Author Talk - Searching for Subversives, by Mary Elizabeth Basile Chopas (Main Library)

Author Mary Elizabeth Basile Chopas will discuss her book Searching for Subversives: the story of Italian Internment in Wartime America.

When the United States entered World War II, Italian nationals living in this country were declared enemy aliens and faced with legal restrictions. Several thousand aliens and a few U.S. citizens were arrested and underwent flawed hearings, and hundreds were interned. Shedding new light on an injustice often overshadowed by the mass confinement of Japanese Americans, Mary Elizabeth Basile Chopas traces how government and military leaders constructed wartime policies affecting Italian residents. Based on new archival research into the alien enemy hearings, this in-depth legal analysis illuminates a process not widely understood. From presumptive guilt in the arrest and internment based on membership in social and political organizations, to hurdles in attaining American citizenship, Chopas uncovers many layers of repression not heretofore revealed in scholarship about the World War II home front.

Mary Elizabeth Basile Chopas has been an adjunct professor of law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

There are 40 spaces available.

Butterfly, the life of artist James McNeil Whistler - a one man show with Stephen Collins (Main)

Butterfly is a one man show, written by Carl A. Rossi, about the life and times of New England native, James McNeil Whistler, the volatile American artist who struggled for personal freedom and artistic expression mostly in Victorian England. The play depicts Whistler at two phases of his life—first, as a bankrupt artist on commission in Venice in his forties and then as the established yet lonely legend in his sixties in London.

Stephen Collins currently performs eight one-man shows and has met with rave reviews for over a decade. His performances deliver not just the poetry and plays, but they bring poets and playwrights to life on the stage. Collins is a frequent lecturer at library forums, historical societies, senior centers and professional organizations. He grew up in Cambridge, and received a BA in Literature from UMass Boston. Recently, he has been teaching seminars on
Whitman, Hardy, Shakespeare, Frost and Contemporary Poetry at various locations throughout the country.

* Sponsored by the Friends of the Concord Free Public Library.
