Mark Greene, author of Lobster Wars, describes his book as a satire that reads like a thriller. His book is a tight, fast-paced social satire about what happens when reality tv comes to a small fishing village in Maine. The locals think they're going to get famous and rich. But it's never that easy. Join us to hear Mark read from, and talk about the process behind the book.
Mark Greene is an award-winning author with an offbeat sense of humor and a sharp eye for the absurd. A speeding lobster boat plowing through a flotilla of helpless sea kayakers sparked his interest in the rough-and-tumble work of Maine lobstermen and became the driving concept of Lobster Wars. When Mark is not writing, he and his family are pursuing all manner of self-propelled outdoor sports, providing content for his podcast: Mark in the Wild. Mark, a former resident of Bethel, lives in Newtown.

Maria Brandriff is the former Assistant Director of the Cheshire Public Library, where she was in charge of public programming. Ms. Brandriff’s interest in fine cooking and baking came from growing up in a Ukrainian household where Viennese-inspired tortes and confections dominated every holiday. Since then, Ms. Brandriff has experimented with the traditional recipes and has come up with her own variations. She has also become more and more involved with the intricacies of working with chocolate. At holiday time she produces hundreds of chocolate truffle candies, which she shares with family and friends. Ms. Brandriff completed the Certificate of Gastronomy program at the University of New Haven in 2003. In early 2004 she had the opportunity to travel to the city of Arles in France for an intensive 3 day apprenticeship with a noted Provencal chocolatier. Our first book Start With Why by Simon Sinek ponders why some people and organizations are more innovative, more influential and more profitable than others. His reasoning is that people won't buy into a product, service, movement, or idea until they understand the WHY behind it. His book shows that the leaders who've had the greatest influence in the world all think, act, and communicate the same way - and it's the opposite of what everyone else does. Sinek calls his idea "The Golden Circle." Do you believe it?

This month's selection is Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Guy Montag is a fireman. His job is to destory the most illegal of all commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland existence and his wife, who spends all day with her television "family." When he meets his young neighbor who introduces him to a past where people didn't live in fear and to a present where one sees the world through the ideas in books instead of the mindless chatter of tv, Montag begins to question everything he has ever known.
