What Is a Gap Year?

What Is a Gap Year?

presented by Katherine Stievater

Ever wondered if taking a Gap Year is right for you? More and more, U.S. teens are considering their options before jumping right from high school to college. Rather than simply choosing among colleges, many of today’s high school seniors are also beginning to defer the college experience – usually for a year. The Gap Year – which has been a standard practice in Europe for years – is growing rapidly in popularity here in the U.S. Experience has shown that 90% of students taking a Gap Year will enroll in a four year college, and be more focused, mature and ready to embrace college learning. There are so many choices, and there is no “perfect" Gap Year. However, it is important for students to make thoughtful choices, so their experience helps them grow as citizens, develop their passions, and become better thinkers.

Katherine Stievater, a Gap Year Advisor and Founder of Gap Year Solutions, will explain why Gap Years are growing in popularity and how any student can benefit from a Gap Year. She will explain different Gap Year options and the Gap Year planning process, including how it relates to college planning.  This program is open to all, but is especially for juniors, seniors, and parents.  Please register.

Poets of light, clarity, and brio: Adam Scheffler, Carla Schwartz, Alison Stone (Main)

All are invited to an afternoon of poetry and conversation with Adam Scheffler, Carla Schwartz, and Alison Stone who will read from and talk about their most recent invigorating and enlightening collections. This Poetry at the Library Series reading will be held on Sunday, January 27 at 3 pm, in the Main Library’s Periodical Room. A Question and Answer session, book-signings, and light refreshments are included in the free, open to the public Poetry Series sponsored by The Friends of the Library.

Adam Scheffler’s  A Dog’s Life  was selected as the winner of the Jacar Press Poetry Book Contest by Denise Duhamel who called it  “an enlightened look at Doritos, Carson Daly, Walmart, McDonalds, theme parks, and, of course, dogs.” An Iowa Writers’ Workshop graduate with a Harvard PhD in English, Adam is a Preceptor in Harvard’s Expository Writing Program for which he teaches a course on Hell and the Underworld.

Carla Schwartz’s Intimacy with the Wind (Finishing Line Press), is inspired by her nomadic off-the-grid living in a tiny, solar-powered houseboat on Lake Champlain –poems praised by poet Fred Marchant for giving us “a vivid sense of being in the world, as if we are with her breathing in what life has to offer, a good wind overhead, like a blessing."  Carla is also a professional writer with a PhD in electrical engineering from Princeton University.

Alison Stone’s Dazzle displays “… a string of gemlike poems that …dazzle—with wisdom, wit, and brio.” Author of six collections, Alison has been awarded Poetry’s Frederick Bock Prize, New York Quarterly’s Madeline Sadin Award, and the Many Mountains Moving Poetry Award. Published in The Paris Review, Ploughshares, and many other journals and anthologies, Alison is a recent Writer-in Residence at LitSpace St. Pete.  She is also a painter and a licensed psychotherapist.

Twenty Classic Film Noirs and Why They Are Good For You (Fowler)

Join Randall Warniers for a talk on Twenty Classic Film Noir films and why they are good for you!

Film noir is a term that describes certain moody low-budget B-movie Hollywood dramas of the 1940s and 1950s that feature hardboiled narratives, starkly graphic cinematography, down-on-their-luck characters, and an inescapable mood of menace, pessimism, crime, and despair. This talk will describe twenty superb examples of the film noir genre, made by some of the best screenwriters, producers, cinematographers, directors, and performers in the film industry. We won't watch the films during the talk, but all are available on DVD, and every attendee will receive a list of the twenty selected films for future reference. If you are moved by the beautifully dark visual style of film noir, or if you want to see Humphrey Bogart, Barbara Stanwyck, Burt Lancaster, Audrey Totter, or Gloria Grahame work their movie magic, or if you are looking for a taut existential drama on a cold winter night, then this is the talk for you.

This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Concord Free Public Library.

Mindful Parenting in the Age of Acronyms (Main)

Has your child been diagnosed with a “disorder” that feels more nuanced than a line of letters? The path to understanding these nuances through mindful wellness practices can help parents reflect and connect with their children. Learn mindfulness techniques that cultivate greater awareness of the practice of parenting, foster authenticity, and allow harmonious relationships to bloom. Feel encouraged - and pass it on!

Lara JK Wilson, MA, GCMS - A meditator for over thirty years, Lara’s practices explore how mindfulness and the creative process benefit health. In addition to completing a Master’s Certificate in Mindfulness Studies at Lesley University, Lara is an award-winning author of short stories and a Grub Street instructor and former board member with a master’s degree in literature from Harvard, Lara advocates incorporating mindfulness in all levels of education. She has developed mindfulness curricula for schools in the north and south, led mindful wellness retreats, and designed personal practice with hundreds. After experiencing the power of mindfulness during eighteen months of cancer treatment, Lara established Be Well Be Here, a non-profit collaborative mindful wellness center in Concord, MA. Learn more at BeWellBeHere.org

Friday Night Flicks at Fowler presents Midnight in Paris (Fowler)

Join the Friends of the Concord Free Public Library for a screening of Midnight in Paris (USA, Spain 2011).

Summary: Owen Wilson, Marion Cotillard, Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates, and Carla Bruni star in Woody Allen's romantic comedy about a family on a business trip in the City of Light. As a young couple engaged to be married experiences a profound transformation during their visit to Paris, an idealistic man with a romanticized view of the city finds that there's plenty of truth to that old adage about the grass being greener on the other side. Michael Sheen, Mimi Kennedy, and Kurt Fuller co-star.

Mindful Creative Writing (Main)

Energize the creative force within! Whether you journal for pleasure, dabble with fiction or non-fiction, or hope to publish your work, writing mindfully can move you toward a new dimension of self-expression. In this session, we’ll tap into your imagination to observe the world with greater inspiration and focus. Discover practices that generate new work, celebrate your authentic voice, and express your ideas with greater confidence.

Friday Night Flicks at Fowler presents Lost in Paris (Fowler)

Join the Friends of the Concord Free Public Library for a screening of Lost in Paris (France/Belgium 2016).

Summary: Filmed in Dominique Abel and Fiona Gordon's signature whimsical style, and stars the filmmakers as a small-town Canadian librarian and a strangely seductive, oddly egotistical French vagabond. When Fiona's orderly life is disrupted by a letter of distress from her elderly Aunt Martha who is living in Paris, Fiona hops on the first plane she can and arrives only to discover that Martha has disappeared. In an avalanche of spectacular disasters, she encounters Dom, the affable, but annoying tramp won't leave her alone. (In English and French)
