CEDF Webinar Series: Can Your Business Make it to Angel Investor Heaven?
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Join us for the ninth event in our Community Economic Development Fund (CEDF) webinar series for small business owners.

You’ve probably heard only ½ of one percent of startups are funded by venture capital. Fortunately, angel investors fund more deals for new and young companies, but the majority of small businesses still find they are aiming at a needle’s eye.

How do you find the “right” investors for your business? What are angel investors looking for when they look at your company? What are their “hot buttons”? Can your operation deliver the return on investment they are looking for? Does an angel investor have a “hidden agenda”? How do you put a deal together with an angel investor in such a way that it doesn’t prevent you from raising more capital in the future?

Learning how these deals are done can be instructive for any business seeking equity, even (especially) if your equity investor is Uncle Charlie.

Presenter Cliff Ennico is an attorney and business development consultant based in Fairfield, Connecticut.  He is the author of 17 books and host of his own small business advice channel on YouTube. Cliff speaks nationwide to corporations, business groups and professional organizations on legal and tax issues affecting small businesses and entrepreneurs.

Author Talk With Mark Greene
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Mark Greene, author of Lobster Wars, describes his book as a satire that reads like a thriller.  His book is a tight, fast-paced social satire about what happens when reality tv comes to a small fishing village in Maine.  The locals think they're going to get famous and rich.  But it's never that easy.  Join us to hear Mark read from, and talk about the process behind the book.

Mark Greene is an award-winning author with an offbeat sense of humor and a sharp eye for the absurd.  A speeding lobster boat plowing through a flotilla of helpless sea kayakers sparked his interest in the rough-and-tumble work of Maine lobstermen and became the driving concept of Lobster Wars.  When Mark is not writing, he and his family are pursuing all manner of self-propelled outdoor sports, providing content for his podcast: Mark in the Wild.  Mark, a former resident of Bethel, lives in Newtown.

Basics of Chocolate Truffle Making
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

If you simply love chocolate and cooking or would like to learn to make some elegant desserts and chocolates, join us for this exciting event!

This lecture and cooking demonstration will include some basic information about chocolate, the various types of chocolate, and how to work with it. Samples and recipes will include several different types of truffle candies, perfect for giving your loved one on Valentine’s Day.

Maria Brandriff is the former Assistant Director of the Cheshire Public Library, where she was in charge of public programming.  Ms. Brandriff’s interest in fine cooking and baking came from growing up in a Ukrainian household where Viennese-inspired tortes and confections dominated every holiday.  Since then, Ms. Brandriff has experimented with the traditional recipes and has come up with her own variations.  She has also become more and more involved with the intricacies of working with chocolate. At holiday time she produces hundreds of chocolate truffle candies, which she shares with family and friends.  Ms. Brandriff completed the Certificate of Gastronomy program at the University of New Haven in 2003.  In early 2004 she had the opportunity to travel to the city of Arles in France for an intensive 3 day apprenticeship with a noted Provencal chocolatier. Ms Brandriff has also been the featured chef at the Chef’s Table series at Zinc Restaurant in New Haven.

Registration is limited to 20 attendees.

CEDF Webinar Series: So You Want to Start a Specialty Food Business
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Join us for the eleventh event in our Community Economic Development Fund (CEDF) webinar series for small business owners.

Internet definitions declare specialty foods to be "unique and high-value food items made in small quantities from high-quality ingredients." Entrepreneur Magazine says the business is “more about marketing than cooking, getting your product on the shelves and then off again into customers' shopping carts.”

But what sounds glamorous and profitable often requires a tooth and nail fight against competitors, the distribution chain and the fickle tastes of consumers. Learn from an industry veteran what kind of investment, differentiation and tenacity is required to earn success in this niche. It takes more than a good idea and an interest in fancy flavors.

Presenter Gary Breitbart is Executive Director of Food'NBev Connect, a virtual accelerator for emerging food and beverage brands based in the Northeast. His non-profit links brand CEOs and their teams with advisors and investors to help speed growth and improve their businesses.

Gary’s corporate career includes executive positions in the specialty retailing, financial services and communications industry. He is a graduate of The Wharton School, New York University and Harvard Business School.

This is a Zoom event.

Business Book Club
6:30 PM - 7:45 PM

The Business Book Discussion group is a new Book Club targeted to people who would like to expand their knowledge of the business world.  We will be meeting every other month and will discuss how the business books relate to the "real" business world.  Are their ideas feasible?  Are they logical and realistic?  Do you think they would be easily duplicated?  Join us for an exciting discussion of both classic and current business books.  Refreshments will be served.

Our first book Start With Why by Simon Sinek ponders why some people and organizations are more innovative, more influential and more profitable than others.  His reasoning is that people won't buy into a product, service, movement, or idea until they understand the WHY behind it.  His book shows that the leaders who've had the greatest influence in the world all think, act, and communicate the same way - and it's the opposite of what everyone else does.  Sinek calls his idea "The Golden Circle."  Do you believe it?

