Cookbook Club
6:30 PM

Taste of History

The Dighton Public Library has started a Cookbook Club. The next meeting is Wednesday, October 18 at 6:30 PM. The deadline for sign-ups is Wednesday, October 11.  We will be celebrating our local cooks by preparing and sharing a dish from A Taste of History, The Dighton Historical Society's Cookbook. The cookbook is available at the library.

This group meets once a month, with a different theme each month. Participants must sign up with the library in advance to let us know what type of dish you will be preparing (so we won’t have duplicates.) We will notify you of how many servings to bring for the group meeting. The servings are meant to be a taste – not full sized. And we ask that you bring copies of your recipes to share with the group.

Afternoon Book Discussion
4:00 PM

The Afternoon Book Discussion Group of the Dighton Public Library is discussing Bel Canto by Ann Patchett.

From Booklist: Readers curious about the emotional flow between hostages and their takers should cotton to this novel based on the 1996 Tupac Amaru takeover of the Japanese ambassadorial residence in Lima, Peru. It traces the hostages’ adjusting attitudes during the torpor of a months-long siege. Relief from their tedium takes the form of luscious world-class soprano Roxane Coss, who had been entertaining an international assortment of diplomats and businesspersons when the terrorists took the Peruvian vice president’s house. Everybody loves her, eventually--a Russian diplomat, the Japanese tycoon who paid for her performance, one of the teenage hostage-takers, and so on. The medium for all professions of admiration and love is polylingual Gen Watanabe. As Watanabe flits from conversation to conversation, Patchett develops the characters’ thoughts. Watanabe, for example, takes a shine to a child-soldier terrorist, Carmen, who comes to share the fate of an operatic earlier bearer of her name. Unhurriedly, even languorously, Patchett brings readers into the minds of the characters. (Reviewed June 1, 2001) -- Gilbert Taylorbel canto

All are invited to join the discussion. This book group usually meets on the last Thursday of each month at 4:00. Copies of the book are available, in advance, at the library.

Murder, Manslaughter and Mayhem on the South Coast
7:00 PM

Local author John "Red" Cummings is the next writer to join us in our author series to discuss his latest book: Murder, Manslaughter and Mayhem on the Southcoast. Murder manslaughter mayhemAuthor John Cummings

From the publisher: "The murderers in these pages used guns, knives, axes, fists, fire, rope, and other tools—including their hands—to commit their dastardly deeds. Mothers killed their children, husbands and wives killed each other, and children murdered their parents. Police officers were killed in cold blood while doing their jobs. Deaths occurred in physicians’ offices during abortions, and some victims were cut into pieces.

Murders were committed in the suburbs and the city. Many of the accused were proclaimed insane—others committed suicide after the killing. Either the slayer went to jail, an insane asylum, or did themselves in by their own hand— Murder does not discriminate. Victims and killers come from all races, nationalities, genders, and age groups. Many used drugs or sold drugs. Crimes of passion seemed to outweigh robberies but there were still many of those. Some killers were just “bad” people who did not regret their actions and had no qualms about how they slayed their victims. There were cult murders and unsolved roadside killings of young women believed to be prostitutes. Some of our murderers were released to kill additional innocent victims. Such is Murder, Manslaughter, and Mayhem on the SouthCoast."

Afternoon Book Discussion
4:00 PM

The Afternoon Book Discussion Group of the Dighton Public Library is discussing The Ship of Brides by Jojo Moyes.

From Booklist: World War II has ended, and four Australian women are about to embark on the trip of  a lifetime. They are joined by 650 other women who will make the six-week trip to England aboard the HMS Victoria to be reunited with the men they married just prior to or during the war. These "war brides " are in a perilous position: leaving behind everyone and everything they know to start a new life in a new country, unsure whether they will be welcomed by their new in-laws and able to handle life married to men they barely know. The stress of  these concerns, coupled with life on a battleship full of  seamen, ensures the trip is an adventure for all—especially when secrets are revealed that could ruin reputations and the hint of  forbidden romance blossoms on board. VERDICT Moyes's (Me Before You; The Girl You Left Behind; One Plus One ) engrossing and well-written novel with romantic content is light but powerful. Through emotive language and suspense, the author effectively thrusts readers into the brides ' world of  anxiety, urgency, hope, and excitement. Highly recommended for historical romance readers.— Jennifer Harris, Southern New Hampshire Univ. Lib., Manchester --Jennifer Harris (Reviewed October 1, 2014) (Library Journal, vol 139, issue 16, p75)ship of brides

Afternoon Book Discussion
4:00 PM

The Afternoon Book Discussion Group of the Dighton Public Library is discussing 2 a.m. at the Cat's Pajamas by Marie-Helene Bertino.

From Library Journal: /* Starred Review */ Almost ten years old, Madeleine Altimari is a self-described "poor motherless girl in old stockings." Often hungry but pragmatically compensating for her grieving father's neglect, she's a mouthy old soul who doesn't play nice with others. What Madeleine does do is live and breathe jazz. On Christmas Eve, she is determined, at all costs, to sing at a run-down Philadelphia jazz bar called the Cat's Pajamas. Her teacher Sarina Greene whose love for an old flame is unrequited (or so she thinks) is also drawn to the Cat's Pajamas. Lorca, the bar's owner, has just been informed that his bar will be shut down unless he comes up with an impossible sum of money to cover his countless citations and bring the place up to code. That these threads converge is a given. The surprise is in the purely original construction of an irresistible story that takes place in just 24 hours. VERDICT By the fourth sentence of the first page, readers will fall in love with debut author Bertino; delighted adoration of Madeleine will take another half page. This assured, moving, brilliantly funny tale of music, mourning, and off-kilter romance entrances with its extraordinarily inventive language. Be prepared for a quick reread of this novel to try to answer the question: How did Bertino do that? [See Prepub Alert, 2/3/14.]— Beth Andersen, formerly with Ann Arbor Dist. Lib., MI --Beth Andersen (Reviewed July 1, 2014) (Library Journal, vol 139, issue 12, p70)ship of brides

All are invited to join the discussion. This book group usually meets on the last Thursday of each month at 4:00. Copies of the book are available, in advance, at the library.
