(Virtual) Creating a Positive New Year in 2021: An 8-Week Email Series

Beginning on January 18, Melissa will share 8 meaningful and interesting ways to add a spark of creativity and fun to your New Year. Each Monday morning you will receive a short video explaining the theme for the week and giving you some homework to do. (No worries. It’s not graded! And it’s optional!) You are welcome to join at any point during the duration of the group.

Many people find the winter months a challenge. Once all the festivities of December have passed, January and February can be dreary months. The nights are long and the weather is cold. It’s the perfect time to join an engaging and uplifting email group with suggested activities to help you find joy and warmth. If you are interested in joining this group please email Melissa at mgaspar@flintpublib.org

You will receive an email each week with a short video by Melissa and a suggested activity.  Everything is optional but I hope you will join me as together we jumpstart the year in a positive way.

(Virtual) Film Discussion Club

Calling all film enthusiasts! Introducing the new Flint Public Library Film Discussion Club! Come and engage in lively discussions of wonderful films! We will meet on the third Thursday of every month. Bring along yourselves, your friends, your relatives, your pets – whoever is interested!

The film we will be discussing this month: The Public, written and directed by Emilio Estevez.

About the film:

“In The Public an unusually bitter Arctic blast has made its way to downtown Cincinnati and the front doors of the public library where the action of the film takes place. At odds with library officials over how to handle the extreme weather event, some homeless patrons turn the building into a shelter for the night by staging an "Occupy" sit in. What begins as an act of civil disobedience becomes a stand-off with police and a rush-to-judgment media constantly speculating about what's really happening. This David versus Goliath story tackles some of our nation's most challenging issues, homelessness and mental illness, and sets the drama inside one of the last bastions of democracy-in-action: your public library.” (via Amazon)

Watch the film in whatever manner you choose. If you need a DVD copy from the library, call or go online to reserve.

6:30 PM - 7:45 PM
(Virtual) Flint Library Book Club

Come and engage in lively discussions of wonderful books! The first fifteen minutes of our virtual meeting will be dedicated to socializing and getting to mingle, followed by an hour-long discussion of this month's book. We will typically meet on the first Thursday of every month, and new members are always welcome and encouraged to join.

The book we will be discussing: Finding Chika: A little girl, an earthquake, and the making of a family by Mitch Albom

About the book:

"Chika Jeune was born three days before the devastating earthquake that decimated Haiti in 2010. She spent her infancy in a landscape of extreme poverty, and when her mother died giving birth to a baby brother, Chika was brought to The Have Faith Haiti Orphanage that Albom operates in Port Au Prince.

With no children of their own, the forty-plus children who live, play, and go to school at the orphanage have become family to Mitch and his wife, Janine. Chika’s arrival makes a quick impression. Brave and self-assured, even as a three-year-old, she delights the other kids and teachers. But at age five, Chika is suddenly diagnosed with something a doctor there says, “No one in Haiti can help you with.”

Mitch and Janine bring Chika to Detroit, hopeful that American medical care can soon return her to her homeland. Instead, Chika becomes a permanent part of their household, and their lives, as they embark on a two-year, around-the-world journey to find a cure. As Chika’s boundless optimism and humor teach Mitch the joys of caring for a child, he learns that a relationship built on love, no matter what blows it takes, can never be lost.

Told in hindsight, and through illuminating conversations with Chika herself, this is Albom at his most poignant and vulnerable. Finding Chika is a celebration of a girl, her adoptive guardians, and the incredible bond they formed—a devastatingly beautiful portrait of what it means to be a family, regardless of how it is made." (via Amazon)
