Author Talk: Susan Kaplan Carlton (Main)

Author Susan Kaplan Carlton will discuss her new young adult novel In the Neighborhood of True. In the sticky summer of 1958, Ruth Robb and her family move to Atlanta, the land of sweet tea, debutante dances, and the Ku Klux Klan. To fit in with the popular pastel posse, Ruth keeps the fact that she's Jewish to herself-and soon she's knocking back Coca-Colas with dreamy Davis at the country club. But a heartbreaking night brings Ruth's two worlds into conflict, and she's forced to choose between standing up for what she believes and losing everything she's come to love about her new life. Sponsored by The Friends of the Concord Free Public Library.

Cookbook Club (Fowler Branch)

What do you get when you cross a cookbook with a book group?  A Cookbook Club, of course!

Check out a copy of the selected cookbooks (starting on April 24th) at the library, pick a recipe (we'll keep track to avoid duplicates), and prepare it for the program. We'll sample lots of good food, talk about what worked and what didn't, and select future cookbooks.

For May, we will create recipes from Spain! This month's book titles are My kitchen in Spain : 225 authentic regional recipes, by Janet Mendel, La cocina de mamá : the great home cooking of Spain, by Penelope Casas, Cúrate : authentic Spanish food from an American kitchen, by Katie Button, and Tapas : the little dishes of Spain, by Penelope Casas. Copies of the titles will be available at the Main and Fowler Libraries to check out.

Mindful Transitions: Change as a Great Adventure (Main)

Life is full of change: school years end, kids leave for college, parents age, health concerns arise, careers shifts, unexpected events unfold – oh my! How can we face life’s transitions without feeling utterly overwhelmed? One way is to experience life as moments of possibility through mindful wellness practices. As Roz Zander writes in The Art of Possibility: Transforming Professional and Personal Life, we can “draw a different frame around the same set of circumstances and new pathways come into view.” Join us to discuss cultivating new practices that reduce anxiety and help us thrive. Launch your adventure toward possibility and contentment!

Lara JK Wilson, MA, GCMS - A meditator for over thirty years, Lara’s practices explore how mindfulness and the creative process benefit health. In addition to completing a Master’s Certificate in Mindfulness Studies at Lesley University, Lara is an award-winning author of short stories and a Grub Street instructor and former board member with a master’s degree in literature from Harvard, Lara advocates incorporating mindfulness in all levels of education. She has developed mindfulness curricula for schools in the north and south, led mindful wellness retreats, and designed personal practice with hundreds. After experiencing the power of mindfulness during eighteen months of cancer treatment, Lara established Be Well Be Here, a non-profit collaborative mindful wellness center in Concord, MA. Twenty Classic American Comedies and Why They Are Good for You, a talk by Randall Warniers (Fowler)

American cinema has a long and glorious tradition of movie comedy, from the brilliant physical comedy of silent films to the witty and socially conscious studio comedies of the 1930s and 1940s. This one-hour presentation will do a quick flyover of the history of early movie comedy, and then focus on twenty important and often lesser-known comedies from 1931 to 1950, including films by comic masters such as Charlie Chaplin, Ernst Lubitisch, Preston Sturges, Frank Capra, Gregory La Cava, Mitchell Leisen, Leo McCarey, George Cukor, Howard Hawks, and Billy Wilder. These films are hilarious but they are more than just funny. The best comedies probe the foibles of human psychology to reveal fundamental comic truths about human nature. We won’t watch any of the films during the talk, but all are available on DVD, and every attendee will receive a list of the twenty selected films (plus other examples!) for future reference and viewing.
