(Virtual) Creating a Positive New Year in 2021: An 8-Week Email Series

Beginning on January 18, Melissa will share 8 meaningful and interesting ways to add a spark of creativity and fun to your New Year. Each Monday morning you will receive a short video explaining the theme for the week and giving you some homework to do. (No worries. It’s not graded! And it’s optional!) You are welcome to join at any point during the duration of the group.

Many people find the winter months a challenge. Once all the festivities of December have passed, January and February can be dreary months. The nights are long and the weather is cold. It’s the perfect time to join an engaging and uplifting email group with suggested activities to help you find joy and warmth. If you are interested in joining this group please email Melissa at mgaspar@flintpublib.org

You will receive an email each week with a short video by Melissa and a suggested activity.  Everything is optional but I hope you will join me as together we jumpstart the year in a positive way.

(Virtual) Author Event: Webinar with Susan Mallery

Bestselling author Susan Mallery will discuss her latest book, The Vineyard At Painted Moon, in this Zoom webinar.

About The Author: #1 New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery writes heartwarming, humorous novels about the relationships that define our lives―family, friendship, romance. She's known for putting nuanced characters in emotional situations that surprise readers to laughter. Beloved by millions, her books have been translated into 28 languages. Susan lives in Washington with her husband, two cats, and a small poodle with delusions of grandeur. Learn more about Susan HERE.

About The Book: Step into the vineyard with Susan Mallery’s most irresistible novel yet, as one woman searches for the perfect blend of love, family and wine. Mackenzie Dienes seems to have it all—a beautiful home, close friends and a successful career as an elite winemaker with the family winery. There’s just one problem—it’s not her family, it’s her husband’s. In fact, everything in her life is tied to him—his mother is the closest thing to a mom that she’s ever had, their home is on the family compound, his sister is her best friend. So when she and her husband admit their marriage is over, her pain goes beyond heartbreak. She’s on the brink of losing everything. Her job, her home, her friends and, worst of all, her family. Staying is an option. She can continue to work at the winery, be friends with her mother-in-law, hug her nieces and nephews—but as an employee, nothing more. Or she can surrender every piece of her heart in order to build a legacy of her own. If she can dare to let go of the life she thought she wanted, she might discover something even more beautiful waiting for her beneath a painted moon.

About The Series: A collection of North of Boston libraries have joined forces to host a series of virtual discussions with bestselling authors this fall and winter. This event is co-sponsored by libraries in Andover, Billerica, Boxford, Burlington, Chelmsford, Dracut, Groveland, Haverhill, Littleton, Middleton, North Reading, Salisbury, Tewksbury, Westford and Wilmington.

6:30 PM - 7:45 PM
(Virtual) Flint Library Book Club

Come and engage in lively discussions of wonderful books! The first fifteen minutes of our virtual meeting will be dedicated to socializing and getting to mingle, followed by an hour-long discussion of this month's book. We will typically meet on the first Thursday of every month, and new members are always welcome and encouraged to join.

The book we will be discussing: The Dalai Lama's Cat by David Michie

About the book:

"‘Oh! How adorable! I didn’t know you had a cat!’ she exclaimed. I am always surprised how many people make this observation. Why should His Holiness not have a cat?‘ If only she could speak,’ continued the actress. ‘I’m sure she’d have such wisdom to share. ’And so the seed was planted . . .I began to think that perhaps the time had come for me to write a book of my own—a book that would convey some of the wisdom I’ve learned sitting not at the feet of the Dalai Lama but even closer, on his lap. A book that would tell my own tale . . . how I was rescued from a fate too grisly to contemplate to become the constant companion of a man who is not only one of the world’s greatest spiritual leaders and a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate but also a dab hand with a can opener."

Starving and pitiful, a mud-smeared kitten is rescued from the slums of New Delhi and transported to a life she could have never imagined. In a beautiful sanctuary overlooking the snow-capped Himalayas, she begins her new life as the Dalai Lama’s cat. Warmhearted, irreverent, and wise, this cat of many names opens a window to the inner sanctum of life in Dharamsala.

A tiny spy observing the constant flow of private meetings between His Holiness and everyone from Hollywood celebrities to philanthropists to self-help authors, the Dalai Lama’s cat provides us with insights on how to find happiness and meaning in a busy, materialistic world. Her story will put a smile on the face of anyone who has been blessed by the kneading paws and bountiful purring of a cat.(via Amazon)

(Virtual) Film Discussion Club

Calling all film enthusiasts! Introducing the new Flint Public Library Film Discussion Club! Come and engage in lively discussions of wonderful films! We will meet on the third Thursday of every month. Bring along yourselves, your friends, your relatives, your pets – whoever is interested!

The film we will be discussing this month: The Breakfast Club (1985)

About the film:

Five high school students from different walks of life endure a Saturday detention under a power-hungry principal (Paul Gleason). The disparate group includes rebel John (Judd Nelson), princess Claire (Molly Ringwald), outcast Allison (Ally Sheedy), brainy Brian (Anthony Michael Hall) and Andrew (Emilio Estevez), the jock. Each has a chance to tell his or her story, making the others see them a little differently -- and when the day ends, they question whether school will ever be the same." (Rotten Tomatoes)

Watch the film in whatever manner you choose. If you need a DVD copy from the library, give us a call or place a copy on hold via our online catalog for Curbside Pick-Up!

Registration: Email Justin Liberti at jliberti@flintpublib.org to receive the invitation to this Zoom meeting.

Enjoy Young Adult books? Join the Forever Young Adult Book Club for adults ages 18+, run by The Flint's YA Librarian, Nicole Dow. There we will pick a monthly YA novel to read and discuss at the following month's session; sessions will be hosted on Zoom.

This month's title: Dune by Frank Herbert

About the book:

Coveted across the known universe, melange is a prize worth killing for....

When House Atreides is betrayed, the destruction of Paul’s family will set the boy on a journey toward a destiny greater than he could ever have imagined.
