The Immigrant's Wife is historical fiction inspired by the disappearance of the author's great grandfather. Not all men who abandon their families are scoundrels. Anna Patrinos is deserted by her husband. What she doesn’t know is he anonymously exiled to a sanatorium to protect her and their unborn baby from tuberculosis and the ruinous cost of his care. Anna’s battle with ostracism, starvation and assault to keep herself and her child alive interweaves with Charles’ fight to survive and return home to his family.

JB Harris lives in Massachusetts with her husband, three kids and two dogs. Her short fiction has appeared in publications such as Boston Literary Journal, The Beacon Street Review, and Puckerbrush Review. She was recently named a finalist in both the 2022 Hal Prize in Fiction and the WOW Spring 22 Flash Fiction Contest.

Geared for ages 3+

Join us to hear author Susan Evans read from her novel, Mighty Wind, Rushing Waters, and then listen as she tells of her journey into one of the darker sides of American history. Her narrative follows three characters as they each negotiate life at an Indian Boarding School in northern Montana. It is set in 1890, and is based on family histories of members of the Little Shell Tribe—memories shared with Sue. Although historical fiction, the novel represents very real truths to everyone who spoke with her.
Sue’s family is from Gorham (her father grew up on School St). However, Sue now lives in Massachusetts with her husband of 50 years. She owned a tax firm for 30 years, and also volunteered as a music teacher at a small Christian school. She has written two school musicals and several hymns. Mighty Wind, Rushing Waters is her debut novel; she is currently writing a sequel called Native Grace.
