Invasive Plants in Connecticut: History and Action
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Join us at Bethel Library for a discussion of invasive plants in Connecticut.  These plants have come from far and wide and established themselves as residents in our fields and forests.  Unfortunately, they do not always make the best neighbors for our established flora.  In this talk, we will discuss the general role of invasive plants, highlighting some particular species of interest, and cover some strategies that you as a home owner or property steward can use for their management.

Presenter J. D. Hill is a Bethel resident and board member of the Bethel Land Trust.  A computational biologist by trade, he is an avid nature lover, gardener, and scientific communicator.  He has given previous talks and workshops here at Bethel Library, ranging from beer brewing and kombucha making to winter sowing native plants.

This is a hybrid event; you can choose to attend in person or on Zoom.

Did a Connecticut Woman Kill Jack the Ripper?
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Florence Maybrick was convicted of murdering her husband in England in the 1800's and sentenced to be hanged. Some historians believe that her husband was Jack the Ripper. Still others say the Florence was framed. In any case, this once infamous figure lived the last years of her life in obscruity in the Gaylordsville section of New Milford under an assumed name. Only a handful of people knew her real identity at the time. What's the truth behind all of this? Come and hear what we know, and what we don't know.  Thursday, August 31 marked exactly 135 years since the first of the Ripper's five grisly murders occurred.

Mike Allen, host of the podcast "Amazing Tales From Off and On Connecticut's Beaten Path" previously presented at Bethel Public Library on P. T. Barnum. His podcast is rated among the top 5 to 10% of all podcasts in the United States. Prior to that, Mike was the on-air radio News Director at i-95 FM (WRKI-FM) and its sister station 940 WINE AM, before becoming Press Secretary for the Mayor of Danbury. During a subsequent 25-year corporate career, he worked, lived, and traveled internationally, specializing in public speaking, communications, and marketing before retiring. He's lived in Connecticut for more than 50 years and currently resides in Danbury.

Cool Flowers: Annuals For Earlier Color
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

The Annual Gardening Series, sponsored by the Bethel Garden Club, continues tonight!

Learn how to grow flowers that bloom weeks or even months before other plants start to bloom! Cool season annuals
prefer colder growing conditions, and most can be started prior to the last frost, as soon as the ground can be worked.
Cool flowers are productive, easy to grow, and will reward you with early spring and summer blooms.

Presenter Julia Cencebaugh Kloth is a popular speaker who explores the themes of creativity and gardening in harmony
with nature. She works professionally in garden preservation for the Garden Conservancy, and previously with the
University of Connecticut as a plant specialist. Julia holds certification from the New York Botanic Gardens in landscape
design and the International Society of Arboriculture, and is a Master Gardener. She designs public and private gardens
with an emphasis on environmental stewardship as exemplified in her own gardens at Old Barlow’s Carriage House in
Ridgefield.

Join us for our New Nonfiction Book Club!

This month's selection is The Innovators:  How a Group of Hackers, Geniuses, and Geeks Created the Digital Revolution by Walter Isaacson.  This is a story that is riveting, propulsive, and at times a deeply moving account of the people who created the computer and the Internet.  The tale of their teamwork is important because we don't often focus on how central that skills is to innovation.  This discussion is led by Programming and Outreach Librarian Ellen Janpol, who will talk about her time working for one of the "grandfathers of the Internet", Paul Baran!

Trash Talk: Bethel's Recycling Capability
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Connecticut is experiencing a waste crisis.  More waste is generated than there is capability to manage.  What happens to all that waste?  Where does it go?  Managing waste and knowing what to recycle can be confusing.  A member of the Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority (HRRA) will provide an educational workshop on waste disposal, recycling, and managing resources.

This family friendly event will cover where local garbage and recycling goes, the State of Connecticut's universal recycling guide, what happens when the wrong thing is put into a recycling bin, how waste and recycling impacts the environment, how reducing waste and separating food scraps can save readers money, and why Bethel residents are participating in "Take the Challenge-Save As You Throw" at the Transfer Station.

HRAA is the regional governmental solid waste and recycling authority.  Click Here for more information.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide
9:45 AM - 1:30 PM

Bethel Library is pleased to announce that AARP Foundation Tax-Aide will be returning this year to prepare tax returns, in person, for anyone, free of charge.  However, we would like to emphasize that AARP Tax-Aide focuses on taxpayers who are over 50 and have low to moderate income.  The Bethel Library is very convenient for Bethel taxpayers and we encourage taxpayers from other towns to look for AARP Tax-Aide or VITA sites near them before making an appointment at the Bethel Library.  Click Here to find Tax-Aide and VITA services for taxpayers outside of the Bethel area, or call 800-906-9887 for VITA or 888-227-7669 for AARP Tax-Aide.  Please note that VITA does have limits on income whereas AARP Tax-Aide does not.

