The Pittsburgh Savoyards present - The Gondoliers
8:00 PM

March 15 - 24, 2019

Tickets

The Pittsburgh Savoyards close their 81st season with Gilbert and Sullivan’s popular Italian-themed operetta, The Gondoliers or, the King of Barataria.

The Gondoliers by Gilbert and Sullivan tells the story of two charming Venetian gondoliers, Giuseppe and Marco, who are informed that due to an error of identity when they were young boys, one of them is the heir to the throne of Barataria.  They are delighted with the situation and agree to share the responsibilities of governing their new kingdom until it can be ascertained which of them is which, but matters are complicated when the Duke and Duchess of Plaza Toro reveal that their beautiful daughter, Casilda, was married to the future king as an infant.  The problem?  Giuseppe and Marco are both newly married to the contadine Tessa and Gianetta, and Casilda is in love with her father’s attendant, Luiz.  After much confusion, lots of exuberant dancing, and jolly Italianate musical ensembles, the stage is set for leaving all concerned, including the audience, with feelings of pleasure!

Women of the World War II Home Front
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

"Women of the World War II Home Front" is a fashion-focused program on the role of women in both the US and the UK during the war and how fashions reflected both their wartime roles and the impact of the war itself.  For example, some materials (such as silk and nylon were not available for clothing (as  they were needed for wartime exigencies such as parachutes, etc.) and styles reflected the somberness of the times (for example, wedding dresses became much simpler, discarding ornate, frilly designs).  Women's role in wartime industries was also reflected in clothing design.

The fashion component will consist of a slide presentation with live commentary by Britsburgh's  Deborah Popp Gilbert, Vice President of the Elizabeth Township Historical Society. Debbie draws on the Society's vintage clothing collection to inform her presentation and will bring several of these antique outfits on mannequins for display during the program.

Also included is a 1940s-themed tea, including desserts such as "WW2 War Cake," the recipe for which reflects wartime shortages in its elimination of butter and use of alternate sweeteners rather than white sugar.

The presentation will take place at 2:00 p.m. followed by the afternoon tea at 3:00 p.m.  Register via Britsburgh's website at www.britsburgh.com by March 28.

2nd Saturday Lecture Series
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Muskets & Applejack: Spirits, Soldiers and the Civil War

Speaker: Mark Will-Weber. Historian Mark Will-Weber has produced a fascinating, poignant and oft times hilarious read about one of the rarely-mentioned and little researched factors of the Civil War: Booze. This lecture highlights what Dan Sickles once called the "whiskey war." While alcohol didn't cause the war, it certainly had an impact on the conflict from the halls of Congress to the country's most hallowed battlefields. From the first intoxicated shots at Fort Sumter to the final toasts at Appomattox, the author totals up who drank what and when -- and how famous campaigns may have happened somewhat "under the influence."

Light refreshments served. Registration not required. Free and open to the public. 2nd Saturday Lecture Series made possible by the Massey Charitable Trust. Lecture is being held in the Lincoln Gallery.
