Graphic Novel Presentation-Nicholas Anderson
5:30 PM - 7:00 PM

Nicholas Anderson, the creator of Planet Ripple who also lives in Bangor, recently released the third in a graphic novel series about the difficulties of living with autism, other disabilities, and the ways people treat each other. Being autistic himself, Nick took issue with a few of the more embellishing portrayals of the condition and wanted to make one that felt more authentic so that other people can have a more grounded understanding despite the sci-fi backdrop.

To accomplish this, the protagonist Minnow needed to be relatable to people in general, not just those who have the condition. Just as no disabled person should be defined by their disability, there is more to Minnow than her quirks or some hidden super-ability. She's trying to make it through the day and find purpose like anyone else. What starts as a very personal struggle, springboards into a myriad of socially relevant topics presented through an atypical lens.

Find more information on the Planet Ripple website by clicking here.

Summer Music Series - October Gold
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

October Gold - Acoustick/Alternative

October Gold, an acoustic alt-folk duo based out of Montreal, is the latest collaboration of singer/songwriter Kit Soden and his partner in music (and life), violinist Aliza Thibodeau. This marriage of Soden's folksy roots and Thibodeau's classical sensibilities has created a unique sound that has been described as "painting your imagination with song."

Since 2010, October Gold has been quietly captivating audiences across North America and Europe. The release of their first album, Into the Silence, showed the depth of sound the duo had developed in such a short period of time, apparent as well in their recent follow-up.

Aside from the noticeable chemistry between these two emerging artists, October Gold has managed to bring together a collection of brilliant musicians during the recording of their albums. Over 20 different instruments came together to create the mythical symphonic sounds of Into the Silence, resulting in a combination of powerful orchestral emotions and knee- slapping, hoe-down riffs.

October Gold?s 2013 sophomore album, Bridge of the Sun, makes use of this rich, fully orchestrated sound, as well as the talents of author Steven Erikson. The album?s lyrics are derived from poetry scattered throughout Erikson?s best-selling series, ?The Malazan Book of the Fallen.? A concept album, Bridge of the Sun walks the line between imagination and reality, holding a special connection for Malazan fans while still standing on its own as an independent collection of songs.

October Gold has been hard at work this past year creating their new self-titled EP, recorded and mixed at McGill University, where both artists received training. The EP features the harmonies and lyricism that the couple is known for, and the beautiful poetry of Archibald Lampman and Thomas Moore.

October Gold continues to tour North America and Europe, and released October Gold - EP in November 2015.

For more information about October Gold visit their website or find them on Facebook

You may listen to or purchase October Gold music on their Bandcamp page.

Author talk-Elizabeth Garber: Implosion, A Memoir of an Architect’s Daughter
5:30 PM - 7:00 PM

Elizabeth Garber will talk about her father, visionary architect Woodie Garber, as she discusses how she came to write her memoir "Implosion."

Elizabeth Garber’s memoir, Implosion: A Memoir of an Architect’s Daughter, focuses on how her family was caught in a collision between modern architecture, radical social change, and madness in the turbulent 1960s and 1970s in Cincinnati. Her talk includes a slideshow of modern architecture designed by her father, the glass home where the family lived, and a mirror glass dormitory that would be imploded twenty years later.

Maine author Monica Wood, author of The One-in-a-Million Boy and When We Were the Kennedy’s said, “I was riveted by this story of an adoring daughter struggling to escape the dominance of her brilliant, charismatic father. Garber writes beautifully about the layered complications of family love.”

“…poetic and incisive…Many readers will see aspects of their own family histories in this powerful saga of trauma and healing. An alternately wistful and searing exploration of a troubled legacy.”       —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Summer Music Series - The Silver Duo

The Silver Duo - Cello and piano duo

(Indoors in the Lecture Hall)

Noreen Silver was born in Glasgow, Scotland. Her musical studies were nurtured in a family that appreciated artistic endeavor, and intellectual achievement. After studying at the Royal College of Music in London, Noreen spent a year in Geneva, Switzerland, studying with the great cellist Pierre Fournier. Later, a Rotary International Fellowship enabled her to study at the New England Conservatory, where she met her husband, pianist Phillip Silver.

Phillip Silver is an internationally acclaimed solo and collaborative artist. The Frankfurter Rundschau described his playing as “virtuosic,” Haaretz commented upon his “…superb technical ability that enthralled the audience with melody, lyricism and poetry,” while the Boston Globe called him “an international collaborative pianist of the first rank,” and the Jerusalem Post described him as “a superb accompanist whose work is marked by sensitivity, felicity of style and an inborn musicianship which unerringly directs him to the most appropriate musical gesture.” Phillip has performed in many of the world’s leading concert halls.

Summer Music Series-Andy & Judy Sing
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Andy & Judy Daigle - Folksingers and Songwriters

Andy & Judy are a Boston area folk duo who perform regularly at libraries, coffeehouses and concert venues throughout the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, and Great Lakes regions. Their original, lyric driven songs feature close harmonies blending Judy's evocative alto and Andy's rich baritone. Beginning instrumentally with a classic folk guitar base, Andy & Judy have deepened their sound through the addition of mandolin, banjo, piano, harmonica, ukulele, and percussion. Even though their songwriting style has its roots firmly planted in traditional and folk music, the influences of country, gospel and blues can be heard in their songs. This duo has released 4 CDs of original music. - Riverbend (2012), Dragonfly (2014), Follow Your Dream (2015) and This Old Town (2017) and is currently recording the fifth CD.

