Derby Public Library's Annual Scholarship Prize

Tuesday February 14, 2023 - Friday March 31, 2023

Staff members have selected some of their favorite books, which are available for check out and are located in a special display on the main level of the library.  The books have been lovingly wrapped, so it will be a mystery title hidden inside when you choose one.  This is a fun way to explore new authors and genres by checking out a book concealed in wrapping.

Go on a mystery date with a book and perhaps it will be love at first sight! If you don’t enjoy it, no hurt feelings: just dump it (in the book drop!)

Come visit the library’s display throughout March on the Main Level and find your perfect match!

Each book will have a “rate your date” card that you can fill out once you are done reading. Just place the completed card back inside the book when you return it in the book drop (open 24/7).

To find out more or to request a Mystery Date Book please call the library at 203-736-1482 or email the library at dplreference@biblio.org.

Author Talk with local author Deborah Levison

Deborah Levison's life has two parts: the first in Canada, where she attended University of Toronto and the Royal Conservatory of Music, and the second in Connecticut, where she lives with three children, two doodles, and one husband. Her nonfiction true crime story, THE CRATE, explores family intrigue and a real life murder mystery. Reviewers have called it “gorgeous and poetic,” “heart-wrenching,” and “a brilliant story” and has won seven literary awards.

Levison’s debut fiction novel, A NEST OF SNAKES, is part thriller, part courtroom drama based on real-life abuse at elite New England private schools. Reviewers call it “a roller-coaster ride of surprising twists” leading to a “staggering climax and an absolutely perfect ending.” Monster Librarian hails A NEST OF SNAKES as one of the fall’s most talked-about novels.

Join us as Deborah talks about writing these personal stories filled with mysteries, thrills and surprises and how the process helped her connect to her own family in a deeper way.

Registration is requested.  To sign up or to obtain further information, feel free to contact us at 203-736-1482

Special Book Discussion

Derby High School graduate, Nicole Rizzo, will be here to discuss her book, Running on Thin Ice.

At ten years old, Nicole Rizzo discovered cross country running. The sport was a gift - with it came chaotic runs fueled by Bugles, an eccentric coach, and hilarious teammates.  Before long, the laughter faded, and everything shifted. She slipped into a battle with overexercising, undereating, and perfectionism.  Forced to heal if she wanted to live fully, she uprooted the destructive habits of her past and unearthed what it really means to be strong.

Running on Thin Ice traces a journey of past selves and captures those painful, unsettling, and beautiful moments that show it’s possible to grab hold of solid ground and escape the frigid water just in time.

Registration is requested. To sign up or to obtain further information, feel free to contact us at 203-736-1482. Drop-ins are also welcome

Multiple copies of the book will be available at the circulation desk.
