and Eastern Screech – all year- round residents and fairly easy to spot. Long-eared, Short-eared, and Snowy are winter migrants and breed far north of us. Northern Saw-whet Owls do breed in New England but are quite small and rarely seen. Barn Owls have bred in New England but are the toughest of all to find. He’ll wrap up this exceptional wildlife program with beautiful images of a vagrant migrant- a rare visitor called the Great Gray Owl.

Registration is not necessary for this program; sixty attendees will be accommodated at this program on a first-to-arrive basis. This program is funded by State Aid to Public Libraries.

Library Closed for Carpeting Project

Library Closed February 18 through March 3 for Carpeting Project

Funding for replacing the Library’s 22 year old carpeting was included in this year’s Capital Plan.  This is a large project, requiring moving of furniture, books and bookshelves, removal of the old carpet, laying of new carpet tiles throughout the Library, and finally replacement of furnishings, bookshelves and books.  For safety and liability reasons, the Library will be closed to the public during the project, from Tuesday February 18 through Tuesday March 3.

No Abington books or other library materials will be due while we are closed.  You may return items in our exterior book drop or enjoy the extra loan time, and remember that Abington items are all fine-free.

Books received from other OCLN libraries may be due while we are closed, and fines will be assessed according to the policy of the library that owns the book.   You may return these materials in our exterior book drop, or take them to a neighboring library such as Rockland, Whitman or Holbrook.  Please remember that the Tufts Library in Weymouth is closed for a new building project, and that the Fogg Library in South Weymouth has limited services.

If you have placed a hold on a book and it becomes available while we are closed the book will be sent to the Rockland Memorial Library and you may pick your item up in Rockland.  You must bring your library card with you to obtain your hold.  When we re-open, holds will be sent back to Abington for pick-up here.  We thank our colleagues at the Rockland Memorial Library for providing this service for us.

If you prefer, you may suspend your holds while we are closed.  You will not lose your place in the holds queue.  If you want your holds suspended, please ask us at the desk, and we will be happy to suspend them for you.  You may also suspend your own holds by logging in to the catalog and using the “My Account” feature.

Please take this opportunity to visit one of the other libraries in the Old Colony Library Network.  We will miss you, and look forward to welcoming you when we re-open.  Please remember that the Fogg Library in South Weymouth does not have a full collection, but is serving as Weymouth’s children’s library during their new building project.  Your OCLN card may be used at any OCLN public library as long as your card is in good standing. Be sure to bring your library card with you!

Coupon-style museum passes for use from February 18 through March 4 MUST be picked up between Monday February 10 and Saturday February 15, before the Library closes.   Museum passes which must be returned to us will not be available for reservation during this time period.

Electronic resources will continue to be available from hoopla and Overdrive while we are closed.  If you haven’t borrowed an eBook, this is a great opportunity for you to try something new.

We will not be answering the telephone while we are closed.  If you have an urgent question please leave a voicemail at 871-982-2139, or email us at ablib@ocln.org, and we will reply to you when we can.  The library staff will be packing, moving and unpacking materials during the course of the carpeting project and we cannot guarantee a speedy response.  Thank you for your understanding.
