German Expressionism and Film of the 1920’s with Keith Crocker

German Expressionism and Film of the 1920’s: Captured in Chiaroscuro with Keith Crocker

Tuesday, January 26 at 12:30pm

German Expressionism was the most important artistic movement of the 1920s. Initially an art movement that emphasized the artist's inner feelings or ideas over replicating reality, and was characterized by simplified shapes, bright colors and gestural marks or brushstrokes. This movement applied it’s aesthetics to cinema and gave us some of the greatest motion pictures to emerge from Europe, films whose sense of style has yet to be replicated in these days of computer generated images. Come and find out just how expressionism started and worked its way into motion pictures. Find out the behind the scenes stories to such classics as The Golem (1920) Nosferatu (1922) Metropolis (1926) and so many more. Learn about the directors such as Fritz Lange, F.W. Murnau, Paul Wegener and many more. And last but far from least, find out how German expressionism directly affected the films of the United States, from the horror films of the 1930s to the Film Noir of the 1940’s. This is the definitive program on this subject. Don’t miss it!

Registration is required. A Link will be emailed to you before the program begins. Registration ends one hour before program begins.

ADULT LECTURE: The Black America Show of the 1890’s with David Fiske

CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH

The Black America Show of the 1890’s with David Fiske

Thursday, February 4 at 12:30pm

The Black America Show was presented in Brooklyn and several other cities in the 1890s. Showman Nate Salsbury developed the show, which he said would "show the people of the North the better side of the colored man and woman of the South."  The show featured a large cast of African Americans, that included singers and dancers as well as artisans and performers who demonstrated their various skills and talents. In addition to the staged performances, Black America featured a reproduction of a Southern plantation, which the public could visit and have a chance to interact with the various artisans. The show was intended, not just to entertain, but also to educate the public on aspects of Black culture. In addition, Black America provided an opportunity for many African Americans to get a start in show business. In fact, the show was managed by Billy McClain, a African American performer and promoter, who viewed it as a training ground for up-and-coming talented Blacks. Registration is required. A link will be emailed to you before the program. Registration ends one hour before program begins.
