AMC Potluck and Presentation: First Woman Solo Canoe of the NFCT

In the summer of 2015, at age 53, Laurie Apgar Chandler became the first woman to solo thru-paddle New England’s Northern Forest Canoe Trail. Achieving her improbable dream, to travel 740 miles alone in a small canoe, was by no means certain. Relatively new to wilderness paddling, she encountered challenges, expected and unexpected, that pushed her to the limits of her courage and endurance. Surprisingly, the scariest of these had a human face. Providing one of the first looks at the country’s longest mapped inland paddling route, this tale weaves faith, nature, and the goodness of people into an inspiring adventure on storied waterways like the Allagash.

Join us as Laurie regales us with stories and photos from this incredible journey.  Her book, Upwards, will be available for purchase.

Potluck dinner will start at 6pm (please bring a dish to share, help us be green and bring your own cup, plates and silverware). Presentation at 7pm. Free and open to the public.

Imaginging Pejepscot: Creating a Maine Regional Identity in Maps and Postcards

Hosted by Pejepscot Historical Society, this multimedia presentation by Libby Bischof, Professor of History and Director of the Osher Map Library at University of Southern Maine, looks at how the concept of "Maine," and specifically the greater Pejepscot region, was created visually, first through maps, and later through images on postcards and other media. Bischof is also the creator of the Maine Postcard Project, which promotes the history and resurgence of postcards as a communication device. Maine postcards and stamps will be handed out at the talk for people to write and send. PHS Members $5 / General Public $8. Refreshments served.

Ocean Acidification, Climate Change, and You: A Casco Bay Matters Event

Climate change is affecting the health of Casco Bay faster than anyone could have predicted. Warming temperatures and increasing acidity threaten the ocean and the livelihoods of those who depend on the sea. Research is showing that changes in our coastal waters from climate change are putting lobstering, clamming, and aquaculture at risk.

Friends of Casco Bay invites you to attend Ocean Acidification, Climate Change, and You, a free event, open to all.

Staff scientist Mike Doan will talk about the warning signs we see in our monitoring data. Casco Baykeeper Ivy Frignoca will share some of the impacts to our marine species and how Mainers are working together to respond to these threats. They look forward to your questions following the presentation.

The purpose of a Casco Bay Matters is to provide an opportunity for concerned citizens and for legislators (especially local and state officials) to learn about and discuss issues of importance to protecting the water quality of Casco Bay.

AMC Potluck and Presentation: Wyoming Wilderness Backpacking

Join our group of three as we make our way, both on and off trail, through Wyoming's spectacular Gros Ventre Wilderness. Five nights, no permits, no reservations, no crowds, and hardly any trail signs.

We'll spend plenty of quality time above treeline, scramble over steep, exposed terrain, and pull native trout out of sparkling backcountry lakes.

Jonathan Rundell is an avid hiker and photographer.  This is his third presentation for the Maine chapter.

You are in for a real treat in this wonderful landscape. The Gros Ventre Wilderness is a gem in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.  The Wilderness provides critical habitat for many species of wildlife, hosts the headwaters of multiple Wild and Scenic Rivers and offers miles and miles of trails. In addition, the Gros Ventre Wilderness is famous for it's incredible geological features, from alpine peaks to red, purple and yellow rocky slopes.

So we hope you will join us on this photo journey into one of our treasured public lands.

Potluck dinner will start at 6pm (please bring a dish to share, help us be green and bring your own cup, plates and silverware). Presentation at 7pm. Free and open to the public.

Family Art Drop In

We are experimenting with SCULPTURE! Using cardboard, pipe cleaners, beads and more, we will assemble 3-Dimensional works of art.  Do you want to make a soft sculpture burger like Claes Oldenburg's?  Create a jeweled "Faberge" inspired animal? Assemble a mobile in the style of Alexander Calder?

This is a casual drop in so stay as little or as long as you feel inspired!

Brunswick Area Storytelling Society (BASS)
I will have information about other storytelling groups in Maine and beyond and handouts about storytelling.  We will discuss how we would like our group to function.

Of course, there will be stories!  I always have a story or two....and I have ways of prompting stories out of folks who think they don't have any!
Please come and share in the start of a new adventure.
