Fake News February - Where Do You Get Your News

Whether you get your news from a print source, a website, or a podcast, there is no doubt the options for consumers of news has increased tremendously. As the Auburn Public Library kicks off its month long series of programs on “fake news”, the library invites you to come and share how you get your news, what sources you trust and how you decide what is true or fake.  Refreshments and some light snacks will be available.

The Auburn Public Library was one of just five public libraries from across the country to be selected for the Media Literacy @ Your Library project. The American Library Association (ALA) and the Center for News Literacy @ Stony Brook University initiated the pilot program to better enable library workers to help their adult patrons become more critical news consumers.

Screening of the Film: Network

The Auburn Public Library continues its series of programs on “fake news” with a screening of the 1976 film Network.  In this lauded satire, veteran news anchorman Howard Beale (Peter Finch) discovers that he's being put out to pasture, and he's none too happy about it. After threatening to shoot himself on live television, he instead launches into an angry televised rant, which turns out to be a huge ratings boost for the UBS network. This stunt allows ambitious producer Diana Christensen (Faye Dunaway) to develop even more outrageous programming, a concept that she takes to unsettling extremes turning the news into an entertainment spectacle.

Screening of Film: Page One

The Auburn Public Library continues its series of programs on “fake news” with a screening of the film Page One.  By looking into the lives and daily tasks of three writers at the New York Times, this documentary explores the ways that the Internet has changed print media. The journalists include up-and-comer Brian Stelter, established yet restless reporter Tim Arango and David Carr, an outspoken warhorse with a volatile temper. Covering 12 months of life at the Times, the film reveals the difficulties in maintaining the ways of traditional journalism in a changing news environment.
