Kindergarten Book Club

Come to Kindergarten Book Club! We read a book, enjoy a snack and make a project based on our book of the month.

October's book is Green Eggs and Ham by Dr Suess. We will be doing some taste testing as part of our Dracut Reads and Eats program - come ready to be brave and try new things!

Each child is invited to bring a favorite food from home to share with everyone. What new foods will we discover we love??

Kindergarteners are NOT expected to read the book by themselves, so read it together at home and come in ready to chat.
What did you like? What didn't you like? What was the funniest part?
Copies of the book will be available at the front desk.
Please notify Miss Joan of any allergies well before the event.

Registration is required for this program and will open a few weeks before the event.

New England Pie with Robert Cox (Pie Tasting to follow!)

Pie has been a delectable centerpiece of Yankee tables since Europeans first landed on New England's shores in the seventeenth century. With a satisfying variety of savory and sweet, author Robert Cox takes a bite out of the history of pie and pie-making in the region. From the crackling topmost crust to the bottom layer, explore the origin and evolution of popular ingredients like the Revolutionary roots of the Boston cream. One month at a time, celebrate the seasonal fixings that fill New Englanders' favorite dessert from apple and cherry to pumpkin and squash. This mouthwatering history of New England pies offers something for every appetite. Come sample some of our favorites!

A DRACUT READS PROGRAM!    Sponsored by The Friends of The Dracut Library.

There will be a PIE TASTING after the presentation!

Plants of Magic, Plants of Life: Halloween and Thanksgiving

Autumn brings two holidays we all look forward to, Halloween and Thanksgiving. While there seems to be little to connect the two days, they actually share the same ancient history. Both celebrations once marked the harvest and the end of the growing season. Plants, especially herbs, have always played a big role in the observance of both holidays. Halloweens’ herbs are full of magic and mystery; Thanksgivings’ plants are associated with sustaining life. Learn the plants , their historical uses and how to use them creatively and decoratively in your own celebrations.

Join Betsy Williams as we explore these fascinating plants, just in time for the holidays!

A DRACUT READS PROGRAM!     Sponsored by The Friends of The Dracut Library.

bw-headshotBetsy Williams teaches, lectures and writes about living with herbs and flowers.

A life long gardener, herb grower and cook, Betsy trained as a florist in Boston and England.

Book Discussion: Garlic & Sapphires by Ruth Reichl

Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise by Ruth Reichl

Ruth Reichl’s bestselling memoir of her time as an undercover restaurant critic for The New York Times

Ruth Reichl, world-renowned food critic and former editor in chief of Gourmet magazine, knows a thing or two about food. She also knows that as the most important food critic in the country, you need to be anonymous when reviewing some of the most high-profile establishments in the biggest restaurant town in the world—a charge she took very seriously, taking on the guise of a series of eccentric personalities. In Garlic and Sapphires, Reichl reveals the comic absurdity, artifice, and excellence to be found in the sumptuously appointed stages of the epicurean world and gives us—along with some of her favorite recipes and reviews—her remarkable reflections on how one’s outer appearance can influence one’s inner character, expectations, and appetites, not to mention the quality of service one receives.

Join us for the second of our discussion groups exploring one of the four books featured in our DRACUT READS and EATS! celebration of our Community Farming Heritage!  Copies of all four books are available in our lobby, or ask at our Main Desk.

Book Discussion: The Dirty Life

The Dirty Life: A Memoir of Farming, Food, and Love by Kristin Kimball

Single, thirtysomething, working as a writer in New York City, Kristin Kimball was living life as an adventure. But she was beginning to feel a sense of longing for a family and for home. When she interviewed a dynamic young farmer, her world changed. Kristin knew nothing about growing vegetables, let alone raising pigs and cattle and driving horses. But on an impulse, smitten, if not yet in love, she shed her city self and moved to five hundred acres near Lake Champlain to start a new farm with him. The Dirty Life is the captivating chronicle of their first year on Essex Farm, from the cold North Country winter through the following harvest season—complete with their wedding in the loft of the barn.

Join us for the third of our discussion groups exploring one of the four books featured in our DRACUT READS and EATS! celebration of our Community Farming Heritage!  Copies of all four books are available in our lobby, or ask at our Main Desk.

Book Discussion: My American Dream

My American Dream: A Life of Love, Family, and Food by Lidia Matticchio Bastianich

Lidia's story begins with her upbringing in Pula, a formerly Italian city turned Yugoslavian under Tito's communist regime. She enjoys a childhood surrounded by love and security--despite the family's poverty--learning everything about Italian cooking from her beloved grandmother, Nonna Rosa. When the communist regime begins investigating the family, they flee to Trieste, Italy, where they spend two years in a refugee camp waiting for visas to enter the United States--an experience that will shape Lidia for the rest of her life. At age 12, Lidia starts a new life in New York. She soon begins working in restaurants as a young teenager, the first step toward the creation of her own American dream.

Join us for the last of our discussion groups exploring one of the four books featured in our DRACUT READS and EATS! celebration of our Community Farming Heritage!  Copies of all four books are available in our lobby, or ask at our Main Desk.

Dracut Reads Event: Massachusetts Cranberry Culture with Robert Cox

New Englanders know that cranberries are not for holidays alone. For centuries, this tart fruit has reigned over the cranberry heartland of Barnstable and Plymouth Counties, Massachusetts. Dozens of recipes that utilize the “humble fruit” have risen up over the years, the most popular being cranberry sauce, which one imaginative New Englander paired with lobster. The popularity of the berry exploded in the 1840s, and despite occasional setbacks such as the great pesticide scare of 1959, demand continues to rise to this day. Author Robert S. Cox traces the evolution of cranberry culture in the Bay State, exploring the delectable history of this quintessential New England industry.

A Sampling of yummy cranberry treats will be served.
