CHILDREN'S BOOK CLUBS - BOLO!

Book Clubs for grades K-3 will begin in September.  Grades 4 & 5 will begin in October. Be on the lookout for our writeups and the opening of registrations.  Our clubs are a lot of fun and include a project and a snack.   (Parents: please advise of any food allergies when you register.)  Children are not necessarily expected to read the books independently.  They can be shared with family to begin a discussion.  All September and October book selections will be short and not require much reading time.

Dracut Reads: Film Viewing of Fast Food Nation

Join us for our first Dracut Reads event, a film viewing of Fast Food Nation

“Fast Food Nation” tells three interlocking stories set in the fast food business: Don Anderson (Greg Kinnear) is an ad exec for Mickey’s fast food chain, sent to investigate a case of contaminated frozen burgers at the Colorado meat-packing factory where illegal Mexican immigrant workers work in less than satisfactory conditions. Two of those workers, Raul and Sylvia (Wilmer Valderrama, Catalina Sandino Moreno), have crossed the border hoping to start a new life together in America but facing the difficult working conditions at the plant. Amber (Ashley Johnson) is a normal high school teen working at a Mickey’s restaurant who wants more from life than to end up like her mother (Patricia Arquette) who also works at a local fast food place."

MPAA Rating: R
Running Time: 1 hour, 56 minutes

Our first book is "My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother" by Patricia Polacco.  She wrote and illustrated this book drawing from her own life as a child.  Siblings often seem to try to compete with each other. Who's the best?  That's what happens here.  When you get the book, first just look at the pictures without reading the words.  What do you learn about the story and the characters without ever reading a word?  Then read the book by youself or with your family.  At our meeting we'll talk about the pictures, the characters, and sibling relationships.  We'll have a special project after that.  There will lso be a special snack.  Can you guess what it will be?  (Parents - please send an e-mail when you register, advising of any food allergies or other issues.)  Copies of this book will soon be available at the front desk.  Check there to see if they have arrived.  Registration will open in a few days.
