Portland Gale on Cape Cod

On Thanksgiving Weekend of 1898, the S.S. Portland, known as the "Titanic of New England," disappeared off the coast of Cape Cod during a raging blizzard, claiming 192 lives. Learn about this historic event, forever known as the "Portland Gale," which also caused dozens of shipwrecks in a 24-hour period, and bodies and debris washing ashore on Cape Cod's Outer Beach for weeks, making it the worst storm and life loss in the annals of Massachusetts and Cape Cod’s long maritime history.

Cape Cod storyteller Don Wilding is an award-winning writer and editor for Massachusetts newspapers for 35 years, Don pens the popular “Shore Lore” history column for the Cape Codder newspaper of Orleans, and is the author of three books, Henry Beston’s Cape Cod: How ‘The Outermost House’ Inspired a National Seashore, A Brief History of Eastham: On the Outer Beach of Cape Cod, and the upcoming Shipwrecks of Cape Cod: Stories of Triumph & Tragedy

His songs makes up a significant part of what is known as The Great American Songbook.  Gershwin is an all-time favorite of classical and jazz musicians.  His premature death at 38 deprived the world of one of its great composers.  An EPL 125th anniversary event.
