INDEPENDENT FILM: THE SEARCH FOR GENERAL TSO
THE SEARCH FOR GENERAL TSO
Monday, December 17 at 7 p.m.

A Becoming American Series Film
Discussion with Michael D’Innocenzo
As much an immigration history as a culinary detective story, this ebullient documentary uses the ubiquitous Americanized dish, General Tso’s chicken, as a lens onto a larger story of immigration, adaptation and innovation to American popular culture. Early on, the film poses the question, “If Chinese Americans comprise only 1% of the U.S. population, why are there Chinese restaurants in almost every city across America?”  The filmmakers seek the answer in a journey through the Chinese American experience, from the Gold Rush and the building of the railroads, to the age of Panda Express.
Rating: Not Rated   Running Time: 1 hr. 11 min.

MEET THE AUTHOR: The Revolution of ’28 by Robert Chiles

MEET THE AUTHOR PROGRAM:
The Revolution of ’28:
Al Smith, American Progressivism, and
the Coming of the New Deal
by Robert Chiles

Tuesday, December 18 at 1 p.m.

This relevant program explores the career of New York governor and 1928 Democratic presidential nominee Alfred E. Smith. Robert Chiles peers into Smith’s work, and uncovers a distinctive strain of progressivism that resonated among urban, ethnic, working-class Americans in the early twentieth century. The book charts the rise of that progressivism during Smith’s years as a state legislator, Governor of NY, and to his 1928 presidential campaign. The new-stock voters responded enthusiastically to Smith’s candidacy on both economic and cultural levels. Robert Chiles will have books available for purchase.
