Darby Library Microscopy Club

   BIOLOGY: The Study of Living Organisms.      

In May of 2017, the Darby Free Library was one of only 76 libraries in America to be awarded the prestigious, NASA@MYLIBRARY Grant. Its purpose is to teach the disciplines of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math.) to our patrons.

As part of our grant, we initiated a Microscopy Laboratory to introduce and to investigate the vast field of biology and its many sub disciplines, like medicine, botany, and zoology, to our students and patrons.

Nothing beats "Hands On Experimenting and Learning." There is absolutely no substitute for observing scientific specimens live through the eyepiece of a microscope. It is far superior to looking at a dry picture in a textbook. The students are much more interested and learn more.

Our students are having so much fun that they don't even realize that they are learning. Our students can't wait to get their hands on the microscopes and view biologic specimens, and to go outside into our yard and pick their own specimens to observe. We teach them the fundamentals of the Life Sciences, across biologic spectrum, and the science of light microscopy; that is, how to properly setup and use a light microscope. 

Some students have already evinced an interest in becoming medical researchers and physicians.

All are welcome to attend our exciting sessions, students and interested adults.

Remember: Adults are great role models who can demonstrate great listening for their kids. Please keep conversations to a minimum or feel free to chat in the hallway while Mr. Jason immerses the kids in a language-rich environment.

MEDIGAP BASICS

This presentation will cover the fundamental information about Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap) including terminology, selection, cost, and how the APPRISE Program can assist the Medicare beneficiary select these plans. This presentation is for consumers who would like to save money concerning the 20% of the cost that Medicare (medical expense – copays, coinsurances, and deductibles) does not cover. It will be relevant for current Medicare beneficiaries with Original Medicare and/or new Medicare beneficiaries who would like assistance with paying for Part B premiums, copays, and deductibles not paid by Original Medicare.

The speaker will be an APPRISE Program Counselor who is specially trained by the PA Department of Aging to provide free, unbiased Medicare and Medicaid Health Insurance information.

An Evening with Kermit Roosevelt

Kermit Roosevelt III, great-great-grandson of President Theodore Roosevelt, presents his new novel, Allegiance.  Allegiance plunges the reader into the political debate surrounding the imprisonment of thousands of innocent Americans during WWII.
Roosevelt is a Professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Pennsylvania, a former clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justice David Souter, and an award-winning author of fiction and non-fiction.  Books will be available for purchase. Seating is limited and registration is required.

Geared to the physical level of development of the youngest babies, the primary focus in this program is a secure setting for infants who are not yet walking. OPERA LECTURE - THE ABDUCTION FROM THE SERAGLIO, PART 2

Join other music lovers to learn about Mozart's comedic opera, The Abduction from the Seraglio (Harem). It's filled with fun and great singing! Popular lecturer Joseph Erdeljac, B.S. and M.Ed., Music and Vocal Performance, will discuss the opera. During the course of the two-part lecture series, attendees will also listen to the entire recording while following along with a provided libretto.  

The program will be held in the 2nd floor meeting room. There is no elevator.

Light refreshments will be provided.

It's a story time with lots of movement and ocassional input from the audience! Mr. Jason leads this story time for preschoolers with books, songs, dancing, and a magnetic board during free-play where the kids can use magnetic pieces to tell their own stories.

Registration is not required, but participation is!

Remember: Adults are great role models who can demonstrate great listening for their kids. Please keep conversations to a minimum or feel free to chat in the hallway while Mr. Jason immerses the kids in a language-rich environment.
