LECTURE: Screwball Comedy between 1934 and 1942

With Phil Harwood

Sunday, September 26, 2021 at 2pm

Take a journey of laughter through this period of filmmaking.

Fast paced dialogue, battle of the sexes, clash of classes, mistaken identity, runaway brides-these were the elements of screwball comedy: between 1934 and 1942 (and after), directors like Frank Capra, Howard Hawks, Preston Sturges, and others, had audiences convulsing in laughter. Registration for Elmont Library cardholders begins two weeks before program. Registration for non-cardholders begins one week before program. Masks are required for all IN-PERSON programs, regardless of vaccination status.

ADULT VIRTUAL LECTURE: Early Rock and Roll Ballads with Richard Knox

LECTURE: Early Rock and Roll Ballads with Richard Knox

VIRTUAL PROGRAM

Wednesday, September 29 at 12:30pm

While the first decade of the Rock ‘n Roll Era was dominated by up-tempo hits by such artists as Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, and the Four Seasons, several other great vocalists were also famous for singing and arranging both original and “cover” versions of classic ballads that have endured over the half-century since they were first recorded. Groups such as The Platters and the Everly Brothers, as well as solo performers such as Ben E. King, Johnny Mathis, Roy Orbison, and Bobby Vinton were responsible for a large percentage of record sales and then became a staple on television programs such as "American Bandstand" and the "Ed Sullivan Show." This nostalgic program will revisit many of these classic numbers as they were performed in live concerts or on television. Registration is required. Registration ends one hour before class begins. Link will be emailed to you before program begins.

LECTURE: The 1964- 1965 World’s Fair with Arthur Zuckerman

Friday, October 15, 2021 at 12:30pm

The 1964-65 World’s Fair held in Flushing Meadow, Queens was the brainchild of Robert Moses, but was also the testing ground of ideas for Walt Disney to use in Disneyland and in his newest planned creation, Disney World.  The fair was the place where countries, states and industries came together on one site to show off the best things they had to offer.  The exhibits ranged from a ride into the future, to a look back at our past, to a boat ride around the world led by children.  It was a place where you could view Michaelangelo’s Pieta and a scale model miniature of New York City, and then sample foods from all over the nation and the world.  Through narration, pictures, audio and video, this presentation will bring you back to that time to enjoy memories or to create new ones. Registration for Elmont Library cardholders begins October 1.
