BDN - Dirigo Speaks
5:00 PM - 7:00 PM

~~Title: Dirigo Speaks Presents: A Reading of "The Dogs Pond" the newest play by Orono playwright Travis G. Baker

It should be noted that The Dogs Pond is not family friendly.  It's about six men up at camp, four of whom are vets.  It's about life after war. life in Maine, feeling empty, dead, proud, patriotic, full of hope and full of crap...sometimes all at the same time.

“The play centers on a small band of veterans of our most recent wars, Owen, Stills and Bergsey, who have gathered for a reunion organized by Owen’s brother Carter at their uncle’s fishing camp cabin on the Dogs Pond in Maine.  I fell in love with the characters of this play.  They are vivid, complicated, quirky, messed-up, fully human characters that don’t explain or apologize for the way they are.  They needle, they tease and they annoy each other like any family or group of friends that have known each other for too long and love each other no matter what.  They drink, they smoke pot, they reminisce, they share their crazy stories, they remember friends lost, they argue, they fight, and they try to make sense of the world and their lives in it.  The uncertainty and dangers they face now seem no less than what they faced in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The writing in The Dogs Pond is beautiful: poetic and spare at times, with funny, lively, colorful exchanges and stories at other points.  There is a lot of very funny dialogue but it never feels forced for its own sake and comes out from the characters’ own experiences and viewpoints.  The language feels wonderfully theatrical and full of brutal honesty at the same time.  Bergsey, a multiple amputee who rode a specially outfitted motorcycle up from Texas, uses obscenities that flow like a comic poetry and still feel perfect and truthful for the character.  This play easily shifts from the obscene and the comedic to poetic prologues that linger like desperate prayers.”

~~Maine's Weather: What you need to know.

Overview
Gregory A. Zielinski, Maine's former State Climatologist, will tell us about "Maine's Weather: What you need to know." Greg will explain what controls the weather of Maine from the coast to the mountains and how you can be your own forecaster especially when outdoors. He will talk about some of those past snowstorms that we all remember and like to boast about. Greg is a former research professor, an author of two books on our region's weather. He has been featured in NOVA, among other scientific programs.
