Preschool Story Alphabet Explorers

Join our preschool program where children ages 3-5 can explore stories through songs, retellings, STEM activities and a craft.  A new letter of the alphabet will be introduced each week.  Our October 6 storytime will host a picture book author/illustrator (see Oct. 6 event listing for details).  No registration required.

Presented by The Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh

A family astronomy presentation followed by guided viewing of the wonders of the night sky through telescopes owned by AAAP volunteer members.  Bring your own binoculars if you have them! Many night sky objects can be seen through 10x50 binoculars! Some of the evening viewing objects through telescopes will include the Crescent Moon (including craters, mountains and empty sea beds), Saturn (with its rings will be visible in the Southern sky) and the Summer Triangle (the triangle formed by the stars Vega, Deneb and Altair) and more! A great educational experience for all ages! This event will be held at the library.  Registration required.

Beginner Flute Lessons
10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

As a continuation of our introductory KinderFlute classes, we will be offering beginner flute lessons to children ages 4-9! Group lessons are a great way to get a jump start with music through fun games and learning with friends. Music theory and playing the flute will be taught with KinderFlute teacher in training Katie Shesko. This is a four-week session for only $30! There is also a pay-as-you-go option available for $9/class.  If interest is high, we will continue beyond the initial four-week session.  There is a maximum of 12 students per class. Registration required. If registering for the 4-week session, you only need register ONCE on the Sept. 23 date.  If registering for pay-as-you-go, please register for each individual Saturday. Payment due before or at first class by cash, check or credit card. To pay in advance by credit card, please visit Katie’s website at www.katieshesko.com/online-registration

Options for the instrument include: rent to own through our certified instructor (please let us know if this is your option so that your flute can be here in time), bringing your own flue, or borrowing a flute during class time (only a few available).

Paws for a Cause with Animal Friends
11:00 AM - 11:45 AM

We welcome Animal Friends back to the library for our fall program lineup! Children will have the opportunity to meet and read aloud to an approved literacy cat or dog, hear stories and participate in a literacy activity.  Readers of all ages and abilities are welcomed! Because all visits are on a volunteer basis, we ask all participants to bring along one item from the Animal Friends Supply Drive list which can be found here.  Registration required.

Saturdays at 11:00 am: September 23, October 28, November 18 and December 16 (as part of our Spirit of the Season Holiday Party)

Join us for a night of family art using various techniques and leave with a masterpiece designed by your entire family! We will provide all of the supplies and art smocks...your family provides the creativity and fun! No age limit requirements.  A “how to draw” segment will be included in each program.  Registration required for each class.

A storytime specifically geared for toddlers who are 24-36 months old with a caregiver. We will read great stories, sing songs, and have plenty of music, movement, and fun that encourages your toddler’s language and development skills! Local Author Book Talk - Dan J. Kirk

Meet local author Dan J. Kirk, who recently published a fascinating book of fiction, entitled Between the Innings, set in Cooperstown, NY. His characters bond through the game of baseball, and the story includes a riveting mystery. It crackles with the intensity of a high fastball and serves as an ode to the sport of baseball itself. Copies of Dan’s book will be available for purchase.  Light refreshments will be served. Registration is not required.
