Author Event: Melanie Brooks in conversation with Jennifer Dupree
Melanie Brooks will discuss her recently published memoir, A Hard Silence, with Jennifer Dupree, author of The Miraculous Flight of Owen Leach
.
At a time when HIV/AIDS was widely misunderstood and public perception was shaped by fear, prejudice, and homophobia, Brooks' father contracted the disease from a blood transfusion received during open-heart surgery. Understanding all too well the stigma that would follow both himself and his family, Melanie's father, a surgeon, decided they would all keep his illness a secret. This memoir offers an intimate glimpse into Melanie’s memories of coping with the tragedy of her father’s illness and enduring the loneliness and isolation of not being able to speak.

Book Launch: Robert Foster, Morgan's Mount

Robert Foster left his home state of New Hampshire because Maine had more coast. He can usually be found wandering in the woods. Robert was a teacher for twelve years and taught English in South Korea, Poland, China, and Taiwan. He now works in a lab. He has a Bachelor's degree in Fine Art and a Master's degree in Education, from Plymouth State University. He has always enjoyed writing, but Morgan's Mount is his debut novel. It is inspired by the dark places he's afraid to enter.

More about Morgan’s Mount:

Some men deserve to die twice.

All Marco wanted was a paycheck, a big money job to solve all his problems. The ruined castle and pencil-necked historian were not what he'd expected when he arrived in Wales.

Now, he spends each day running for his life and every night wondering if he's made a huge mistake. Things were bad back in Philadelphia. In Morgan's Mount, they're worse than he'd ever imagined.
