Alfred Hitchcock: The Founding Father of Contemporary Horror Cinema (ONLINE)

Ok, we've already seen programs about the importance of Alfred Hitchcock's output on the history of cinema. However, few people actually realize that Hitchcock was the inventor of what we call the slasher film, films exemplified by movies such as Halloween (1978) and Friday The 13th (1980). In this program, we'll gain deep insight as we explore Alfred Hitchcock's troubled childhood where his neurosis originated from having been raised in Victorian England, and we'll ascertain how this directly resulted in his inner rage and desires being expressed through such films as The Lodger (1927), Rope (1948), Psycho (1960), Torn Curtain (1966), and Frenzy (1972). We will also examine films that were highly influenced by Hitchcock such as Bird With The Crystal Plumage (1971) and more. Not your typical take on Hitchcock, but rather the turning of a whole new page in the master's career.

What’s Ahead for College Admissions for the Class of 2022 and Beyond (ONLINE)

High school students and parents

Registration is required to receive the Zoom link. The link will be emailed to you the day before the program.

COVID-19 has turned the world of college admissions on its head as students face an unprecedented admissions landscape: most colleges have temporarily adopted test optional or test blind policies.  In 2021, applications were up, but many more students were waitlisted than before and admissions rates to many colleges dropped. But what about next year, or the year after that? What does the term “holistic admissions” really mean and how does it impact students?  In this workshop, we will discuss current criteria for college admissions and what students can do to position themselves to gain admissions to the colleges of their choice.

Our Year of Discontent: LICA Concert (HGR)

Artists often see their place to provoke, to voice, to enlighten; their art mirrors the aesthetic standard of the day.  The first half of the annual Long Island Composers Alliance concert has the composers responding to what has been going on in society recently through songs. The second half of the concert is instrumental music in widely varying styles.

Harvard Club of LI 2021 Distinguished Author Event: Meet Mary Bly (ONLINE)

Meet Harvard Club of Long Island 2021 Distinguished Author Mary Bly (aka Eloisa James)

Mary Bly is a Shakespeare professor and chair of the English Department at Fordham University, who is also Eloisa James, wildly successful author of more than 30 historical romance novels that have sold 7 million copies world-wide in 27 languages.

Her most recent novel, Lizzie & Dante, is a departure. It’s her first novel written as Mary, not Louisa, and was called an “emotional roller coaster” written with “a Prosecco-fizzy wit” in one glowing review and a “moving modern-day love story laced with poetry” in another. Set in Italy (where Bly lives part-time), it centers on a Shakespearian scholar who, following some serious setbacks, takes a lavish vacation to address dilemmas of love and life.

Bly graduated from Harvard in 1984 and also earned degrees from Oxford and Yale. She wrote the New York Times bestselling memoir, Paris in Love, about the year her family spent in France.

To learn more about the book and how to purchase it, visit https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/635447/lizzie-and-dante-by-mary-bly/. Participants will have an opportunity to submit questions via the chat box.
