Barrier Beaches Under Stress

Barrier Beaches Under Stress with Bill Sargent, This talk will look at recent changes to Chatham's North Beach and the North Shore's Plum Island because of sea level rise. Bill Sargent is a NOVA consultant and author of 27 books about science and the environment. He is recipient of the Boston Globe’s Kinship award and wrote the acclaimed book, Crab Wars: A tale of Horseshoe Crabs, Bioterrorism and Human Health and Sea Level Rising: The Chatham Story.  Registration is required for this virtual program

This discussion group is for people who want to talk about outstanding writings in history, literature, philosophy, politics, science, theology, and other disciplines. Great Books discussion groups use an approach to discussion called Shared Inquiry, which follows a few simple guidelines designed to make a discussion more rewarding by keeping the group’s attention focused firmly on the text and its interpretation.  The group will be meeting virtually on the 3rd Tuesday of the month from 3:30-5:00.  For more information and to receive the Zoom link, please contact facilitator Rick Pick at fwchatham@yahoo.com

Rare Book Expert & Antiques Roadshow Appraiser Kenneth Gloss

Kenneth Gloss, proprietor of the internationally known Brattle Book Shop in Boston’s Downtown Crossing section, will give a virtual presentation via Zoom to discuss the value of old and rare books. Ken, who is also a frequent guest appraiser on PBS’ Antiques Roadshow, will also talk about the history of his historic bookshop (www.brattlebookshop.com), which goes back to circa 1825. He is a second-generation owner. Ken will talk about and show some of his favorite finds and describe some of the joys of the "hunt," as well as explain what makes a book go up in value. He has many fascinating anecdotes to share as well as guidelines for what to look for when starting a collection. His talk will be followed by a Q&A session and Ken will give free verbal appraisals of books participants have on hand or will do so at his shop in Boston at a later scheduled date. The Brattle Book Shop is one of America’s oldest and largest antiquarian bookstores. Among the many organizations in which Kenneth Gloss is a member are the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America, the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers, the New England Antiquarian Booksellers of America, the Massachusetts and Rhode Island Antiquarian Booksellers Association, the Committee for the Boston International Antiquarian Book Fair and the Boston Society.
