The Pittsburgh Savoyards present - The Yeoman of the Guard

October 12 - 21, 2018

Tickets

The Pittsburgh Savoyards Presents Gilbert & Sullivan’s, The Yeomen of the Guard.  The only tragedy ever written by G & S!!!
The Yeomen of the Guard, or The Merryman and His Maid is Gilbert and Sullivan’s sparkling comic opera set in Shakespearean times during the reign of King Henry VIII. It is the darkest and most emotionally engaging of the Savoy Operas. The show takes place in the Tower of London where the gentleman Colonel Fairfax is wrongly accused of sorcery and sentenced to death within the hour. Fairfax hatches a plan to avoid letting his estate fall into the hands of his scheming cousin (incidentally, his accuser) by secretly marrying Elsie Maynard, a strolling singer. She agrees to be blindfolded during the ceremony and expects to be a wealthy widow upon Fairfax's imminent demise, leaving her free to marry her lover, the jester Jack Point. However, Fairfax miraculously escapes his fate and chaos ensues.  Come and enjoy what is considered Sullivan’s best musical score with a full orchestra and laugh and weep during this jolly romp!

Listen Locally Tom Roberts with The Allegheny City Ragtime Orchestra
7:30 PM - 9:00 PM

“A Tribute to James Reese Europe and The Harlem Hellfighters”

TICKETS

We commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I with a rare opportunity to share the music of Lieut. James Reese Europe performed by The Allegheny City Ragtime Orchestra. Europe was a leading figure in the American music and military circles in the early 20th century.

Arranger, composer, union organizer and Army National Guard Lieutenant, Europe led his men to Carnegie Hall and on the Western Front. Europe served as band leader and officer for the 369th Infantry Regiment, named “The Harlem Hellfighters” for their battlefield prowess. Sent to assist the French, the 369th was the first black American infantry regiment to fight in WWI and spent more time under fire than any other US military unit. They’re among the most decorated American units of WWI. The 369th Infantry Regiment band gained equal notoriety by extensive touring overseas and introducing American jazz to Europe.

Tom Roberts, one of the leading exponents of early jazz piano in the world today, has arranged and performed the music for the soundtrack of Martin Scorsese’s film The Aviator, as well as several titles for the film DeLovely. He has also arranged music for the syndicated PRI show Riverwalk Jazz, Live from the Landing with the Jim Cullum Jazz Band, and a number of pieces for Wynton Marsalis and The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra for a concert of the music of Louis Armstrong in October 2006.

2nd Saturday Lecture Series
1:00 PM - 2:30 PM

Felled by Friendly Fire: The Wounding of James Longstreet - Speaker is Kristopher White, Education Manager, American Battlefield Trust

“Old Pete,” Lee’s second-in-command, was a stalwart that the “Gray Fox” relied on as the 1864 campaigns opened. However, just hours after Longstreet saved Lee’s army along the Orange Plank Road in the Wilderness, tragedy struck. While riding along the road during an audacious and successful flank attack, Longstreet, like Stonewall Jackson, was accidentally shot by his own men, less than three miles from the spot of Jackson’s fateful wounding. Longstreet’s wounding, like Jackson’s, forever changed the face of the Army of Northern Virginia.

Light refreshments served. Registration not required. Free and open to the public. 2nd Saturday Lecture Series made possible by the Massey Charitable Trust.
