Carl's Story
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Join us as we celebrate the upcoming 100th anniversary of the World War I Armistice. Carl's Story begins in the woods near St. Mihiel, France, almost a century ago on September 16, 1918. On that victorious day, when the US Army won its first battle in Europe and the war was just days from ending, Carl Willig, a doughboy in company H and the uncle of author, Noretta Willig, was killed. An eye-witness wrote Carl's parents that "he suffered no pain, my dear friends. Death was instantaneous." But Carl was lost. His remains could not be found. For three generations, his family felt the grief of that loss.

Ninety years after Carl's death, Noretta Willig's phone rang and a genealogist identified Noretta as Carl's next of kin. Why? Because "probably they found something." Searching a trunk filled with faded photographs and letters, Noretta met Carl across the years and learned what a powerful man young Carl was. Carl's Story is about the almost forgotten heroes, those who must be remembered. It is an American story--of family and duty, discovery and honor--about treasures lost then found.

Light refreshments. Free and open to the public. Author book sale and signing following the program. Proceeds from the sale of books are being donated to veterans in need. There will be a display of World War I Medals for this presentation courtesy of David Burrows.

The Pittsburgh Savoyards present - The Yeoman of the Guard

October 12 - 21, 2018

Tickets

The Pittsburgh Savoyards Presents Gilbert & Sullivan’s, The Yeomen of the Guard.  The only tragedy ever written by G & S!!!
The Yeomen of the Guard, or The Merryman and His Maid is Gilbert and Sullivan’s sparkling comic opera set in Shakespearean times during the reign of King Henry VIII. It is the darkest and most emotionally engaging of the Savoy Operas. The show takes place in the Tower of London where the gentleman Colonel Fairfax is wrongly accused of sorcery and sentenced to death within the hour. Fairfax hatches a plan to avoid letting his estate fall into the hands of his scheming cousin (incidentally, his accuser) by secretly marrying Elsie Maynard, a strolling singer. She agrees to be blindfolded during the ceremony and expects to be a wealthy widow upon Fairfax's imminent demise, leaving her free to marry her lover, the jester Jack Point. However, Fairfax miraculously escapes his fate and chaos ensues.  Come and enjoy what is considered Sullivan’s best musical score with a full orchestra and laugh and weep during this jolly romp!
