AUTHOR TALK: EDWARD LODI ON THE PEQUOT WAR--Meeting Room

In 1637 the Puritans of Massachusetts and the fledgling colony of Connecticut declared war on the Pequot Indians—the most powerful of all the New England tribes. What had the Pequots done to incur the wrath of the English? Why did the Narragansetts and Mohegans side with the English? What role did the Dutch play in the war? Why did the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony refuse Massachusetts’ request for assistance? Author Edward Lodi provides answers to these and other questions.

Sponsored by the Friends of Pine Hawk.

BOOK DISCUSSION: AMERICAN NATIONS--Meeting Room

This year's Friends of Pine Hawk book discussion is on American Nations : A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America by Colin Woodard, an illuminating history of North America's eleven rival cultural regions that explodes the red state-blue state myth. Woodard takes readers on a journey through the history of this fractured continent and the rivalries and alliances between its component nations, which conform to neither state nor international boundaries. He illustrates and explains why "American" values vary sharply from one region to another. Copies of the book will be available at the circulation desk in late September.

NASHOBA HILL: VISION QUEST AND NASHOBAH PLANTATION--Meeting Room

There is a very special local hill, a hill that roars. The Indians thought the winds were pent inside; the Colonials said it sounded like cannons; some folks climbed it to await the rapture; and others erected a stone altar on its top.  It’s a well-known hill, famed these days for its ski slopes.  But its history is far more strange, and ongoing, than anything that has ever swooshed down its slopes or taken the chair-lift. Gather around and hear the strange tale of Nashoba Hill: of a dark king under the mountain and an island village of vision quests and shamans.

D. V. Boudillion has been presenting and writing on the early Colonial and Native history of the Nashobah Plantation (Praying Indian Village) area since 1999. His work is featured in the NEARA Journal, Littleton Massachusetts 1714-2014, and Weird Massachusetts. His two volume local history book, Littleton History 1654-1720, Including Nashobah Plantation will be published soon. He works in the engineering field and is a Littleton resident.

STONE PRAYERS: NATIVE AMERICAN STONE CONSTRUCTIONS OF THE EASTERN SEABOARD--Meeting Room

Dr. Curtiss Hoffman examines the controversy surrounding the thousands of stone monuments scattered through the fields and woodlands of the eastern seaboard. Some archaeologists claim that they are all the result of European settlers clearing land; some antiquarians claim that they were built by pre-Columbian voyagers from across the Atlantic; others consider them to be the work of indigenous people, both before and after European contact. There have even been claims by some archaeologists that the stones are of natural origin, due to glaciers or downslope erosion. Recently, the descendant populations of Native Americans have come forward and claimed these as their own sacred sites, as forms of prayers in stone.

This talk examines the above four hypotheses quantitatively, in light of a very robust database of 5,550 sites from Georgia to Nova Scotia. It presents evidence which strongly disconfirms all but the indigenous construction hypothesis for the overwhelming majority of the sites.

Dr. Hoffman has been a professor at Bridgewater State University since 1978, teaching introductory and advanced courses in archaeology of North America and the Middle East. He is a long-established member of the Massachusetts Archaeological Society, and serves on the Board of Trustees for the Robbins Museum of Archaeology.

Tonight's title is The Merchants of Doubt: How a Handful of Scientists Obscured the Truth on Issues from Tobacco Smoke to Global Warming by Naomi Oreskes and Eric M. Conway.  The book relates how a loose-knit group of high-level scientists and scientific advisers, with deep connections in politics and industry, ran effective campaigns to mislead the public and deny well-established scientific knowledge over four decades.

All are welcome; copies of the book are available at the circulation desk in late October.
