(Virtual) Forever Young Adult Book Club

Enjoy Young Adult books? Join the Forever Young Adult Book Club for adults ages 18+, run by the Flint's YA Librarian Nicole Dow. There we will pick a monthly YA novel to read and discuss at the following month's session; sessions will be hosted on Zoom.

This month's title: Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin

About the book:

Bound as one, to love, honor, or burn. Book one of a stunning fantasy trilogy, this tale of witchcraft and forbidden love is perfect for fans of Kendare Blake and Sara Holland.

Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned.

As a huntsman of the Church, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. But when Lou pulls a wicked stunt, the two are forced into an impossible situation—marriage.

Lou, unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, must make a choice. And love makes fools of us all.

Set in a world of powerful women, dark magic, and off-the-charts romance, book one of this stunning fantasy trilogy will leave readers burning for more." (via Amazon)

(Virtual) Flint Library Book Club

Come and engage in lively discussions of wonderful books! The first fifteen minutes of our virtual meeting will be dedicated to socializing and getting to mingle, followed by an hour-long discussion of this month's book. We will typically meet on the first Thursday of every month, and new members are always welcome and encouraged to join.

The book we will be discussing: City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert

About the book:

'All my life I had known there was a secret. What I hadn’t known: the secret was me.’

In the spring of 2016, Dani Shapiro received the stunning news that her father was not her biological father. Months earlier, on a whim, she had submitted her DNA to a genealogy website for analysis. The results were astonishing and revealed that everything she had believed about her life had been a lie.

Shapiro’s parents were no longer alive. With no one to turn to and only a handful of figures on a webpage, Shapiro set out to discover the truth about herself and her identity.

Inheritance is a genetic detective story; a memoir that reads like a thriller. It is a book about family secrets kept out of shame or self-protectiveness; secrets we keep from one another in the name of love. It is a book about the extraordinary moment we live in, where science and technology have outpaced both medical ethics and the capacities of the human heart to contend with the consequences of what we discover." (via Amazon)

Enjoy Young Adult books? Join the Forever Young Adult Book Club for adults ages 18+, run by the Flint's YA Librarian Nicole Dow. There we will pick a monthly YA novel to read and discuss at the following month's session; sessions will be hosted on Zoom.

This month's title: The Afterlife of Holly Chase by Cynthia Hand

About the book:

Holly Chase has the job of saving souls, but it is her own that she realizes needs examining. On Christmas Eve five years ago, Holly was visited by three ghosts who showed her how selfish and spoiled she'd become. They tried to convince her to mend her ways.

She didn't.

And then she died.

Now she's stuck working for the top-secret company Project Scrooge--as the latest Ghost of Christmas Past.

Every year, they save another miserly grouch. Every year, Holly stays frozen at seventeen while her family and friends go on living without her. So far, Holly's afterlife has been miserable.

But this year, everything is about to change." (via Amazon)
