Author Hope Rowan
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Hope Rowan will discuss the inspiration behind her kids’ hiking guide, as well as speaking to the importance of getting kids
outdoors. The book follows a fictional young girl and her family on their vacation to Acadia National Park and Mount Desert
Island. Twelve-year- old Hattie describes ten different hiking trails, giving details of everything she sees, hears, smells, and
feels while hiking with her family. The guidebook also includes hiking tips, rainy-day ideas, and a resource list, plus full-color
trail maps, photographs, and illustrated field notes by Maine artist Jada Fitch.

The hiking guide Includes:
-Large overview map of Mount Desert Island
-Color trail maps of each hike, with trails marked by level of difficulty
-Photos of each hike
-Illustrations and field notes of animals and plants you might see on each hike
-Hiking and safety tips
-Rainy-day resources and ideas

Hope Rowan likes looking under seaweed, mucking around in dirt, and studying maps. She has spent the past fifteen years
creating, designing, and teaching children about maps as a certified Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Professional.
Her first tent camping in Maine was in a crib and she was introduced to the trails of Acadia from her father’s shoulders.
Hope’s vacation experiences in Acadia led her to attend the College of the Atlantic where she received an advanced degree
in Human Ecology. Now she lives on Mount Desert Island with Acadia National Park as her backyard.

The event will include book sales and signing.

Historic Fort George Disputed Territory 1779-1783 - workshops and presentations
11:45 AM - 3:00 PM

Fort George in Castine, Maine is on the National Register of Historic Places due to the important role it played in the American Revolution.  Now only earthen works show its impressive footprint and the Friends of Castine Fortifications group is working on bringing more prominence to the fascinating history of Fort George.  The Bangor Public Library and the Friends of Fort George Fortifications are pleased to promote the work done at this historic site and of the encampment weekend on September 8 and 9, 2018.

This afternoon session provides ample time to see the impressive displays of every-day life of a 74th Highland soldier and his family stationed at Fort George in today's Castine between 1779 and 1783.

What kind of food was available? How was clothing constructed?  How do we know what life was like?

Join us for answers to these questions. Ask your own questions of the presenters. Enjoy the displays and participate in the presentation and the handiwork. Taste the food that was known and available during the time period.

11:45 - 3:00  Displays of materials for clothing and finished garments. Food rations displays for Scottish and Colonial Patriot soldiers, food and drinking vessels, Military kit for a Scottish Private soldier, timeline of Scottish military presence at Fort George.

Sherry Davis, director of the Maine Forest and Logging Museum--Leonard's Mills, known for her collection of reproduction historic clothing and events at the museum.             Don and Ann McDougal, reenactors with the 74th Highlanders.  Experts in the history of life of the Scottish troops at Fort George between 1779 and 1783.

12:00 - 12:30 (time may change) Embroidery and sewing demonstrations - audience participation

Ardeana Hamlin will show hand-stitching of different types.  Continue stitching while listening to more presentations.  Ardeana Hamlin is a local author and well-known sewing expert.

Rachel Snell, history professor at the University of Maine specializing in food of the Colonial era.

Presenter Charles Lagerbom will look at how to make early Maine historical events, people, and places come to life for students studying this material. Hand-outs, rubrics, discussions on expectations wll help educators and the general public visualize how students may be able to show understanding and measurable achievement with historic topics.

MAINE CHAPTER OF THE APPALACHIAN MOUNTAIN CLUB PRESENTS

Kenny Wing and Alan Burnell on the town that was drowned when Flagstaff Lake was created

~~The creation of Flagstaff Lake wrote a sad chapter in our history.  The three villages of Bigelow, Dead River and Flagstaff were inundated and their residents forced to relocate and scatter.  Buildings, most of them purchased by CMP prior to the gates in the dam being closed, were either razed, sold, or moved by their owners.  Some buildings were left to be flooded.  Long Falls Dam was constructed in 1948 and 1949 and impounds an area of approximately 22,000 acres.
Alan Burnell and Kenny Wing, lifelong Mainers have had a shared passion for the story. They will share the photos and storied from their book, Lost Villages of Flagstaff Lake.

Author talk-William Andrews-Maine Myteries
5:30 PM - 7:30 PM

William D. Andrews moved to Maine in 1989 to become president of Westbrook College.  The college’s merger with the University of New England freed him to pursue his long held ambition to write.  He has since published three mysteries in the Julie Williams series, all with Islandport Press:  Stealing History (2006), Breaking Ground (2011), and Mapping Murder (2017).

He earned a B.A. in English from the University of Pittsburgh, a Ph.D. in American Civilization from the University of Pennsylvania, and an MBA from Penn’s Wharton School. He is the past president of the board of trustees of the Bethel Historical Society and a former director of the Mahoosuc Land Trust. He and his wife split their time between their home in Newry and condo in Portland. When he isn’t writing, he skis, snowshoes, bikes, boats, cooks and spends as much time as possible with his two-year old granddaughter.

Start, Manage, & Grow Your Business with ReferenceUSA - Lunch & Learn
12:00 PM - 1:30 PM

Guest speaker, TJ Pridell, with ReferenceUSA will be hosting an interactive lead generation marketing seminar catering to the Cromwell business community.  To accommodate the needs of business owners, sales & marketing representatives and job seekers, Bangor Public Library is offering a service called ReferenceUSA, an online provider of business and consumer research.

ReferenceUSA helps library users create effective marketing plans, conduct essential competitive analysis, raise funds and locate people in order to expand & grow their book of business. The online database provides real-time access to more than 44 million businesses and 280 million consumers.

Bangor Public Library cardholders may access this resource from within the library or at home or work with Internet access. The database features ten detailed modules of information: “US Business”, “US New Business”, “US Historical Business”, “Canadian Business”, “US Healthcare”, “US Consumers/Lifestyles”, “US Standard White Pages”, “US New Movers/Homeowners”, “Canadian White Pages”, & “US Jobs/Internships”.

Users can select a location and radius to search through a database of millions of businesses and locate direct business contact names. Many entries also include links to job postings.

Students can utilize ReferenceUSA to find articles for research on businesses and find data summaries to profile neighborhoods, cities and states, as well as researching demographics by business type, sizes and median income.

Users can access ReferenceUSA at https://www.bpl.lib.me.us under “Research > Databases > ReferenceUSA” Members may log in by typing in their active library card number.  For more information, please contact the Reference Department at 207-947-8336.

Please join us to learn more about how you can assist your business in establishing and growing your book of business with ReferenceUSA!
