(Virtual) Online Art Exhibition: 'Festivals and Folklore of Trinidad, West Indies'

View the Flint Library's online exhibition during the month of September, featuring the brightly colored paintings of Salem artist Indra Persad Milowe that depict many of her childhood memories of growing up in Trinidad, West Indies in the 1950s and 1960s.

Check out the exhibit by clicking here!

About the artist: Indra Persad Milowe is a Trinidad born visual artist living and working in Salem, MA. Her works bring to life many of her childhood memories of growing up in Trinidad, West Indies in the 1950s and 1960s. Her interests are nature, still life and design, and she was greatly inspired by her high school art teacher, who, on the first day of class, wrote on the blackboard: “Art is not only a painting hanging up on a wall, art is in every aspect of your daily life.” These words have been stuck in her head since. There is a personal story behind every one of her paintings; for this series of paintings, she painted every single festival celebrated in Trinidad, West Indies, as well as all of the folklore stories that she heard while growing up.

Would you like to have your artwork featured on the Flint Public Library's website? Email Charlie at cpope@flintpublib.org to learn how!

(In-Person) Novels & Nonfiction Book Club

Join us in person to discuss the thrilling historical fiction novel Hour of the Witch by Chris Bohjalian! Copies of the book in large print, regular print, and audiobook format are available at the library circulation desk. New members are always welcome!

This book club typically meets on the first Thursday of each month, and new members are always welcome and encouraged to join. We hope to see you there!

Please note: Attendees are required to wear facial coverings and practice social distancing during indoor sessions.

This month's book: Hour of the Witch by Chris Bohjalian

About the book (via Goodreads): Boston, 1662. Mary Deerfield is twenty-four-years-old. Her skin is porcelain, her eyes delft blue, and in England she might have had many suitors. But here in the New World, amid this community of saints, Mary is the second wife of Thomas Deerfield, a man as cruel as he is powerful. When Thomas, prone to drunken rage, drives a three-tined fork into the back of Mary's hand, she resolves that she must divorce him to save her life.

But in a world where every neighbor is watching for signs of the devil, a woman like Mary—a woman who harbors secret desires and finds it difficult to tolerate the brazen hypocrisy of so many men in the colony—soon becomes herself the object of suspicion and rumor. When tainted objects are discovered buried in Mary's garden, when a boy she has treated with herbs and simples dies, and when their servant girl runs screaming in fright from her home, Mary must fight to not only escape her marriage, but also the gallows.

A twisting, tightly plotted novel of historical suspense from one of our greatest storytellers, Hour of the Witch is a timely and terrifying story of socially sanctioned brutality and the original American witch hunt.

Registration: No registration is required for in-person sessions; if you have any questions about the program, please email cpope@flintpublib.org

(Virtual) Welcome to the Graveyard with the Gravestone Girls

Celebrate the spooky season with Brenda Sullivan of the Gravestone Girls at "Welcome to the Graveyard", an illustrated virtual tour that chronicles cemetery art, history, and symbolism featuring the local cemeteries and graveyards of Middleton. From the colonial New England burial grounds of the 1600s & 1700s, through the nation-wide rural cemetery movement of the 19th century, and into 21st century locations, we'll examine why we have cemeteries and gravestones, why they look like they do, and how styles and art have evolved over almost 400 years.

About the Gravestone Girls: Based in Massachusetts, the Gravestone Girls create decorative artwork using the beautiful and primitive images carved on old New England gravestones, give lectures and tours on cemetery art, history and symbolism, and teach gravestone rubbing classes. Their work aims to entertain and educate on the historical perspective of old cemeteries by documenting and preserving the beautiful art they contain.

Registration: Registration is required; to receive a link to the Zoom meeting, please visit the library circulation desk, or call (978) 774-8132 or email cpope@flintpublib.org

Age Group(s): Adults & Teens

(Virtual) Teen Book Club: The Mary Shelley Club by Goldy Moldavsky

Enjoy Young Adult books? Join Teen Librarian, Nicole Dow, for a monthly meetup to chat about a Young Adult novel and help pick out the following month's selection! Virtual sessions will be hosted on Zoom. This month's title: The Mary Shelley Club by Goldy Moldavsky

About the book (via Goodreads):

New girl Rachel Chavez is eager to make a fresh start at Manchester Prep. But as one of the few scholarship kids, Rachel struggles to fit in, and when she gets caught up in a prank gone awry, she ends up with more enemies than friends.

To her surprise, however, the prank attracts the attention of the Mary Shelley Club, a secret club of students with one objective: come up with the scariest prank to orchestrate real fear. But as the pranks escalate, the competition turns cutthroat and takes on a life of its own.

When the tables are turned and someone targets the club itself, Rachel must track down the real-life monster in their midst . . . even if it means finally confronting the dark secrets from her past.
