The Usual Suspects - A Book Club for Mystery Readers
5:30 PM - 6:30 PM

Mystery lovers continue to discuss this genre through the winter!  The group meets the FIRST Wednesday of every month at 5:30 pm in the Library's Edward O. Darling Room (unless otherwise noted).

Jan. 2:  In the Woods by Tana French

~After a 12-year-old Irish lad and his two pals fail to return from a day in the woods, searchers find only the terrified sixth grader--with blood-filled shoes and no memory of what happened. Now 32, the tragedy's sole survivor Rob Ryan is a detective on Dublin's Murder Squad. A current investigation takes Rob to the exact site of his childhood trauma. With the present case chillingly similar to his 20-year-old nightmare, Rob hopes to unlock the shrouded secrets of his past.

This group is open to the public and registration is not required; feel free to drop in at anytime!  For more information, go to https://www.bpl.lib.me.us/book-groups/ or contact the Library's Business Manager, Tina Hustus, thustus@bangorpubliclibrary.org

6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

"The Food that Feeds Us All: Migrant and Seasonal Farmworkers in Maine"  with Jan Morrill and  Rosi

Presented in partnership with the Maine Multicultural Center

For 25 years, the Maine Mobile Health Program (MMHP) has addressed the health needs of migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their families. Each year the program connects with over 1500 farmworkers in more than 60 labor camps, worksites and community locations in Maine. MMHP has worked to address social determinants of health including access to education, employment, food security, and housing. The program uses community health workers to promote patient engagement and advocacy. In 2017, the National Association of Community Health Centers recognized MMHP as the Outstanding Migrant Health Center of the year.

Jan Morrill is the Director of Advocacy for the organization. She oversees its legislative outreach and community engagement programs. She also works as a Community Health Worker with migrant farmworkers in Midcoast Maine.
Rosi Ontiveros lives in the Lewiston area, is a former farmworker and has extensive experience

Maine Multicultural Community Forums are free, public educational events sponsored by the Maine Multicultural Center. They will enlighten, challenge and provoke participants in support of the Multicultural Center's mission to "welcome and champion diversity as essential to the economic and social vitality of Maine." The views and opinions presented during the Forums are those of the presenters and do not necessarily reflect the positions of the Maine Multicultural Center.

Exhibit opening reception-Amber Walker
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

"Gray Paper" -Art Journaling

About the exhibit

"Pages completed, held together with the laces of my military boots. Slipping the pile into the box assembled for the purpose of containment. Fear is bubbling up in me, these pages are personal, vulnerability had oozed into the paint and ink. There is pride for my military career and honor in wearing my military uniform. I cut up my old uniforms to narrate part of my story, interweaving the camouflage with present existence. It is a weaving of the grit and the delicate. I tell myself it is okay to make these stories servo connect us.  These pages are raw, breaking open the shell to capture the authenticity of those years. I hope the telling of my story has drawn lines that connect you and me, hoping you can see where our lines meet." - Amber Walker

About the artist

mber has been art journaling for the past thirteen years. Her art journaling has coincided with her career as a social worker, this love of art becoming a therapeutic creative outlet and passion. The words, paint, and ink spill across the pages and canvas with no conscious plan or desired outcome, nothing off limits.  The work is intuitive and often incorporates themes of women and the pursuit of freedom.

Amber Walker was born and raised in the State of Maine.
