Sewing and weaving today: making a pot holder or bowl cozy with multiple materials, using hand sewing techniques or a a sewing machine (with help). Weaving with multiple materials: yarn, ribbon & string. Feel free to bring scraps for us to use but we will have fabric and felt for the children. We also might upcycle old sweaters and learn how to make mittens and leg warmers out of recycled clothing. If you have some sweaters you no longer want or have accidentally shrunk in the wash, please donate them to us! Thanks, Debra and Debbie

Contemporaries Film Screening - SEED: The Untold Story

ABOUT THE FILM - SEED:  The Untold Story

Few things on Earth are as miraculous and vital as seeds. Worshipped and treasured since the dawn of humankind. SEED: The Untold Story follows passionate seed keepers protecting our 12,000 year-old food legacy. In the last century, 94% of our seed varieties have disappeared. As biotech chemical companies control the majority of our seeds, farmers, scientists, lawyers, and indigenous seed keepers fight a David and Goliath battle to defend the future of our food. In a harrowing and heartening story, these reluctant heroes rekindle a lost connection to our most treasured resource and revive a culture connected to seeds. SEED features Vandana Shiva, Dr. Jane Goodall, Andrew Kimbrell, Winona Laduke and Raj Patel.

A MAINE CONNECTION TO THE FILM

The Scatterseed Project, as featured in the documentary "Seed: The Untold Story", was started by Will Bonsall in Industry, Maine over 40 years ago. His vision was to grow a diverse array of crops in order to protect diversity and connect people with their horticultural heritage. Currently the Scatterseed Project collects, maintains, and distributes thousands of varieties of crop plants, many of them rare or endangered.

Creative Writing Group

A monthly, introductory-level writing group run by an author of novels and stories, for anyone interested in applying their language skills to creative endeavors. While the meetings will be geared to fiction, poets are welcome too--and so are people who've been (perhaps secretly) working on various writing projects, but could benefit from group exercises and discussions, as well as reading one's work out loud in a supportive, friendly environment. Homework will be given. Elements of writing, such as word use and punctuation, will be in play--and so will the process of finding a voice and a style, then taking the steps to use them.

Ellen Cooney lives in Phippsburg. Her most recent novel, her ninth, is The Mountaintop School for Dogs And Other Second Chances, published in 2015 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Her stories have appeared widely, in The New Yorker and many literary journals. A Massachusetts native, she is the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Massachusetts Artists Foundation. She taught creative writing at Boston College and the Harvard Extension School, and as a writer in residence at MIT. In Maine, she was a visiting writer at the University of Maine/Farmington, and now serves as Consulting Editor for the journal The Maine Review. Her website is http://ellencooney.com/. She blogs at https://ellencooney.tumblr.com/.

AMC: Appalachian Odyssey

AMC - Maine Chapter Potluck and Presentation: Appalachian Odyssey: A 28-year hike on America’s trail

Thursday, Feb. 15, Curtis Memorial Library, Morrell Meeting Room, Brunswick

When two new hiking companions went on a day hike of Katahdin in 1985, they had no idea they were starting a 28-year, 2,100-mile adventure. Author, speaker, photographer and avid hiker Jeff Ryan’s book it, Appalachian Odyssey, has delighted readers who enjoy reliving the adventure through a refreshing blend of history, photography and humor.

Born and raised in Maine, Jeff grew up in a family that relished time outdoors and he has certainly carried on that tradition. He has hiked 9,000 miles in the U.S. and is still going strong.

In the past year and a half he has traveled the U.S. in a 1985 VW camper, sharing the story of Appalachian Odyssey in hundreds of venues nationwide. His presentations combine terrific storytelling and 30 years' worth of trail AT photos to create a memorable evening.

Potluck dinner will start at 6pm (please bring a dish to share, help us be green and bring your own cup, plates and silverware). Presentation at 7pm.

Free and open to the public.
