I Spy a Book in the Window Challenge (All Ages)

  needpix.com

All ages are invited to join us this summer as we kick off our summer reading clubs on June 22 with our "I Spy a Book in the Window" city-wide campaign!  Participation is simple, all you need to do is place a homemade paper  "book cover" in a window at your house or apartment that is visible from the street or sidewalk for others to "spy".  By incorporating bright, vivid colors and bolder text your masterpiece will certainly catch someone`s eye.  Be creative and have fun!

Each family member can create their own cover, perhaps of their favorite fairy tale or something they are currently reading.  Swap them out through the summer posting new covers every few weeks making it a family project...the possibilities are endless!

Whether you are taking a stroll or riding a bike around your neighborhood or driving through Derby see how many book covers you can "spy" this summer!

Remember to social distance when going out and wear your mask.

Why Did We Need the Constitution - a virtual lecture by Professor Hamish Lutris

Via Zoom link:  By 1787, the US government, which had been conceived in a spirit of extreme economic and social liberty, was failing. States were arguing with each other, money was scarce, and banks seemed to be favoring wealthy east-coast economic elites, while oppressing those struggling to expand the country’s borders on the western frontier. With Sahays’ Rebellion in the winter of 1786-87, the fragility of the government finally gave way to a general cry for some solution to the problem. This presentation details the background of the Constitution, as well as discussing the document itself, which has served the country for over 200 years, despite being written quickly and in secret.

Registration is required for this program online at www.derbypubliclibrary.org and will be conducted through Zoom. To download Zoom, visit your app store or download from Zoom.us to register for a free account.

Note: Prior to the event, you will receive a reminder email with the Zoom meeting details and link.

Hamish Lutris is an Associate Professor of History, Political Science, and Geography at Capital Community College in Hartford, Connecticut. He has worked in some of America’s premier natural and historical sites, leading hiking and historical programs. He has also lectured extensively in the United States, Europe, and Canada, presenting programs on wide-ranging historical topics, including Native American history, the Civil War, Scientific History, Social and Cultural history, World War I, World War II, and the American West.
