Breaker Space/ Meeting Room

Fall River Public Library introduces Breaker Space--a/k/a take-apart time, toy take-a-part, break & make, appliance autopsy, or deconstruction station!

The library will provide patrons with toys, electronics, or appliances and let them carefully take things apart to see what makes them tick. We will provide the tools and protective gear. This program is growing in popularity as it is a great opportunity for kids to explore how common household items work and expose them to circuitry concepts. Kids as well as adults become familiar with an object’s components, so they can identify how items can be repaired and learn how to create new ones by harvesting parts.

Note: safety goggles must be worn. Parents are responsible for supervising children.

Thank you to Home Depot, Schwartz Hardware, and Rocky's Ace Hardware for donations of tools and safety goggles!

Going to Extremes / Meeting Room

Friends of the Fall River Public Library present:

GOING TO EXTREMES An award-winning adventure travel journalist for The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, National Geographic, and The Providence JournalPeter Mandel hunts his stories and photos in the world's far corners, including Antarctica, India, Egypt, Patagonia, the fjords of Norway, the mountain pathways of Japan, and the deserts of Africa.

The author of ten books, he'll show slides of his most extreme travel experiences—surviving a coup in Ecuador, visiting a ‘city’ of penguins at the South Pole, fishing for piranha on Brazil’s Rio Negro, floating in the Goodyear Blimp, sailing on an Arctic icebreaker, camping in the African bush, and kayaking to the Statue of Liberty—and talk about how adventure travel turns to prose in today's media.

Mandel's books have been published by Simon & Schuster, Macmillan, HarperCollins and Henry Holt. One of his Boston Globe articles won the 2005 Lowell Thomas gold medal from the Society of American Travel Writers for adventure travel article of the year. Other articles, for The Washington Post and the Baltimore Sun, won Lowell Thomas Awards in 2003, 2006 and 2007.

Patriot's Day at the Lafayette-Durfee House

Celebrate Patriot's Day at one of the oldest homes in Fall River! Located within two blocks of the library on 94 Cherry Street, the house is a fully restored colonial home containing examples of clothing, medical instruments, military articles, toys, and much more. The morning will include a retelling of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's The Landlord's Tale, better known to most as The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere. Children will later be invited to make a minuteman soldier using a clothespin, pipecleaners, and colored paper.  A tour of the home will also be provided. Guests are asked to arrive at the home at 11:00 a.m. for the start of the program.

Paint Your Pet! Acrylic Paint Party

Acrylic painting workshop with artist and animal advocate Lori Bradley, author of Dogs Are Better Than People.

Paint Your Pet Workshop - Dog Portrait by Lori Bradley
Learn to paint from a subject you are inspired by--your pet! Create a painting of your animal companion from your own photo reference, or try an animal or nature painting from one of ours. The workshop is led by Lori Bradley, a practicing realist artist with over 20 years of college-level art teaching experience. She's developed art teaching techniques that enable students to learn to paint realistically while developing a personal sense of style and expression. Each student will create either a 8" x 10", 11" x 14," or 16" x 20" painting on canvas during one class period and bring it home the same day!

Registration is required for this event. Registration will open on April 1, 2019. Please call the circulation desk at 508-324-2700, ext. 2, to sign up. Bring a photo of your pet (or another animal or nature image you would like to paint). Paint and canvas are supplied.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Fall River Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.
