Darby Library Microscopy Club
4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

BIOLOGY: The Study of Living Organisms.

In May of 2017, the Darby Free Library was one of only 76 libraries in America to be awarded the prestigious, NASA@MYLIBRARY Grant. Its purpose is to teach the disciplines of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math.) to our patrons.

As part of our grant, we initiated a Microscopy Laboratory to introduce and to investigate the vast field of biology and its many sub disciplines, like medicine, botany, and zoology, to our students and patrons.

Nothing beats "Hands On Experimenting and Learning." There is absolutely no substitute for observing scientific specimens live through the eyepiece of a microscope. It is far superior to looking at a dry picture in a textbook. The students are much more interested and learn more.

Our students are having so much fun that they don't even realize that they are learning. Our students can't wait to get their hands on the microscopes and view biologic specimens, and to go outside into our yard and pick their own specimens to observe. We teach them the fundamentals of the Life Sciences, across biologic spectrum, and the science of light microscopy; that is, how to properly setup and use a light microscope.

Some students have already evinced an interest in becoming medical researchers and physicians.

All are welcome to attend our exciting sessions, students and interested adults.

Read-Ercise with Toddlers Encore
11:30 AM - 12:15 PM

Read-Ercise w/ Toddlers

ENCORE PRESENTATION! Since this story time at 10:30am is so popular, Mr. Jason will be doing a second encore story time immediately after the first one. This way, the crowd won't be so big. So feel free to come to the 10:30am or the 11:30am story time for your toddlers!

In this Toddler story time, kids act out the books as they are being read, making them feel part of the story!  Stories, songs, fingerplays, rhymes, and toys help toddlers learn and love to read!

Tuesdays at 11:30am. Registration is NOT required.

(Children learn best through role modeling. Caregivers are asked to be great role models and be attentive and engaged in the story time. Side conversations can take place during free play. Thanks!)

PAWS for Reading

Saturday, June 2nd @ 2pm

CLICK HERE TO RESERVE YOUR SPOT(S)!

"PAWS for Reading is a program that allows children to read aloud to a therapy dog (or cat, or bunny!) in order to improve reading and communication skills. Children read individually to trained therapy pets (and their handlers) in schools, libraries, or other settings where they can feel comfortable and confident — and have fun! After all, a dog will not correct them or make them feel awkward if they stumble."

MFL is a participating library in PAWS for Reading program! We have enough spaces per visit for 12 kids/readers. We recommend ages 5+ (or any one who can read aloud).

Readers are limited to 10 minutes of reading aloud to a pet, but can read on their own or color while waiting. Register to reserve a spot for your young reader using his/her name.

Beacon Theatre Productions presents a one act play, The Red Letter Locker. In the play, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is transported to 2018 in a time machine built by his friend, H.G. Wells. Doyle meets a high school student, who’s been wrongfully accused of a crime, and helps her clear her name using Sherlockian deduction. Together, they interact with 4 other characters played by one actor. The Red Letter Locker was written by Randy Petersen. The playwright calls it  "a light, fun play that follows one character—high school student, Mia—on a path of self-discovery, with the help of a time-traveling author." Together they're solving a mystery, but Mia is also learning how to interact with her world."

Beacon Theatre Productions presented the highly successfuly one act play on Mary Todd Lincoln at Ridley Library in 2016.

PAWS for Reading

Wednesday, June 6th @ 6:30pm

PAWS for Reading
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Children can come to the library and practice reading to the best listener - a dog! Three therapy dog teams will be at the Swarthmore Public Library to meet with beginning and reluctant readers and to listen to children (Kindergartners and older) read a book of their choice. This is also an ideal opportunity for English language learners.

This very popular program is held two Thursdays each month. Registration required. Each child will get a time slot within the 6:30-7:30 window. Email Mr. Scott at swcsd@delcolibraries.org to request a specific time.

Tuesday, June 12 at 2pm

Agnès Varda and JR have things in common: a passion for and the exploration of images in general, and more precisely, for places and for ways of showing, sharing, and exhibiting them. Agnès chose cinema. JR chose to create open air photography galleries. When Agnès and JR met in 2015, they immediately wanted to work together, to shoot a film in France, far from cities, during a trip in JR's photographic (and magical) truck.
