Hoopla Book Club Discussion

Calling all book lovers! Join us for a lively discussion around a book of literary fictions. Our next meeting is Tuesday November 17 at 7:00 pm. We will be reading A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving.

A PBS Great American Read Top 100 Pick
I am doomed to remember a boy with a wrecked voice-not because of his voice, or because he was the smallest person I ever knew, or even because he was the instrument of my mother's death, but because he is the reason I believe in God; I am a Christian because of Owen Meany.
In the summer of 1953, two eleven-year-old boys-best friends-are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary.

You can download a copy of the ebook here with your Durham Library card. This book discussion is open to all and registration is required. You will receive a link to the zoom meeting prior to the discussion.

Women's Suffrage in CT with the Connecticut Historical Society

How did the women of CT work for – or against – the right to vote? In this program, we’ll look at photos, letters and pamphlets from our collection to understand one of the most hard-fought political battles of American history. You’ll learn about suffragists like Katharine Houghton Hepburn, Mary Townsend Seymour, and Isabella Beecher Hooker, as well as some CT women who fought tooth-and-nail against women getting the vote (what was up with them?).

This program will take place over Zoom and requires registration. A link will be sent to participants prior to the program.
