Community Read Book Discussion

Come to our inter-generational book discussion where we will explore the many complexities of Maus: A Survivor's Tale by Art Spiegelman.  The discussion will be facilitated by students from Fitchburg State University's English Honors Society. Light refreshments will be provided.

Art Spiegelman’s groundbreaking graphic novel Maus: A Survivor's Tale is the subject of Fitchburg State University’s Community Read for 2019-20.  Maus: A Survivor's Tale tells the story of the author interviewing his father about his experiences as a Polish Jew and Holocaust survivor.  It is part memoir, biography, and history.  This thought-provoking graphic novel won a Pulitzer Prize in 1992.

The Community Read, now in its seventh year, is a community-wide collaboration to celebrate not only the act of reading, but also to explore themes in the book through a series of panel discussions, lectures, film screenings and exhibitions.  The Community Read program is a collaborative effort between Fitchburg State University, the Fitchburg, Leominster and Lunenburg Public Libraries, Fitchburg High School and the Lunenburg Council on Aging.  Copies of  “Maus” are available to borrow at the Fitchburg, Lunenburg and Leominster public libraries, as well as the Amelia V. Gallucci-Cirio Library at Fitchburg State University.  To learn more, visit www.fitchburgcommunityread.com.

Please enter by the Newton Place (Youth Library) entrance.  This is a free program.  Free parking is available in the lot at the corner of Boulder Drive and Newto

An Irish Celebration of Harvest and Halloween in Story and Song

Join singer, harper, and storyteller Kate Chadbourne for a lively program of songs, stories, and spirited company that celebrates Autumn and honors the old Irish festival of Halloween. Draw up to the fire to hear an Irish tale and enjoy the sounds of Kate’s beautiful big harp, Irish flute, and tin whistle. There will be laughter and mystery, a touch of the spooky, some Irish words to savor and a heartfelt fáilte – welcome – for all who gather!

Generously funded by the Robert L. Rice Memorial Concert Fund and the Rice Family.

Please enter by the Newton Place (Youth Library) entrance as the rest of the library will be closed.

Kate Chadbourne is an award-winning songwriter and poet, a scholar and teacher of Irish language and folklore with a PhD from Harvard, and a beloved performer at venues throughout New England.  She has been honored as a “tradition bearer” in the Revels Salon series and in the Gaelic Roots Concert Series at Boston College, and her music has been featured on NPR’s programs, Kate Chadbourne“Cartalk” and “All Songs Considered.”  She has released four solo CD’s, three collections of poetry, and has collaborated on recordings and live performances with Tim Janis, Lauren Passarelli, The Chanticleers, The Celtic Kates, and many others.  Named as one of “The Most Fascinating People” in Central Massachusetts by the Sentinel and Enterprise Newspaper, Kate is also the founder of The Bardic Academy, a school for writers, musicians, singers, and young scholars. She brings to her audiences the sounds of the harp, piano, tin whistle, Irish flute, and melodeon, a deep love and knowledge of traditional Irish story, a warm and welcoming presence, and a voice often described as “the voice of an angel.”

Tarot: An Introduction to Tarot Card Reading
This workshop will cover the history of the cards, the meaning of the suits (pentacles, swords, wands and cups), and the Major Arcana cards. Sally Cragin uses the Ryder-Waite deck and talks about the Renaissance-era origins of the cards.

“This is a “hands-on” workshop. Everyone will get to practice their reading skills in the group. Attendees will focus on creating a narrative with the cards, and no experience necessary. In a world where everyone is always looking at moving images, spending time focusing on the beauty and mystery of Tarot cards will help build your insight.”

About the presenter:
Sally Cragin is an award-winning journalist whose arts writing and theatre reviews appeared regularly in the Boston Phoenix, Boston Herald, and most recently, the Boston Globe. She has won two Penney-Missouri Journalism awards for feature writing.

From 1997 to 2013, she wrote “Moon Signs” for many newspapers nationwide, including the Boston Phoenix chain. She is the author of The Astrological Elements, and Astrology on the Cusp (Llewellyn Worldwide) which have been translated and sold in a number of countries including India, Russia, Canada, British Virgin Islands, the Czech Republic and Estonia. From 1999-2001, she provided weekly astrological audio forecasts for Audible.com.
She has provided the new and full moon forecasts for Llewellyn Worldwide for many years, and written calendars with astrological forecasts for numerous companies.

She is the founder of Riverfront Family Theatre, based in north central Mass., a 501 ©3 organization which collaborates with Boys and Girls Club, area libraries and parks to create original improvisational theatre programs for children. A widely-published writer of creative work, her short plays have been produced in NYC, Boston, Provincetown, and north-Worcester county. Her first children’s book: “The Adventures of C.C. Sewercam” is being published by the City of Fitchburg, MA this summer.
