Music to Commemorate Illinois' Bicentennial
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

The program includes songs about farmers; workers and labor struggles; and disasters and tragedies. And sausage. Maybe even a little Rock and Roll.

Finding the Novel Inside of You
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

We all have a novel inside of us. It’s that story burning to be told. Hazelgrove tells the secrets and method to get started on that idea and keep at it through the first draft and subsequent revisions. He also covers the “ins-and-outs” of getting published, sharing stories of paperback auctions, movie options and his first big contract.

Coco Chanel
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel (1883-1971) was not only the most influential designer of the 20th century, she was one of the most influential women of all time; Australian Financial Review named her one of the top 10 business tycoons of the century.   Ninety years after Coco Chanel advocated that women should be comfortable in their clothes; that they could be casually elegant and sophisticated, her theories remain as the underpinning of current style.  She continues to influence another generation of designers and to guide women through an otherwise expensive and frustrating world of ever-changing fashion.

Chanel decreed that being well-dressed is about timeless style.  To prove that being comfortable in one’s clothing was not a male privilege, Chanel put women in trousers and blazers.  She also pulled out the pearls for daytime dressing and designed and marketed the little black dress (the LBD) into infinity.   Coco Chanel’s maxim that comfort is key, her innate business sense, enviable capacity for work, uncanny ability to predict what would become the next mode, and her single-mindedness of character, assured that she will always stand in fashion history’s spotlight.

History’s most influential designer returns in a spirited historical portrayal.  Through this performance, “Coco” shares the story of her rise to fame, her fashion theories and innovations, and the creation of her most famous fragrance, Chanel No. 5.  She is also candid about competitors and the men in her life.

The Life and Legacy of Chicago’s Jane Byrne
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Serving as the 40th Mayor of Chicago from April 1979 to April 1983, Byrne made history as the first female ever to be the Mayor of Chicago and the first female to hold the position of Mayor in the second largest city in the United States.

Historian Jim Gibbons will discuss the life of Jane Byrne, the impact she had on the City of Chicago and Navy Pier then and how it affects us today. Gibbons will explain how Byrne with her spunky, educated, and often bold personality, did not just act as Mayor, but was greatly involved with the city’s citizens and much needed causes. Under Byrne’s guidance, the Taste of Chicago began in the summer of 1980. She also met with actor John Belushi to discuss the filming of “The Blues Brothers” in Chicago. Also, to bring attention to the issues affecting the area of Cabrini-Green, Byrne and her husband moved into apartments in Cabrini-Green for 25 days. Byrne not only left a legacy for the city, she was an inspiration to many for years to come. In her honor, Chicago named one of its interchanges, the Jane Byrne Interchange.

Wright Brothers, Wrong Story
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Author talk by William Hazelgrove

This book is the first deconstruction of the Wright Brothers’ myth. They were not — as we have all come to believe–two halves of the same apple. Each had a distinctive role in creating the first “flying machine.”

How could two misanthropic brothers who never left home, were high-school dropouts, and made a living as bicycle mechanics have figured out the secret of manned flight? This new history of the Wright Brothers’ monumental accomplishment focuses on their early years of trial and error at Kitty Hawk (1900-1903) and Orville Wright’s epic fight with the Smithsonian Institute and Glenn Curtis. William Hazelgrove makes a convincing case that it was Wilbur Wright who designed the first successful airplane, not Orville. He shows that, while Orville’s role was important, he generally followed his brother’s lead and assisted with the mechanical details to make Wilbur’s vision a reality.

Combing through original archives and family letters, Hazelgrove reveals the differences in the brothers’ personalities and abilities. He examines how the Wright Brothers’ myth was born when Wilbur Wright died early and left his brother to write their history with personal friend John Kelly. The author notes the peculiar inwardness of their family life, business and family problems, bouts of depression, serious illnesses, and yet, rising above it all, was Wilbur’s obsessive zeal to test out his flying ideas. When he found Kitty Hawk, this desolate location on North Carolina’s Outer Banks became his laboratory. By carefully studying bird flight and the Rubik’s Cube of control, Wilbur cracked the secret of aerodynamics and achieved liftoff on December 17, 1903.

Hazelgrove’s richly researched and well-told tale of the Wright Brothers’ landmark achievement captures the excitement of the times at the start of the “American century.”

7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

May is National Stroke Awareness Month, an observance that highlights the importance of knowing the signs and symptoms of stroke and encourages persons to act FAST (Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call 9–1–1) if someone is having a stroke.

It is estimated that 80% of strokes are preventable. This program explains the common stroke risk factors and how to manage them, how to recognize the signs and symptoms of someone having a stroke, and the medical treatment options available for those that experience stroke.

Women of WWII: On the Front Lines & the Home Front
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

During World War II, American women took on many new roles, both in the military and as civilians. Beyond Rosie the Riveter and the Atomic Girls, women made incredible contributions to the war effort. One of the civilian avenues was through the American Red Cross Clubmobile program, which was essentially a mobile club, featuring doughnuts, coffee, and good old American girl-next-door friendliness, all served up at the front lines in Europe, Southeast Asia, India, and Australia - wherever the troops were to be found. Learn more about the Clubmobile program and all the ways in which American women helped win the war!

Motown: The Music That Moved The World
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

In Detroit in the 1960's Motown Records produced hits as efficiently as the Ford Motor Company produced automobiles - 110 Top Ten hits to be exact!  It was the "Sound of Young America" sung by performers like The Supremes, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder.  Using audio and visual content we'll trace the amazing musical journey from the power soul of "Dancing In The Streets" and "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" to the psychedelic soul of "Cloud Nine" and "What's Going On" to the pop soul of The Jackson 5.  Timeless music that moved us then and moves us now.

How to Stand Up for Your Self-Care
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
In an era of mounting stress and anxiety from competing demands, taking on too much at work and at home, and rushing around for everyone but yourself — it's common for self-care to fall off your to-do list, especially as a busy mom. Self-care is more than taking a shower and brushing your teeth — it's taking the time to care for your mind, body, and spirit so that you can live well emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually. Drawing upon practices from Julie's book 108 Yoga and Self-Care Practices for Busy Mamas, this session will teach you practical ways to stand-up for your self-care so that you can more fully enjoy your busy life.

About the Author: Julie M. Gentile is a Millennial working mama, yoga teacher at the Bloomingdale Park District, author of 108 Yoga and Self-Care Practices for Busy Mamas (MSI Press), and professional writer and editor. She has been practicing yoga and meditation for a decade and leading yoga classes since 2011.
