Author talk-Bruce Pratt: Trash Detail and Forms and Shade
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Author Talk - "Trash Detail: Stories" by Bruce Pratt

Bruce will discuss writing in difference genres and well as read from his book. There will be time for questions following Bruce's presentation.

Bruce Pratt is an award-winning short story writer, poet, and playwright. He is the author of the novel The Serpents of Blissfull from Mountain State Press, the poetry collection Boreal from Antrim House Books, The Trash Detail: Stories from New Rivers Press, and the poetry chapbook Forms and Shades from Clare Songbirds Publishing. His fiction, poetry, drama, and essays have appeared in more than forty magazines, reviews, and journals across the United States, and in Canada, Ireland, and Wales. He is the editor of American Fiction.

Bruce teaches at the University of Maine and through workshops sponsored by the Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance.

Reviews

Bruce Pratt’s poems are smart and accomplished. He keeps a close watch on the natural world, and an even closer one on human nature. Boreal is a collection which extends pleasure to insight on every page.  -Gerald Costanzo

A memorable outpouring of passion and paradox, Pratt’s pitch-perfect poems entwine uncertainties into a retrospective which rather than striking back at experience, holds it gracefully, gratefully, close at hand. Again and again I’m drawn back into these poems of faith, deeply rooted in a man standing firm, chest-deep in the current of each passing, uncertain moment, any desire to be rescued not out of fear but because someone looked for you and not finding you where you should be / dove into the waves for love.     -Dzvinia Orlowsky

You can find out more about Bruce on his website.

Books will be available for sale.

SEXUAL VIOLENCE AND AMERICAN INDIAN GENOCIDE
Native American studies scholar and activist Andrea Smith reveals the connections between different forms of violence—perpetrated by the state and by society at large—and documents their impact on Native women. Smith connects examples of historical and contemporary colonialism to the high rates of violence against Native American women—the most likely to suffer from poverty-related illness and to survive rape and partner abuse.

6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

"The Food that Feeds Us All: Migrant and Seasonal Farmworkers in Maine"  with Jan Morrill and  Rosi

Presented in partnership with the Maine Multicultural Center

For 25 years, the Maine Mobile Health Program (MMHP) has addressed the health needs of migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their families. Each year the program connects with over 1500 farmworkers in more than 60 labor camps, worksites and community locations in Maine. MMHP has worked to address social determinants of health including access to education, employment, food security, and housing. The program uses community health workers to promote patient engagement and advocacy. In 2017, the National Association of Community Health Centers recognized MMHP as the Outstanding Migrant Health Center of the year.

Jan Morrill is the Director of Advocacy for the organization. She oversees its legislative outreach and community engagement programs. She also works as a Community Health Worker with migrant farmworkers in Midcoast Maine.

Rosi Ontiveros lives in the Lewiston area, is a former farmworker and has extensive experience in health education for dairy and egg factory
workers.

Maine Multicultural Community Forums are free, public educational events sponsored by the Maine Multicultural Center. They will enlighten, challenge and provoke participants in support of the Multicultural Center's mission to "welcome and champion diversity as essential to the economic and social vitality of Maine." The views and opinions presented during the Forums are those of the presenters and do not necessarily reflect the positions of the Maine Multicultural Center.

Exhibit opening-Bangor Arts Society Juried Show
5:00 PM - 8:00 PM

The Bangor Art Society was founded in February 1875 by Jeremiah Pearson Hardy and his daughter Annie. Over the years the name changed from Bangor Art Association to the Bangor Society of Arts, to the Bangor Art Society. What has never changed has been the purpose of the society. Then as now, we are dedicated to promoting visual art and encouraging the creative spirit through a variety of programs and events. We welcome new members and new ideas and take delight in the passion that fuels the creative spirit.

The 2019 Bangor Art Society’s Open Juried Art Show is delighted to welcome this year’s juror, Susan Roux of the Roux and Cyr International Fine Art Gallery in Portland, Maine. This show is open to the public and any artist is welcome to submit two works to be juried into the show. We offer $3000 in prizes across five categories, the largest in prizes awarded in any Maine art show open to the public!

For more information please visit the Bangor Art Society website.