Please note that AARP Tax-Aide cannot prepare certain tax returns.  We don't want you to be disappointed when you show up for your appointment, so here are the returns that the Tax-Aide volunteers cannot prepare:

  • Connecticut resident for only part of the year
  • Income from trading virtual currency
  • Rental income, unless it is for less than 15 days
  • Complicated capital gains, such as options or futures
  • Self-employed taxpayers who have employees, expenses greater than $35,000, business use of the house, or other complicated factors

Appointments for a specific time slot are required and can be made by registering below, calling 203-794-8756, ext. 3, or by coming to the Reference Desk on the second floor.  After you make your appointment, stop at the Circulation Desk to pick up a tax packet that you will need to complete before the day of your appointment and bring with you to your appointment.  Please also bring the following information with you:

  • Last year's tax return
  • Social Security cards
  • Government issued identification
  • Your completed Intake/Interview Form (Form 13614-C)
  • All documentation for the income you received, for example W-2's, 1099's, Social Security statments, etc.
  • If you itemize your deductions, documents summarizing those deductions, such as property taxes paid, medical expenses, etc.

You will be required to stay in the building while your taxes are being prepared.

Monday Night Classics Book Group
6:30 PM - 7:45 PM

This month's selection is Candide by Voltaire.  Candide is the story of a gentle man who, though pummeled and slapped in every direction by fate, clings desperately to the belief that he lives in "the best of all possible worlds." On the surface a witty, bantering tale, this eighteenth-century classic is actually a savage, satiric thrust at the philosophical optimism that proclaims that all disaster and human suffering is part of a benevolent cosmic plan. Fast, funny, often outrageous, the French philosopher's immortal narrative takes Candide around the world to discover that -- contrary to the teachings of his distinguished tutor Dr. Pangloss -- all is not always for the best. Alive with wit, brilliance, and graceful storytelling, Candide has become Voltaire's most celebrated work.

College Admission and Financial Aid Planning: Free Workshop
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Join Lynn Verrilli, founder of Advanced College Funding Solutions, LLC, as she discusses college planning and financial aid  for parents of high school freshman, sophmores, juniors and middle school students.  Even if your family is not eligible for need-based aid, she will cover strategies on how to pay for college on the most efficient basis.  Her talk will discuss the full gamut on how to pay for college from 529's, scholarships, loans, saving strategies, etc.

After completing her studies in Business Management at Eastern Connecticut State University, Lynn began her career in business development, working with 3 major corporations.  She then became a Registered Investment Advisor.  While assisting numerous clients with their investment and retirement goals, she found that a major concern for many parents was determining the method they would use to pay for college and still effectively address other major planning issues, like retirement funding.  She founded Advance College Funding Solutions and her knowledge of college planning and funding has succeeded in relieving much stress for parents and students.

Morning Book Chat
10:15 AM - 11:30 AM

This month's selection is Hello, Beautiful by Ann Napolitano.  An emotionally layered and engrossing story of a family that asks: Can love make a broken person whole?  William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him.  He meets Julia, who is inseparable from her three younger sisters.  But then darkness from William’s past surfaces, jeopardizing not only Julia’s carefully orchestrated plans for their future, but the sisters’ unshakeable loyalty to one another. The result is a catastrophic family rift that changes their lives for generations.  Will the loyalty that once rooted them be strong enough to draw them back together when it matters most?

Morning Book Chat
10:15 AM - 11:30 AM

This month's selection is Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, this is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father's good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival.  In a plot that never pauses for breath, relayed in his own unsparing voice, he braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.  Demon Copperhead speaks for a new generation of lost boys, and all those born into beautiful, cursed places they can't imagine leaving behind.

This month's selection is The Beekeeper of Aleppo by Christine Lefteri.  This unforgettable novel puts human faces on the Syrian war with the immigrant story of a beekeeper, his wife, and the triumph of spirit when the world becomes unrecognizable.  Nuri is a beekeeper and Afra, his wife, is an artist.  They live a simple life, rich in family and friends, in the hills of the beautiful Syrian city of Aleppo—until the unthinkable happens and all they love is destroyed by war.  This is a novel that at once reminds us that the most peaceful and ordinary lives can be utterly upended in unimaginable ways and brings a journey in faraway lands close to home, never to be forgotten.