For more information about Andy & Judy visit their website.  Follow the Daigles on Facebook or ReverbNation.

Art Demonstration-Carol Michaud
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Mixed Media Storytelling Demonstration

Thursday, July 26

Noon in the Bleacher Area

Carol's work will be exhibiting in the Stairwell and Barbara McDade Galleries during the month of July.

To see examples of her work, click here to go to our exhibits web page.

The stories of the people and places from the Schoodic Peninsula have heavily influenced Carol's artwork. The oil paintings and mixed
media pieces in this show are an example of life as experienced by the artists' hometown memories. The folklore class at the University of Maine coupled with an inheritance of vintage family photographs sparked an idea that has resulted in this body of work. This storytelling format has allowed the artist to depict a time, place and way of life that has vanished. The collection, format and media has grown and changed over the 10 years but the narrative is still the same. The only barrier to making this work has been the discovery of media, materials and how to use them. Design work was influenced through formal instruction at the University of Maine, Venice Art Center and many private and group lessons with professional artists. Carol has taught mixed media storytelling classes over the years and has found teaching to be a valuable tool in learning. The goal of this work is to transport the viewer to a long ago lost time and to help the viewer tap into their own personal stories and history.

Finding True North, oil paintings and mixed media works that focus on stories of life on the coast of Maine.  Some pieces are timeless and others include people, places and objects that are now only memories.  History is constantly reinventing itself, perhaps this show will remind the viewer of their own special  people and places.

Carol builds narrative art characterized by everyday people, places and objects based mostly on the Schoodic Peninsula in Maine. Stories are harvested from the sea and the community. The process begins long before the brush hits the canvas. She builds a story over time incorporating considerable research and the collection of stories, ephemera and photographs.

"I paint with oils, encaustics and mixed media collage. I focus on light, texture and color to evoke feelings and memories. Plein air oil painting grants me the opportunity to create an atmospheric snapshot. I relish the process of building a story. When I      undertake a project I enjoy daily progress to merge the visual and the narrative. I know the piece is complete when my initial      response is to the condition of the light and color.  When people see my work I'd like for them to be excited to share their          feelings about the work and their stories and ideas."

Carol's work will be exhibiting in the Stairwell and Barbara McDade Galleries during the month of June.

The Pride of Bangor
7:30 PM - 9:30 PM

~~Enjoy the world premiere of THE PRIDE OF BANGOR [or What Not to Wear], a one-act history play by Laura Emack, about former Bangor mayor Patricia Blanchette. Long-time residents will recall her very public battle with shock jock Don Imus over the proper wardrobe for the Paul Bunyan statue.

This event is offered in conjunction with the 1st Friday Downtown Art Walk on August 3, 2018. Suggested donation of $5 will go to the Barbara A. McDade Endowment Fund to purchase books.

THE PRIDE OF BANGOR [or What Not to Wear] is Laura's third history play set in Maine. THE DECONSTRUCTION OF GEORGE QUIMBY was presented as a staged reading in May 2007 at Penobscot Theatre's "Northern Writes New Play Festival" in Bangor, and in March 2008 by Belfast Maskers. BROKEN BRIDGES, set in Prospect, honors the town's first female selectman and was performed on Prospect History Day in September 2015.

Author talk- 50 Ways to be a Mainer with Capt. Billy C
5:30 PM - 7:00 PM

50 Ways to be a Mainer

Captain Billy C was born in the Midwest and spent most of his life in one of the flattest states in the country.  He decided that wasn’t flat enough and moved to the flattest state in the country – Florida.  In 1989, he was introduced to the coast of Maine by his future wife Jenni Smith whose family (the Marshall Smiths) had been coming to Surry since the early 1940’s.  Since that time, Captain Billy has spent every summer and many Christmases in Surry, on Newbury Neck.

While Captain Billy is not a licensed sea captain, he has taken hundreds of people out onto the waters of Union River and Blue Hill Bay to show them lighthouses and seals.  He has also officiated at least a dozen weddings.  In a real sense he married his father-in-law, Marshall Smith, and also his son.  But those stories are for another book.

Captain Billy has a degree in history and, as a world traveler (he has been to six continents and over 55 countries), he found Maine’s culture and people to be pleasantly unique.  The more he got to know people in Maine and experienced the culture, the more he wanted to share his observations with the world.

Captain Billy has always loved humor and humorous stories.  For several years Captain Billy studied Improv at Second City and Victory Gardens Theater.  He also tried his hand at stand-up comedy and took a class that culminated in an 8-minute original routine that he performed at Zanie’s Comedy Club.  With all this humor running through his veins, it made sense to write a book that was funny, yet educational.  That book is 50 Ways to Be a Mainer.  But it is more than just a book of his writing.  Captain Billy wanted it to also be a coloring book and was fortunate for a talented young artist in his other home of Florida who did the illustrations for each section.

Join Captain Billy as he shares some of his stories from the book including humor in Maine, his favorite war, and the length of Maine’s coastline.

Find out more about Capt. Billy C. (Bill Casale) on his website or follow him on Facebook @CaptainBillyC.
