Refresh your driving skills with the AARP Smart Driver Course! You will learn defensive driving techniques, proven safety strategies, and new traffic laws and rules of the road. There are no tests to pass — simply sign up and learn. Upon completion you could receive a discount on your car insurance.

This is a refresher course. To qualify, you must have a certificate less than 3 years old. $15 for AARP members, $20 for non-members.

Please call the library to register. This class will fill up, so call early!

This maker open house provides a space for families to learn and work together on inventive projects with their school-age kids. We’ll have new ideas each month, so bring your imagination! No registration required. 

  •  August 4 – Buttons, Buttons, Buttons – Drop by to try the Button Machine—a press that makes your artwork or collage into wearable button-pins. You can bring your own (one inch) artwork to use, or create on the spot. 
  • September 1 – Learn to Sew – a workshop involving basic needle and thread projects for older children,  with simpler beading and lacing card projects for younger kids.
  • October 6 – Monster Masks – come express your inner monster and create a wild mask with paper collage.
  • November 3 – Birdseed Feeders – Share your love with our feathered friends by making a backyard bird feeder with sunflower seed butter and birdseed.
  • December 1 – Holiday Cards – Design one of a kind seasonal cards for your friends and family using paper stamps, stencils and paint. Bring your ideas and imagination.

Local Poetry Reading: Judith Brice

Local poet Judith Brice and special guests Jen Ashburn, Joan E. Bauer and Robert Walicki will be reading selections of their work in honor of Brice’s second full-length poetry collection, Overhead from Longing. 

Refreshments provided. Free admission.

Judith Brice is the author of Renditions in a Palette (David Robert Books, 2013) and Overhead From Longing (David Robert Books, 2018). Her more than 50 published poems have appeared previously in The Paterson Literary Review, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, VoxPopuli.com and Versewrights.com, among many other national publications. 

Jen Ashburn is the author of The Light on the Wall (Main Street Rag, 2016), and has work published or forthcoming in numerous venues, including The Writer’s Almanac, The MacGuffin, Whiskey Island and The Fourth River. She holds an MFA from Chatham University, where she taught creative writing to women in the Allegheny County Jail through Chatham’s Words Without Walls program. 

Joan E. Bauer is the author of The Almost Sound of Drowning (Main Street Rag, 2008). Her poems have twice been nominated for a Pushcart Prize, and in 2007 she won the Earle Birney Poetry Prize from Prism International. She co-hosts and curates the Hemingway's Summer Poetry Series in Pittsburgh.

Local poet Judith Brice and special guests Jen Ashburn, Joan E. Bauer and Robert Walicki will be reading selections of their work in honor of Brice’s second full-length poetry collection, Overhead from Longing.

Judith Brice is the author of Renditions in a Palette (David Robert Books, 2013) and Overhead From Longing (David Robert Books, 2018). Her more than 50 published poems have appeared previously in The Paterson Literary Review, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, VoxPopuli.com and Versewrights.com, among many other national publications. 

Jen Ashburn is the author of The Light on the Wall (Main Street Rag, 2016), and has work published or forthcoming in numerous venues, including The Writer’s Almanac, The MacGuffin, Whiskey Island and The Fourth River. She holds an MFA from Chatham University, where she taught creative writing to women in the Allegheny County Jail through Chatham’s Words Without Walls program. 

Joan E. Bauer is the author of The Almost Sound of Drowning (Main Street Rag, 2008). Her poems have twice been nominated for a Pushcart Prize, and in 2007 she won the Earle Birney Poetry Prize from Prism International. She co-hosts and curates the Hemingway's Summer Poetry Series in Pittsburgh.

We are an independent, local affiliate of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance. At support group meetings, people share experiences, personal feelings, information, and strategies for living successfully with mood disorders. The Pittsburgh support group is volunteer run and provides self-help through facilitated meetings. Meetings are open to the public and free of charge.

Maker Corner

This maker open house provides a space for families to learn and work together on inventive projects with their school-age kids. We’ll have new ideas each month, so bring your imagination! No registration required. 

  •  August 4 – Buttons, Buttons, Buttons – Drop by to try the Button Machine—a press that makes your artwork or collage into wearable button-pins. You can bring your own (one inch) artwork to use, or create on the spot. 
  • September 1 – Learn to Sew – a workshop involving basic needle and thread projects for older children,  with simpler beading and lacing card projects for younger kids.
  • October 6 – Monster Masks – come express your inner monster and create a wild mask with paper collage.
  • November 3 – Birdseed Feeders – Share your love with our feathered friends by making a backyard bird feeder with sunflower seed butter and birdseed.
  • December 1 – Holiday Cards – Design one of a kind seasonal cards for your friends and family using paper stamps, stencils and paint. Bring your ideas and imagination.
