REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED; if bringing more than one (1) child, please register each individually.  Also, since each separate weekly story time after this is a series, you are automatically registered for each successive session when you register.  The Derby Public Library invites preschoolers ages 3-5 to a weekly Friday morning program through December 7th.  S.T.E.A.M. Ahead is a blend of story time and hands-on activities that lend to exploring the world of science, technology, engineering, art, and math at a preschool level.  Discovery through interactive experiments will lead participants to a basic understanding of such topics as how plants grow, weather, math, science, using shapes, and more.  Children will attend this story time on their own while a caregiver remains in the Children’s Room.

EVENT NOTE: Please be aware that this program is NOT the same as the STEAM/STEM program that we also have as this is a story time that incorporates STEAM/STEM programming.  Our regular STEAM/STEM program for ages 4-11 is offered throughout the year for anyone interested in that program.

Author Talk with Eric Lehman

Join Eric for a lively lecture about the remarkable story of "Connecticut Town Greens: History of the State's Common Centers".   Eric D. Lehman is the director of creative writing at the University of Bridgeport and has stories, reviews, and essays in dozens of magazines and journals. His dozen books include “Connecticut Town Greens”, “A History of Connecticut Food”, the “Insiders’ Guide to Connecticut”, and “Becoming Tom Thumb”, which won the annual award from the Victorian Society of America. and was chosen as one of the top university press books of the year by the American Library Association. His novel “Shadows of Paris” won two independent book awards and was a finalist for the Connecticut Book Award.

Space is limited so registration is required beginning October 22 online or by calling the Reference Desk at 203-736-1482.

November/December Lunchtime Book Discussion

The November/December featured book will be A Redbird Christmas by Fannie Flagg.

From the beloved author of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe comes her latest New York Times bestseller--a Yuletide classic about small-town America and larger-than-life wonders. With the same incomparable style and warm inviting voice that have made her beloved by millions of readers far and wide, author Fannie Flagg has written an enchanting Christmas story of faith and hope for all ages that is sure to become a classic.

Deep in the southernmost part of Alabama, lies the sleepy little community known as Lost River, a place that time itself seems to have forgotten. After a startling diagnosis from his doctor, Oswald T. Campbell leaves behind the cold and damp weather of the oncoming Chicago winter to spend what he believes will be his last Christmas in the warm and welcoming town of Lost River.

There he meets the postman who delivers mail by boat, the store owner who nurses a broken heart, the ladies of the Mystic Order of the Royal Polka Dots Secret Society, who do clandestine good works. And he meets a little redbird named Jack, who is at the center of this tale of a magical Christmas when something so amazing happened that those who witnessed it have never forgotten it.

Lunchtime Book Discussions are held the last Wednesday of the month and are free and open to the public. Multiple copies of the book will be available at the circulations desk.  Drop-ins are welcome—no registration required.  For further information contact the Reference Desk at 203-736-1482.

Holiday Concert: Bob Hennessy and the World of Harmonica

The harmonica is a worldwide instrument voicing the music of hundreds of cultures. And one simple reason could be its SIZE. What has intrigued many in the music community is its ability, when played by masters, to encompass all genres of musical style, from Classical to Jazz to Near Eastern to Irish to Blues to Country, etc. Using storytelling, historical facts and playing the instrument in many styles, Bob Hennessy tells the story of "The World of Harmonica".

Seating is limited, so registration is required starting November 9, online or at the Reference Desk at 203-736-1482.
