This month's selection is The Ballroom by Anna Hope.

“Patients in an asylum in 1911 find hope and redemption amid the bleakest circumstances. Though the subject matter is occasionally difficult, a compelling cast of emotionally resonant characters, as well as a bittersweet climax, render Hope’s second novel a powerful, memorable experience.”  (Library Journal)

R.E.A.D. with Dani

Children in grades K - 3 may register to read to Dani, a certified therapy dog, for a 15-minute session!  This program provides an opportunity for beginning and/or struggling readers to practice reading aloud to improve their reading skills.  Animals are ideal reading companions because they listen attentively; do not judge, laugh or criticize; allow children to proceed at their own pace; are less intimidating than peers.

Dani and her handler have been trained in the R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dog) program, which improves children's reading and communication skills.

Each child may bring their own book or choose one at the library before their session.

*Registration is required for a specific timeslot and will begin one month before the program.  If the timeslot you would like is unavailable, please call the library to put your name on a waitlist*

*If your child's grade falls outside of the parameters for this program and there are special circumstances which would make this program beneficial to your child, please call the Children's Services Librarian at 203-452-2850 x 2930.*

The War to End All Wars: WWI in Four Lectures

Part 3: A Terrible Beauty Is Born

October 16th World War One had many effects that went beyond the conventional battlefield. Mexico’s revolution helped bring the United States into the war. Ireland gained its independence as a result of the 1916 rebellion and subsequent unrest in that country. Countries like Australia and South Africa would gain stature as members of the international community for their parts in the war. Russia became the Soviet Union as a result of the Revolution brought on by the war, setting the stage for the Second World War and Cold War. Finally, the Middle East was set on its path toward modern conflict in the First World War. This presentation will focus on the outlying political ramifications of the war, which remain fresh- and often painful- in today’s memory.

Hamish Lutris is an Assistant Professor of History at Capital Community College.

Registration is required.

Sensory Storytime

Ages 3 - 6 with a Caregiver.  Sensory Storytime is an interactive program that can be enjoyed by all children, but is especially designed for children on the autism spectrum, those who are sensitive to sensory overload or have other special needs, and those who have difficulty sitting through a traditional storytime.  A parent or caregiver is required to attend with their child.  Participants will enjoy stories, songs, and a variety of sensory activities. Because this is a specialized storytime, registration is required for each session and is limited to 10 children, with priority given to those children for whom this program is designed.

Sensory Storytime will be led by Jessica Horvath, a certified speech-language pathologist.  This program is funded by a grant from The Weller Foundation.

The War to End All Wars: WWI in Four Lectures

Part 4: A Lost Generation

The War not only caused death and destruction to those fighting; the war’s effect on culture and thinking were catastrophic. The war was the end of an era, and to many, the end of one of the great periods of European civilization. Psychology, culture, philosophy- all of these took dramatic turns as a result of the war. This talk will discuss the war and its ending at the Versailles Conference, as well as its after-effects in the cultural, economic, and political spheres, which would ultimately result in the outbreak of war only twenty years after the close of the War to End All Wars.

Hamish Lutris is an Assistant Professor of History at Capital Community College.

Book Discussion

This month's selection is Hillbilly Elegy by J. D. Vance.

“Born in Kentucky and shuffling among homes in Ohio, the author ended the cycle of poverty, abuse, and drug use after becoming a U.S. Marine and Yale Law School graduate. Using examples from his own life with references to articles and studies throughout, Vance’s intent is to show that what was once the fulfillment of the American Dream has now left families in peril.”  (Library Journal)

Come share a lively discussion with us. Copies of the book are available for checkout at the front desk one month prior to the discussion date. No registration necessary.

R.E.A.D. with Franny

Children in grades K - 3 may register to read to Franny, a certified therapy dog, for a 15-minute session!  This program provides an opportunity for beginning and/or struggling readers to practice reading aloud to improve their reading skills.  Animals are ideal reading companions because they listen attentively; do not judge, laugh or criticize; allow children to proceed at their own pace; are less intimidating than peers.

Franny and her handler have been trained in the R.E.A.D.

This month's selection is Hag-Seed by Margaret Atwood.

“After being done out of his job by a scheming underling, a prominent theater festival director goes off-grid, teaching literacy and theater to prisoners and grieving a lost daughter. When he learns that the man who took his job will attend the next production, he sees his chance: in this Tempest, it won’t just be Prospero who gets revenge.”
(Publishers Weekly)

Come share a lively discussion with us. Copies of the book are available for checkout at the front desk one month prior to the discussion date. No registration necessary.

Book Discussion

This month's selection is Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly.

“Kelly’s compelling first novel follows three women through the course of World War II and beyond. Despite some horrific scenes, this is a page-turner demonstrating the tests and triumphs civilians faced during war, complemented by Kelly’s vivid depiction of history and excellent characters.” (Publishers Weekly)

Book Discussion

This month's selection is All Our Wrong Todays by Elan Mastai.

“In this imaginative debut, Tom Barren’s version of 2016 is a technological utopia based on a model popularized by 1950s science fiction. There are flying cars, robot maids, jet packs, teleportation, ray guns, and space vacations. Unfortunately, an accident causes Tom to travel to an alternate timeline, socially and technologically backward - in other words, our own 2016.” (Publishers Weekly)