Author Talk- Daughters of Long Reach by Irene Drago
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Maine author, Irene Drago, will talk about how Maine's maritime history inspired her debut novel--a seafaring, shipbuilding, family love story.

Drawn to its rich maritime history, Ellie and Ty Malone purchase a grand home in Bath, Maine, and discover the story of a prominent shipbuilding family who lived there in the 1800s. "Daughters of Long Reach"? explores love and loss through the lens of two families who are separated by time but connected by the rolling tides of the Kennebec River.

Anna Malone, a modern-day daughter, arrives in Bath to heal and to begin to write again after losing her heart and her work to a charming, but a duplicitous filmmaker. Stella Rose leaves Bath in the 1940s to nurse wounded sailors, but finds love in the middle of the war and may never go home again. Captain Thomas Goss comes back to Bath to save his soul but almost loses it completely.

Across three centuries, Long Reach’s dramatic history ties three lives together with a sailor’s knot.

"Daughters of Long Reach" won the 2018 Next Generation Indie Book Award in the first category.

Much like Ellie of "Daughters of Long Reach", Irene M. Drago fell in love with Bath's maritime history in 2013 and has quickly cultivated deep ties to the Kennebec River. Irene lives there with her husband and has kept her writing flowing by maintaining Bath Time Society, a blog that speaks to Mainers both native and new.

Born in the shadow of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Irene’s father and brother both served on destroyers, which inspired a fascination with ships and boats of all kinds. Life has taken her from Brooklyn to Long Island, Worcester, Washington, D.C., Wichita, Chicago, and now to Bath, Maine, her city of choice.

Visit Irene's website for more information. You can also follow her on Facebook @irenemdrago. Irene won the Bath Spirit Sward for her blog Bath Time Society--click here to visit the blog.

Books will be available for purchase.

Mystery Writers Panel with RIchard Cass, Brenda Buchanan, Vaughn Hardacker
5:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Do you have what it takes to solve a good mystery?

If so, you don’t want to miss working with mystery writers Vaugh Hardacker, Brenda Buchanan, and Richard Cass to help solve a mystery on the fly. This esteemed panel of authors will draw facts for a mystery to be solved, then, with intense help from the audience, they’ll open up about how they make decisions when they create their books.

Richard Cass is the author of the Elder Darrow jazz mystery series: Solo Act and was a finalist for the 2017 Maine Literary Awards in Crime Fiction. Its prequel, In Solo Time, won the 2018 Maine Literary Award in Crime Fiction. The third book in the series, Burton’s Solo, was released November 1, 2018. Cass serves on the board of Mystery Writers of America’s New England Chapter and volunteers with the Maine Crime Writers. Cass lives in Cape Elizabeth, Maine with his wife Anne and a Maine Coon Cat named Tinker.

Visit Richard's website for more information. You can reach him on Twitter @DickCass and on Facebook at Richard Cass-Writer

Vaughn C. Hardacker is a member of the New England Chapter of the Mystery Writers of America and International Thriller Writers. Three of his
novels, SNIPER, THE FISHERMAN, and WENDIGO were finalists in the Crime Fiction category of the 2015, 2016, and 2018 Maine Literary
Awards. His fifth novel, MY BROTHER'S KEEPER, is scheduled for a July 2019 release.

Vaughn is a veteran of the U. S. Marines and served in Vietnam. He holds degrees from Northern Maine Technical College, the University of Maine
and Southern New Hampshire University. He lives in Stockholm, Maine where he is working on his next crime thriller.

Visit Vaughn's website for more information.  You can also follow him on Facebook @vaughnchardacker and Twitter @VCHardacker.

Brenda Buchanan grew up in Western Massachusetts and studied journalism at Northeastern University. She worked as a reporter trainee at the Boston Globe and studied creative writing with Robert Parker, creator of the Spenser series, among others. After Northeastern, she moved to Maine to work as a journalist at the York County Coast Star in Kennebunk, then went to law school in the late eighties. About ten years ago, she moved from Peaks Island to America and got serious about her fiction writing. She is the author of three Joe Gale mysteries: Quick Pivot, Cover Story, and Truth Beat.
