Round the World Birding
A special presentation by Becky Marvil
Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at 7:00pm
Curtis Memorial Library (Morrell Room), Brunswick
Sponsored by Merrymeeting Audubon and the Cathance River Education Alliance (CREA)

In the summer of 2015, Becky Marvil spent 30 days with her husband, Josh (a pilot), and two other couples traveling around the world in a private plane. From the volcanic islands of the Azores to the 106-degree heat of the Oman to the chilly, drizzly coast of Alaska, Becky will share her photos and stories of bird species from around the globe.

Their route took them from the U.S. to Newfoundland, the Azores, Turkey, Oman, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Taiwan, Russia, and Alaska. In addition to sightseeing and learning about different cultures, she enjoyed focusing on the birds, photographing and videotaping many species and learning about regional family variations and similarities from one stop to the next.

Becky Marvil lives with her family in Yarmouth, Maine. She has a background in Biology, Ornithology, and Computer Science and runs her own computer programming/webpage design business. She has been the Executive Director of the Acadia Birding Festival for 8 years, combining her knowledge of webpage design, organizational skills, and love of birding. She is also the Secretary for the Maine Bird Records Committee, an eBird Hotspot monitor for Maine, and just recently became a regional coordinator for the Maine Breeding and Wintering Bird Atlas. During her free time, she helps with local bird surveys, chases after rarities, and loves to travel and enjoy birds in new locations.

Fireside Writers Writing Group

If you like to write, but need time and a place to do it, please come join us! On any given Friday, from 10-11:30 am, consider coming to a writing session in Brunswick at the Curtis Memorial Library in the beautiful Fireplace Room of the CML's 1904 Building. The concept for the group is simple:

"I love the quiet that comes over a writing room, and the community that builds from this shared silence. That’s what this writing group is all about. We will gather as writers, simply to write in the quiet company of one another, in one of the library’s coziest spaces – not to critique each other’s work (although of course that’s good practice, too!), but to write fireside, for a dedicated time in an extraordinary place." --Molly McGrath, host of the Fireside Writers

Fireside Writers is a drop-in program (registration is not needed--you can come once, occasionally, or weekly), open to the public, with an open door policy--all abilities and ages are welcome. Free wifi is available. Bring your own notebooks and pens or laptops. A beautiful rug is underfoot, Captain Skolfield's ship in on the mantelpiece, and lamps, buttery leather couches and armchairs, and rocking chairs await you. Portraits of Captain and Mrs. Curtis welcome you. Free coffee is in the lobby, and fires will be lit in the wintertime.

Creative Writing Group

A monthly, introductory-level writing group run by an author of novels and stories, for anyone interested in applying their language skills to creative endeavors. While the meetings will be geared to fiction, poets are welcome too--and so are people who've been (perhaps secretly) working on various writing projects, but could benefit from group exercises and discussions, as well as reading one's work out loud in a supportive, friendly environment. Homework will be given. Elements of writing, such as word use and punctuation, will be in play--and so will the process of finding a voice and a style, then taking the steps to use them.

Ellen Cooney lives in Phippsburg. Her most recent novel, her ninth, is The Mountaintop School for Dogs And Other Second Chances, published in 2015 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Her stories have appeared widely, in The New Yorker and many literary journals. A Massachusetts native, she is the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Massachusetts Artists Foundation. She taught creative writing at Boston College and the Harvard Extension School, and as a writer in residence at MIT. In Maine, she was a visiting writer at the University of Maine/Farmington, and now serves as Consulting Editor for the journal The Maine Review. Her website is http://ellencooney.com/. She blogs at https://ellencooney.tumblr.com/.

Land Conservation in Maine: Local, State Wide and How It Gets Funded

Join our guest speakers for an enlightening look at how land is conserved in Maine. Representing the local land trust level - Angela Twitchell from the Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust, the state wide (and beyond) large land preservation efforts - Bill Patterson from The Nature Conservancy, and what tools are out there for funding these types of efforts – Warren (Whit) Whitney from the Maine Coast Heritage Trust. Learn about how these organizations go about their work, what you can do to help, how you can find out more about these conservation efforts including where to look for information and how you can stand up to ensure future funding programs. From water access to mountain views, we count on these preserved places to enjoy the great outdoors.

We'll be sure to throw in plenty of photos to entice you to visit some of these conserved lands and include some tips on finding that perfect spot you might want to discover.

Potluck dinner will start at 6pm (please bring a dish to share, help us be green and bring your own cup, plates and silverware). Presentation at 7pm.

Confrontation with the Unconscious with Betsy Cook

For many artists, the “what-to-paint-dilemma” is, at best, haunting, and at worst, it threatens to derail our creative pursuits altogether.  Fortunately, I have found answers and inspiration in one of the unlikeliest places—in what Carl Jung calls a “confrontation with the unconscious.”

In letting go of conventional methods of thinking about what to create, my experience has instead led me to surrendering to a process that can best be understood as an excavation of sorts—a diving into the depths that characterize the unconscious.

With my presentation I will discuss my creative approach, using examples from my work to share about my personal “confrontation with the unconscious.”
Materials and inspiration will then be offered up to audience members, encouraging them to have a taste of creating likewise.