Making Your Home Work For You in Retirement
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Many people would like to stay in their homes as long as possible in retirement.  The challenges are physical and financial.  Accessibility and safety become major priorities.  As incomes may decrease in retirement, many may find themselves house-rich and cash-poor.  Many wonder if they need to move away to live well.  Learn how your home contributes to your net worth; how your home fits into a business success plan; whether you should put your home in a trust; how to unlock that value at the right time; whether a reverse mortgage is right for you; and more in the informative event.

The presenters are David B. Bussolotta, a member of the Trusts and Estates Practice at Pullman & Combie; David Swanson, the President and CEO of MSimortgage.com LLC who will cover ways to finance your home to "age-in-place" with dignity; and Colin Healy, who has been transforming homes for beauty, function, and longevity for over 25 years.  He is a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist by the National Association of Home Builders.

Live Eyes Up
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Ben Grannis was fed up with distracted drivers and people living on their phones, so he did something about it.  He set out on a 7,000 mile bicycle ride around the United States to raise awareness and $40,000 to end distracted driving and promote digital wellness.  Having recently completed his journey, Ben is now sharing his Eyes Up message with young people.  Through heartfelt and engaging stories, Ben inspires audiences to Look, Listen, and Live, while giving them practical steps they can implement immediately to live life more fully-and less distracted.

Ben grew up in Ridgefield and is an Eagle Scout and a 2017 graduate of Kenyon College.  For the past three years, he has worked for Overland Summers as a trip leader and a logistics coordinator.

Morning Book Chat
10:15 AM - 11:30 AM

This month's selection is The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune.  A magical island.  A dangerous task.  A burning secret.  Linus lives a quiet, solitary life overseeing the wellbeing of children in orphanages.  He is unexpectantly summoned by Extremely Upper Management and given a curious and highly classified assignement:  to travel to an orphanage to determine whether or not six dangerous children are likely to bring about the end of days.  This is an enchanting story about the profound experience of discovering an unlikely family in an unexpected place—and realizing that family is yours.

HOW TO GET A COPY:  Please click here to make an online request with your Library card; or call us at 203-794-8756 to check availability of pre-ordered copies at the Circulation Desk.

Thanks to our free enterprise system, it's still relatively easy to accumulate at least a small amount of capital and launch a venture.  And whether it's called a "side hustle,"  "part time gig," or small business, it's still subject to the market forces and foundational truths that ultimately separate those who succeed from those who don't.  Take advantage of the accumulated wisdom of the University of Bridgeport's Innovation and Entrepreneurship programs and learn the inescapable truths that every aspiring business owner must face.  Understanding these root concepts makes the start-up path easier to follow.

Presenter Sherri Dente, Esq., is a Director of the Innovation Center at Bauer Hall at the University of Bridgeport.  The Innovation Center leads the school's mission to provide resources and collaborations to help students and community members create businesses.  She previously served as UB's Director of Technology Transfer and Venture Creation overseeing the Technology Commercialization Group.  Before joining UB, she worked as the Intellectual Property Manager at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and as a patent attorney from Wiggin and Dana, LLP.

This is a Zoom event.

A Thriller Autor's Guide to Getting Published
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Have you written a book, but don't know how to get it published?  Do you find the whole process overwhelming?  Join thriller author Deborah Levison as she weaves her story about getting published around her books, The Crate and A Nest of Snakes.

Deborah Levison is an author and publicist.  Her life has two parts:  the first in Canada, where she attended the University of Toronto and the Royal Conservatory of Music, and the second part in Connecticut, where she lives with three children, two doodles, and one husband.  Her first book, an acclaimed nonfiction called The Crate, is a true crime story with echoes of the Holocaust.  The book won seven literary awards.  Levison's latest novel, A Nest of Snakes, is part thriller, part courtroom drama based on real-life abuse at elite New England private schools.

Monday Night Classics Book Group
6:30 PM - 7:45 PM

This month's selection is Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.  Guy Montag is a fireman.  His job is to destory the most illegal of all commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden.  Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland existence and his wife, who spends all day with her television "family."  When he meets his young neighbor who introduces him to a past where people didn't live in fear and to a present where one sees the world through the ideas in books instead of the mindless chatter of tv, Montag begins to question everything he has ever known.

Taxes, Upcoming Changes & the Potential Impact on Your Retirement
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

The implications of taxes on the American population are a widely discussed and debated topic.  Rising deficits at both the state and federal level are cause for concern for every taxpayer, especially those near retirement.  At this educational workshop, you will learn how effective planning and timing can alter the outcome of your retirement.  We will discuss current tax law, potential changes to tax law, effects of inflation and strategies to help you minimize your tax liability.  We will also share case studies that will illustrate how to successfully navigate this complex topic and get you as close to "tax-free in retirement" as is possible.

Following 20 years as a Senior Corporate Executive, since 2012 Dave Weyner has worked with the Connecticut community with various financial and insurance planning needs.  As Senior Associate, USA Financial and Tax Services, Mr. Weyner has also spoken at many seminars and workshops with the objective of helping community members better understand their planning options and strategies to enhance their retirement planning.  Originally from New York, David attended Stonybrook University and has two grown children living in Philadelphia and New Orleans.
