Political Free Speech in Homeowner Associations: Impact of SB407 on the 2018 Elections

"Political Free Speech in Homeowner Associations: Impact of SB407 on the 2018  Elections” with Senator Bob Wieckowski

Alameda and Santa Clara counties together have more than 5000 homeowner associations with countless voters living in them. In the past, however, candidates for public office have had a tough time getting personal access to those voters.  Likewise, homeowners have had a hard time inviting candidates onto association grounds to discuss election issues.

Senator Bob Wieckowski’s legislation SB407 aims to change that.

Now law as of January 1, 2018 declares that

“It is the intent of the Legislature to ensure that members and residents of common interest developments have the ability to exercise their rights under law to peacefully assemble and freely communicate with one another and with others with respect to common interest development living or for social, political, or educational purposes,” begins SB407.

Come hear Senator Wieckowski talk about what the new law means for association homeowners.

  • Will they now be able to invite candidates for public office onto association grounds?
  • Will candidates for public office have an easier time reaching the thousands of voters living in Alameda and Contra Costa associations?
  • Also hear from the courageous homeowners whose stories inspired SB407.
  • Homeowners can learn how to enforce their SB407 rights in small claims court.
  • Win one of the CCHAL Contributing Memberships to be given away on the 27th.  (Have to be present to win.)
