Medicare Basics
10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Whether you are just turning 65 or new to Medicare, now is a good time to learn about Medicare and how to choose a plan that may meet your needs. Join Nicholas Toscano from United Health Care for this important discussion. This program is for informational purposes only. No products or services will be promoted.

We’ll cover common questions such as:
  • What’s the difference between Medicare Parts A, B, C and D?
  • When can you enroll in a plan?
  • How does your current plan compare with a Medicare plan?
  • Can you save money with a Medicare plan?
  • Could you be eligible for vision, dental, hearing and other benefits?

Consider Medicare if:

  • You’re turning 65 soon, or you celebrated your 65th birthday within the last 3 months
  • You’ve recently moved to Connecticut
  • You’re already covered by Medicaid but are Medicare eligible
  • You’re over 65, still working and want an alternative to your employer’s plan
  • You’re over 65 and planning to retire soon

Registration is required for this in person event.

Author Talk with Neil DeFillippo
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

A true story about an immigrant woman who arrived from Italy in 1904 at the age of sixteen who created a financial empire.

Cristina Covino was able to accumulate her wealth by grit, hard work, and, yes, by dealings with the underworld, starting during Prohibition in 1927 and taking illegal numbers in 1931, all the while running her own grocery store.

The story follows a cast of characters who had direct connections to the Covino Family and tells of a close-knit family, friends, and oh-so-loyal customers who admired and loved her.

Join Neil DeFillippo, a Bethel resident, writer, and grandson of this fascinating and brave woman, making it in a "man's world".

Books will be available for sale and signing.

Off the Rails with Jim Cameron
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

How will new residential / workplace trends affect CT’s economy?

Author Talk with Lenny Levine
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Local storytelling musician Lenny Levine is also a published author. His stories have appeared in literary magazines and journals, he was awarded a Pushcart Prize nomination for short fiction, and he has a new full-length novel that he will talk about at the Bethel Public Library!

Here's what Lenny has told us so far:

"Eddie Fein is a twelve-year-old boy living in Brooklyn. It’s the last week of the 1951 baseball season, and his beloved Dodgers are enduring the epic collapse to the hated Giants that will be punctuated by Bobby Thomson’s "shot heard ’round the world." Eddie’s love for the Dodgers springs from his love for his father Barry Fein, a passionate Dodger fan, but an alcoholic who’s prone to bouts of depression and anger. When two Giants fans are murdered, Nick DiFazio, lead detective on the case and Barry’s best friend..."

There's a lot more to this mystery, so please join us to hear all about it from the author!

Registration is required for this in-person event. Masks are required.

Morning Book Chat
10:15 AM - 11:30 AM

The Jane Austen Society

This month's selection is The Jane Austen Society by Natalie Jenner.  Just after World War II, in the small English village of Chawton, an unusual but like-minded group of people band together to attempt something remarkable; to preserve both Jane Austen's legacy and her home.  One hundred and fifty years ago, Chawton was the final home of Jane Austen and the place where she wrote her six novels.  As each person in the group endures their own quiet struggle with loss and trauma, some from the recent war and others from more distant tragedies, they rally together to create the Jane Austen Society.

We are also offering a book guide for all registrants which highlights the author's background, offers interviews and book insights, as well as topics and questions to stimulate the conversation.

We have pre-ordered copies of the book for you.  Just call the Library at 203-794-8756 to reserve your copy and schedule a curbside pickup, or stop by the Library to pick up your copy.

Registration is required.  Please note that this will be an in-person event; social distancing guidelines will be observed, and masks will be required.

History of Christmas Carols: Secrets Your Parents Never Told You
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Secrets your parents never told you about the history of Christmas carols & songs

Discover some of the fascinating legends and realities that surround the traditional songs of the Christmas season. Carols used to be sung all during the year, but only the tradition of singing Christmas Carols has survived. The songs began when early Christians took over the pagan solstice galas for Christmas. They substituted Christian words with familiar melodies. Over the centuries the words and meanings of the songs have changed. Victorian industrialization made thinking about home during the holidays a ritual. Some melodies and verses were never intended to be Christmas songs but they worked. There is much more to these stories, join us for a 50-minute talk about the secrets you never knew about the history of Christmas carols & songs.

About the Speaker: John has been telling the stories of history for over a decade. He is a skilled historian having published seven historical books ranging from women working in WWII and their impact on today's business world to vintage helicopters. Nickolai Sikorsky wrote the foreword to his Helicopter Evolution book and Prince William was kind enough to write a letter about his copy of the book. He is an honorary member of the Danbury, Connecticut WWII Lost Squadron Veterans organization. John hails from a career in IBM corporate marketing and has spoken to large and small audiences in over 60 countries around the world. He lives in Sherman, Connecticut.
