Edgar Allan Poe: From Literature to the Silver Screen (ONLINE)

The literary genius who gave us the mystery, horror, and sci-fi genres is under our microscope for this presentation. Poe's achievements in literature are well documented. But not many know about how long Poe has been influencing cinema. In this program we will watch some short films based on Poe's work, and we'll also see clips from feature films as well. We'll talk about the actors and directors who made a career off of bringing Poe's stories to life, Vincent Price, Roger Corman and so many more. So get ready for thrills and chills as we dig deep into the legend of Edgar Allan Poe and the cinematic macabre he so cleverly influenced. Lecture by Keith Crocker.

The History of the Exploitation Film in American Culture (ONLINE)

An Exploitation film is a film defined as intended to attract an audience by means of its sensationalist or controversial content. And although they featured lurid subject matter, exploitation films of the 1920s, 30s and 40s evaded the strict censorship and scrutiny of the era by claiming to be educational. Movies such as Reefer Madness (1938) Mom and Dad (1945) and She Should Have Said “No” (1949) warned audiences of the dangers of drugs, teenage pregnancy and illicit behavior, all the while reveling in the very sacred images that the film showcased and yet condemned. And in the upcoming decades, exploitation films would cover the subjects of juvenile delinquency, nudist movements, and extraneous violence. Find out all there is to know about this odd cinematic movement that existed to oppose censorship and all the while laughing its way to the bank. Utilizing film clips, memorabilia and taking its cue from the carnies and the carnival midway of Americana, this program is a must for the strong of heart! *NOTE* This program is intended for adult audiences only, do not open this up for children or pre-teens.

Week 3: Pet Pals

Kenny’s many pets keep interrupting his Zoom call and he is frustrated! So Page Turner tells him the folktale, It Could Always be Worse.

Then she gives it a modern-day twist by transporting the tale (and the audience) to a library filled with animals, a magical book,

a wacky librarian named, Miss Understood. Based on the book SUCH A LIBRARY! By Jill Ross Nadler (aka Page Turner).

Guest: Jamie Katz, Pet Detective.

Yup, pet detectives are really a thing, and Jamie Katz (her REAL name!) is one of the best as Kenny and Page found out first

hand when Jamie helped them find their lost cat, Philo. Jamie will introduce us to her sniffer dogs, Gable and Fletcher

and show us how they help her find lost pets.

All are welcome, no registration required.

William Castle: The Ultimate Showman (ONLINE)

William Castle was the ultimate film promotion artist of the 1950's. Anyone who's ever seen House on Haunted Hill (1958), The Tingler (1959), 13 Ghosts (1960) will attest to this. Emergo- The skeleton flying over the audiences who paid to see House on Haunted Hill, movie theater seats wired with a minor electrical voltage to give the audience of the Tingler the sensation that the Tingler itself was crawling up on them, or even the special glasses you needed to put on in order to see the ghosts in 13 Ghosts. Castle knew how to sell a picture and keep audiences coming back for more. This program will give you a complete history of William Castles, from his humble beginnings right through his pioneer horror pictures of the 1950's and finally to his acceptance by the art-house crowd for his production of Rosemary's Baby. Includes film memorabilia and a selection of trailers from Castles work via DVD.
