Author Event - Dina Vargo

Author Event and Book Signing!

Join Author and Historian, Dina Vargo as she brings historical figures to life recounting stories of the "wild" women that made Boston what it is today and shares the "hidden history" of  the city!  There will be time for Q&A after the program.  A limited number of Books will be available for sale.

"The sons of liberty are celebrated in the rebellious history of Boston--but what of their sisters? An audacious and determined procession of reformers, socialites, criminals and madams made the city what it is today. One hundred years before Rosa Parks, African American abolitionist Sarah Parker Remond refused to give up her seat while attending a play in Boston. Fiery activists Harriet Hemenway and Minna Hall led a boycott against bird plumage in ladies' dress and brought the fashion industry to its knees. Rachel Wall was the last woman to be hanged in Massachusetts after leading a daring life as a robber and pirate. Later, women like Boston Marathon runner Kathrine Switzer also blazed their own trails. Author Dina Vargo unearths the remarkable stories of the wild women of the Hub".  Wild Women of Boston: Mettle and Moxie in the Hub

"Boston is one of America's most historic cities, but it has quite a bit of unseen past. Riotous mobs celebrated their hatred of the pope in an annual celebration called Pope's Night during the colonial era. A centuries-long turf war played out on the streets of quiet Chinatown, ending in the massacre of five men in a back alley in 1991. William Monroe Trotter published the Boston Guardian, an independent African American newspaper, and was a beacon of civil rights activism at the turn of the century. Author and historian Dina Vargo shines a light into the cobwebbed corners of Boston's hidden history."  Hidden History of Boston

Deadly Pleasures is a Mystery Book Group that meets on the third Tuesday of the month from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM in the Fireplace Room.  Books to be discussed are available for check-out aproximately one month prior to each meeting, at the Circulation Desk. New members are always welcome.  Join us this evening for a discussion of Garden of Lamentations by Deborah Crombie.

"Scotland Yard detectives Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James are drawn into separate investigations that hold disturbing—and deadly—complications for their own lives in this powerful mystery in the bestselling series.

On a beautiful morning in mid-May, the body of a young woman is found in one of Notting Hill’s private gardens. To passersby, the pretty girl in the white dress looks as if she’s sleeping. But Reagan Keating has been murdered, and the lead detective, DI Kerry Boatman, turns to Gemma James for help."

Delvena Theater Company Presents: The Dickens You Say!

Back by Popular Demand just in time for the Christmas Holidays! Join us for  Interactive Theater with The Delvena Theater Company and their production of:

 The Dickens You Say!

Charles Dickens wrote some of the most powerful, imaginative and adored novels of all time. Using lots of humor, the actors will take the audience on a journey into the life and loves of the great man. Through the use of monologues and scenes, the actors embody the ridiculous, romantic and frightening characters that Mr. Dickens so richly created. They will also explore with the audience some of Mr. Dickens romantic adventures, and how he loved with every "chink and crevice" of his being. There's a bit of scandal, and a whole lot of worship for the great man who loved Boston profoundly. The cast will open up after the show for a lively discussion regarding Charles Dickens.  Registration Opens November 15th.

The Delvena Theatre Company was founded in 1992 and has performed at various venues, most often at the Boston Center for the Arts.  The company was nominated for five Independent Reviewers of New England awards.  Its production of 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?' was on Theatre Mirror's Best List for acting, directing and production.  Presentations of 'Anna Weiss' and 'Beyond Therapy' were included on Theatre Mirror's best play list and 'Blue Heart' was placed on Aisle Say's best list.

Deadly Pleasures Mystery Book Group

Deadly Pleasures is a Mystery Book Group that meets on the third Tuesday of the month from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM in the Fireplace Room.  Books to be discussed are available for check-out aproximately one month prior to each meeting, at the Circulation Desk. New members are always welcome.  Join us this evening for a discussion of Early Remains by Donna Leon.

"During an interrogation, Brunetti acts rashly, doing something he quickly comes to regret, and in the fallout, he realizes that he needs a break. Granted leave from the Questura, Brunetti's wife Paola ships him off to a villa owned by a wealthy relative on Sant'Erasmo, one of the largest islands in the laguna. There he intends to pass his days rowing, and his nights reading Pliny's Natural History. The recuperative stay goes according to plan until David Casati, the caretaker of the house, goes missing following a sudden storm."

Wednesday Afternoon Book Group

Join our new Afternoon Book Group for a lively discussion.  We meet on the last Wednesday of each month from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm in the Fireplace Room.  Copies of the title to be discussed are available one month prior to each discussion. Ask for the Afternoon Book Group choice at the front Circulation Desk.

This month, we will discuss The Boston Girl by Anita Diamant.

SUMMARY: Addie Baum was born in 1900 to immigrant parents who were unprepared for and suspicious of America.  Growing up in Boston, Addie's intelligence and curiosity take her to a world her parents can't imagine: a world of short skirts and new opportunities for women.  From the one-room apartment she shared with her family, to the library group for girls she joins, to her first, disastrous love affair, Addie recalls her adventures with compassion for the naive girl she was and a wicked sense of humor.

Join us for our adult writer's workshop! We will meet on the first Wednesday of the month from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Each session will consist of some conversation, followed by a period of reading and critiquing.  We end the session with a 20 minute writing exercise.  Members will be given an assignment to work on prior to the following meeting.  Everyone is responsible for emailing their completed assignment to the whole group.  New members are always welcome.  Please register online in order to have your name and email address added to the list.

For the first time in two years we have openings available for new members in The Parker Writers Group!  If you are interested in joining us, please register below.  The assignment for the October meeting will be emailed to you.

This month, we will discuss Before You Know Kindness by Chris Bohjalian

SUMMARY: On a balmy night in New Hampshire a shot rings out in a garden, and a man falls to the ground, terribly wounded.  The wounded man is Spencer McCullough, the shot that hit him was fired (accidentally?) by his adolescent daughter Charlotte.  It's a family saga that is timely in its examination of some of the most important issues of our era, and timeless in its exploration of the strange and unexpected places where we find love.
