Four Critical Components to a Successful Retirement
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Join us for this educational event and learn about the four critical components of a successful retirement:

  • Inflation: Can erode the "purchasing value" of your money for everyday needs if you are not keeping pace.
  • Social Security:  When do I elect and how can I maximize?  What is the solvency of social security, and will benefits exist or be reduced?
  • Taxes now and in retirement:  Taxes in retirement accounts can eat away at the value when needed most.  Will taxes rise in the future and will that change the success of retirement?
  • Market Volatility and Income Needs:  Loss in the market and creating lifelong income can have a big impact.

Presented by David Weyner, Sr. Advisor at U.S.A. Financial & Tax Services LLC.  Following 20 years as a senior corporate executive, since 2012 Mr. Weyner has worked with the Connecticut community with various financial and insurance planning needs. As Senior Associate, Mr. Weyner has also spoken at many seminars and workshops with the objective of helping community members better understand their planning options and strategies to enhance their retirement planning. Originally from New York, David attended Stonybrook University and has two grown children living in Philadelphia and New Orleans.

This program is for informational purposes only and no sales pitch will take place.

Registration is required for all Library events.

Morning Book Chat
10:15 AM - 11:30 AM

This month's selection is Fifty Words for Rain by Asha Lemmie. “Do not question. Do not fight. Do not resist.”  Such is eight-year-old Noriko “Nori” Kamiza’s first lesson. The child of a married Japanese aristocrat and her African American GI lover, Nori is an outsider from birth.  Obedient to a fault, Nori accepts her solitary life, despite her natural intellect and curiosity. But when chance brings her older half-brother, Akira, to the estate that is his inheritance and destiny, Nori finds in him an unlikely ally with whom she forms a powerful bond—a bond their formidable grandparents cannot allow and that will irrevocably change the lives they were always meant to lead.

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Join us for the first in our Community Economic Development Fund (CEDF) series for small business owners.

The speakers in the webinar are Caroline Wetzel and Andy Leung.

Caroline is a Vice President and Private Wealth Advisor at Procyon Partners.  Andy is a personal financial advisor.  His experience as an independent business owner and operator gives him a strong understanding of the financial needs and challenges of franchising and small business ownership.

The Discovery of a Masterpiece
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

A hidden Rodin masterpiece lost.. and then rediscoved! Join us to hear about one of the biggest art finds in recent history.

Working as the Curator of Collections for the Hartley Dodge Foundation in Madison, NJ, and cataloging the artworkMallory Mortillaro uncovered a masterpiece that had been lost to the art world since the 1930’s.  After a year of research the piece was authenticated as an official work by Auguste Rodin. Mallory will share the story of how a simple art cataloging project evolved into a search for a mysterious piece’s provenance.

Mallory Mortillaro holds a BA and MAT, both from Drew University.  She balances her work as an Art Historian with teaching 7th grade English.  Her discovery has been covered by The New York Times, Smithsonian Magazine, Architectural Digest, and more.

Paranormal Case Studies
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Join us for this event just in time for Halloween!  The Eastern Connecticut Paranormal Society (ECPS) will discuss several of their real-live case studies and will give the audience a chance to learn not only the intricacies of investigating, but to also understand the possible complications that may arise when investigating paranormal claims.

ECPS was formed in 2016 due to the increasing need for a scientific and professional approach to the paranormal.  Together, they set out to change the paranormal field one case at a time, and to set an example for how paranormal investigations should be performed.

This event is for teens and adults age 14 and up.

CEDF Series: Planning a Successful Business Exit
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Join us for the fourth event in our Community Economic Development Fund (CEDF) series for small business owners.

Only a small percentage of businesses outlive their owners. Some owners sell out. Some transfer interests to family or partners. Some just close the operation. Regardless of your circumstances and long-term intentions, the time to start thinking about the financial aspects of exit plans is now, not when unforeseen events or adverse circumstances overtake you and narrow your choices.

Judi Otton is the founder of  GrowthCast, a company dedicated to helping small business owners manage their cash flow, maximize their profits, and ensure that the financial aspects of their business are all in order. With a background in engineering, as well as an MBA, Judi has come to love the numbers and process side of business.

CEDF Series: Super Charged Networking Success: It's More Than Just a Meeting
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Join us for the final event in our Community Economic Development Fund (CEDF) series for small business owners.

Networking is an ongoing process of developing trusting relationships. This webinar will help you learn: Why you may have totally misunderstood what networking is all about. Why you are missing the boat if you are just thinking business development. Why you have to get your mind right to be a successful networker. Why you will fail if you haven’t done this before the networking event. Why you must be able to deliver your “commercial” in under 30 seconds. The essential list of what you must always do and what you must never do. How you will blow your opportunity if you fail to do this afterward.

Chip Janiszewski is an accomplished speaker who has taught thousands how to “Live with Purpose, Passion, Positivity and a Plan.”  He is a master at networking who can help you learn how to turn what many small business owners fear and shrink from into one of the most important tools for the success of your enterprise.

This is a Zoom event.

Author Talk With Greg Dillon
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Former Branford police officer and FBI agent Greg Dillon shares his whistleblower story in The Thin Blue Lie: An Honest Cop vs the FBI, to show just what happens when one tries to report FBI misconduct.  When Greg Dillon is assigned to a federal fugitive task force in Connecticut, he inadvertently uncovers a pattern of misconduct and falsified affidavits.  After reporting his concerns to the politically connected but incompetent chief state's attorney, the whistleblower finds himself a target of reprisal.  Investigated, transferred, demoted, and threatened, Dillon hires an attorney, and--with the assistance of legendary whistleblower Frank Serpico--takes on both the state of Connecticut and the Department of Justice in federal court, resulting in an explosive verdict and a landmark federal court decision. But then the retaliation continued...

Greg Dillon has had a 30 year career in law enforcement.  He has served as a special deputy sheriff, a police officer, an FBI Special Agent, and finally as a supervisory inspector in the Chief State's Attorney's Office, Division of Criminal Justice, CT.

Morning Book Chat
10:15 AM - 11:30 AM

This month's selection is Yes, Chef by Marcus Samuelson.  It begins with a simple ritual: Every Saturday afternoon, a boy who loves to cook walks to his grandmother’s house and helps her prepare a roast chicken for dinner. The grandmother is Swedish, a retired domestic. The boy is Ethiopian and adopted, and he will grow up to become the world-renowned chef Marcus Samuelsson. This book is his love letter to food and family in all its manifestations.

HOW TO GET A COPY:  Please click here to make an online request with your Library card; or call us at 203-794-8756 to check availability of pre-ordered copies at the Circulation Desk.

We are also offering a book guide for all registrants which highlights the authors background, offers book interviews and insights, as well as topics and questions to stimulate the conversation.
