Mission Siberia 2006 & the Lithuanian deportations to Siberia
8:00 PM - 9:30 PM

Mission Siberia  & the Lithuanian Deportees to Siberia

Following a 1939 pact between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union dividing Eastern Europe, the Baltic States, including Lithuania, fell under the Russian Sphere and so the Soviet Union prepared for occupation. Between 1940 and 1953 more than one hundred thousand Lithuanians were deported to Gulag camps and other forced settlements in Siberia and remote areas of the former Soviet Union. Many died in exile while others were slowly released following Stalin’s death. Still many remained in Siberia, unable to return to Lithuania.

For decades few Lithuanians knew the stories of these deportees. In 2006, The Lithuanian Youth Council initiated “Mission Siberia” to raise awareness, memorialize the victims of the deportation and forge ties with Lithuanians still living in Siberia.

Each year Mission Siberia sends 15 young Lithuanians to Siberia and other areas in the former Soviet Union to research, tidy up Lithuanian cemeteries and meet survivors and their families.

On Saturday, May 19 Pittsburgh Lithuanian School offers a unique opportunity to hear from participant, Justinas Riškus, and his experiences during his recent mission to Siberia.

It's November 21, 1963. On the eve of their deployment to a small but growing conflict in Southeast Asia, three young Marines set out for one final boys' night of debauchery, partying and maybe a little trouble. But, when Corporal Eddie Birdlace meets Rose, an awkward and idealistic waitress whom he enlists to win a cruel bet with his fellow recruits, she rewrites the rules of the game and teaches him the power of love and compassion. Contains language and themes intended for an adult audience.

THE FILM: One of Alfred Hitchcock's very best efforts, Rear Window is a crackling suspense film that also ranks with Michael Powell's Peeping Tom (1960) as one of the movies' most trenchant dissections of voyeurism. 2nd Saturday Lecture Series
1:00 PM - 2:30 PM

The 11th Corps at Gettysburg - Evan Portman

By June of 1863, the Eleventh Corps of the Union Army of the Potomac was considered an inept fighting force by many in the army. Commanded by Oliver Otis Howard and largely comprised of German and European immigrants, the corps was victim to Stonewall Jackson's devastating flank attack in the Battle of Chancellorsville. This humiliation, as well as contempt between the men and some of their commanders, induced conflict and distrust within the ranks. However, the men of the Eleventh Corps, called the "flying Dutchmen" by fellow Union soldiers, marched into Pennsylvania in the Gettysburg Campaign with an eagerness to prove themselves in the coming battle.

By an ironic twist of fate, they again found themselves on the flank of the Union army, exposed to and outnumbered by an advancing Confederate force. Howard, too, would be tested by the death of his immediate superior, Gen. John F. Reynolds, forcing him to take temporary command of all the Federal troops on the field, as well as his task to command one of the key pieces of terrain on the battlefield: Cemetery Hill. The Corps' controversial performance on the field of Gettysburg is oftentimes overlooked by visitors and students of history alike. Yet, their story is one of both failure and ultimate triumph over the course of the three days of bloody fighting.

Mr. Portman is a fledgling historian and continuing education instructor with the Penn-Trafford Area Recreation Commission, giving frequent lectures on their behalf. His interest and enthusiasm for Civil War history began with a trip to Gettysburg when he was seven years old. He is currently a senior at Penn-Trafford High School and plans to attend college in the Fall.

Free and open to the public. 2nd Saturday Lecture Series made possible by the Massey Charitable Trust.

THE FILM:  During a Los Angeles Christmas, a group of 82nd Airborne vets assembles under the leadership of gamblin' man Danny Ocean (Frank Sinatra) to rip off five Las Vegas casinos just after the stroke of midnight on New Year's Day. Playboy Jimmy Foster (Peter Lawford) joins in the scheme because he's sick of needing his oft-married mother's money, especially now that she's about to wed Duke Santos (Cesar Romero), a self-made man with all sorts of underworld ties. After he receives the news that he could die at any time, newly released convict Anthony Bergdorf (Richard Conte) reluctantly agrees to participate so he can leave some money to his estranged wife and young son. Ocean's own wife, Beatrice (Angie Dickinson), doesn't think much of her husband's promise of a big score to come, but her quiet protests don't dissuade him. With Las Vegas garbage man and fellow vet Josh Howard (Sammy Davis Jr.) and several casino employees among their number, the titular band of thieves have just a few days to get ready for their caper. When Duke Santos, Jimmy's mother, and one of Ocean's discarded paramours all show up in Sin City at the same time as the veterans, the crew's perfect plans face some serious hurdles. ~ Brian J. Dillard, Rovi  (Classic/Drama/Crime/Drama/1960/PG/128 min)
