Legal Services Day
3:00 PM - 7:00 PM

The Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP) and the Bangor Public Library are partnering to host our third Legal Services Day event. Legal Services Day will take place at the Bangor Public Library on Tuesday, October 9th from 3-7pm. Members of the public with low incomes will be able to meet with VLP volunteers and complete confidential initial interviews to start a case with VLP. Following the event VLP staff will review case information, follow up with attendees about their case, and in many cases find a local attorney to take the case.

According to VLP Bangor staff member Greg Pierce “the legal community in Bangor has been especially generous with their time over the years. There is a tradition of involvement for local attorneys, and here at VLP we are very pleased to be working with our partners at Bangor Public Library to help raise awareness of our programs throughout the community.”

In 1983, Pine Tree Legal Assistance (PTLA) partnered with the Maine Justice Foundation to create a project dedicated to engaging volunteers in providing civil legal aid. Housed within PTLA for 35 years, the Volunteer Lawyers Project became a separate non-profit organization with its own board in 2017. The VLP has a small staff that recruits, trains, manages, and supports volunteers. In most VLP cases, the legal assistance is provided by pro bono attorney volunteers. Student and community volunteers conduct intake interviews, provide legal information, organize events, and help develop new service projects.

Typically, VLP clients must have a household income below 200% of federal poverty guidelines, however, determining income eligibility is quite complex - please don't assume you are not eligible without talking to VLP. Members of the public who wish to check their incomes prior to the event may go to http://www.safetyweb.org/fpl.php .

Members of the public should bring documents relevant to their case, including court notices, letters, and other documents necessary to understand their individual case.

Throughout the year, all across Maine, the Volunteer Lawyers Project provides help with a variety of civil legal problems that are handled in Maine courts. Family law clinics are operating weekly at various Maine courthouses. Check out http://vlp.org/access-justice-today for clinic scheduling information and to find out about our ongoing case intake hotline services.

Author talk-Jane Goodrich-House At Lobster Cove
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

The House At Lobster Cove by Jane Goodrich

This book talk will take place just a few days after the 164th anniversary of Father John Bapst being driven out of Ellsworth on a rail, October 14, 2018. A vivid portrayal of this event takes place early in the novel and underscores George Nixon Black's interactions with the world around him for the rest of his life.  Part of the research for this book was conducted at the Bangor Public Library the architect of which, Peabody and Stearns, also designed Kragsyde, the house at Lobster Cove. The author, Jane Goodrich, and her husband recreated this magnificent house on Swan's Island.

Jane will present a slide show of historic images related to the book, concentrating on people and events related to the Ellsworth and Bangor areas.  Books will be available for purchase.

"He was Boston's largest taxpayer with little interest in civic affairs. He was listed yearly in the Blue Book and joined no clubs. He possessed a dining room overlooking Boston Common and never entertained.

If George Nixon Black was mentioned at all, it was almost as rumor. He came and went from the opera in a carriage pulled by horses that were the envy of his peers. If he were glimpsed on the street, it was almost always with one of his beloved dogs by his side. His magnificent seaside greenhouses boasted rare plants, his collection of antiques and paintings, seldom exhibited, were said to be extraordinary. When his own portrait was painted, just twice, he chose women artists. Each winter he quietly boarded a luxury European-bound steamship with a man eighteen years his junior. The two had lived together for years.

Black's life was exceptional for his time. After a youth marred by violence and uncertainty, and a life of great privilege contrasted with the awareness of the danger his lifestyle placed him in, his happiness is remarkable and his secrecy understandable.

In the end, it was his house that gave him away. While Black himself was probably content to slip unnoticed into history, Kragsyde, his house at Lobster Cove, was to have no such fate. Published many times when it was first designed, and adored by architects and scholars ever since, the marvelous and photogenic house has made it impossible for Black to disappear.

In The House at Lobster Cove, you will meet the elusive Boston bachelor who was a curious blend of humility and fierceness, and see behind the doors of Kragsyde, the house that sheltered and shaped him, and continued to tell his story long after both were gone."

Please visit the book's website for more information and reviews.

Author talk: Lew-Ellyn Hughes-Maine Stories
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Lew-Ellyn Hughes is an award-winning columnist and author. "Away with Words", Lew-Ellyn's bi-monthly newspaper column, is a seven-time winner in the Maine Press Association's Better Newspaper Contest.

As a storyteller, Hughes writes about love, parenting, grand-parenting, aging, and family (not only being why you are, but why you are the way you are).

Lew-Ellyn's love of words and love of history along with her ability to pick out a single fleck of gold from the vast river of moments that flow through a day, she creates humorous, often poignant or insightful stories about Maine and its people.

Hughes' Maine ancestry dates to the pre-Revolutionay War era, but because her father's military career took her family to everywhere but the state they loved the most, she spent only summers in Maine, on Moosehead Lake. Because of this, many of Hughes' tales give a unique view of a Mainer living in exile--like how to deal with finding a South Carolina cockroach in your LL Bean boot (while your foot is still in it!)

Her stories have appeared in several newspapers across Maine, including Down East Magazine.

Find out more about Lew-Ellyn on her website or follow her on Facebook as Away with Words @LEHughes2016.

What the publishing world is saying:

"This is wholesome, comfortable entertainment, beautifully written, with Hughes’ signature self-deprecating wry humor and tenderness — a refreshing departure from much of today’s mean-spirited media scribbling." Bill Bushnell, Bushnell on Books, Kennebec Journal & Morning Sentinel

"This writer has captured Maine." George Smith, Bangor Daily News

"Hughes gives words to a Maine experience." --Ed turner, "On Maine Writers", Book Nook, Lewiston Sun Journal

"Nice voice, funny, with a down-home appeal." --Peter Chianca, Managing Editor, Community Newspaper Co.

"L.E. Hughes does indeed have a way with words, offering tales of everyday life here in Maine that touch us all in significant ways. Her column, "Away with Words," is a highlight many of our readers look forward to, including myself who gets a "first look" at these wonderful columns."--Robert Gray Jr. Editor, The Original Irregular

MMCC presents These are our Neighbors
6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

These are Our Neighbors

Come listen, learn and converse with two Bangor residents whose remarkable backgrounds and contributions to our community are as impressive as they are divergent. Syrian international rap artist Zac Allaf  and Nigerian immigration lawyer/African import store owner/fashion designer, Angela Okafor, from Nigeria, will share their experience in what should be a stimulating evening.

Maine Multicultural Community Forums are free, public educational events sponsored by the Maine Multicultural Center. They will enlighten, challenge and provoke participants in support of the Multicultural Center's mission to "welcome and champion diversity as essential to the economic and social vitality of Maine." The views and opinions presented during the Forums are those of the presenters, and do not necessarily re?ect the positions of the Maine Multicultural Center.

Presented in partnership with the Maine Multicultural Center
