Seven Miles After Sundown - Book Talk / Meeting Room

Cape Cod fisherman "East End Eddie" Doherty will visit the library to talk about his new book, Seven Miles After Sundown, a  colorful, true account of one man’s quest in the pursuit of striped bass while surfcasting along the rocky banks of the world famous Cape Cod Canal. Included are personal stories, humorous anecdotes, and breathtaking photographs by highly acclaimed and widely renowned photographer John Doble.

Doherty, a retired District Court Clerk-Magistrate, has been published in newspapers and magazines, but this is his first book. The author is extremely grateful to United States Congressman Bill Keating for taking time out of his busy schedule to write the inspiring foreword. He will share some of his fishing strategies and stories about the legendary anglers who have contributed to making the Canal a well-known surfcaster’s paradise. See why people travel a great distance not only to fish, but to walk, run and ride bikes down the service roads bordering the powerful currents of the storied Cape Cod Canal.

Copies of the book will be available for purchase for $18 (cash only, please). This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Fall River Public Library.

Breaker Space/Fell Room

Fall River Public Library introduces Breaker Space--a/k/a take-apart time, toy take-a-part, break & make, appliance autopsy, or deconstruction station!

The library will provide patrons with toys, electronics, or appliances and let them carefully take things apart to see what makes them tick. We will provide the tools and protective gear. This program is growing in popularity as it is a great opportunity for kids to explore how common household items work and expose them to circuitry concepts. Kids as well as adults become familiar with an object’s components, so they can identify how items can be repaired and learn how to create new ones by harvesting parts.

Note: safety goggles must be worn. Parents are responsible for supervising children.

Thank you to Home Depot, Schwartz Hardware, and Rocky's Ace Hardware for donations of tools and safety goggles!

Book Talk: Blue Collars / Meeting Room

Fall River Public Library welcomes local author Catherine McLaughlin, who will share stories from her new book Blue Collars, published by Spinner Publications. Blue Collars tells the story of an Irish-American family in a typical working-class neighborhood in New Bedford from the 1950s through the 1970s. McLaughlin, a former English professor at at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Framingham State University, will answer questions about her book. Copies will be available for purchase and signing.

Please note that the date of this event has been changed from September 12 to October 3.

Blue Collars

“McLaughlin’s work never fails to leave the reader enthralled. Blue Collars is no exception. In this book, we journey the streets, backyards, and factories of New Bedford in the late 1950s throughout the fevered sixties as seen by McLaughlin’s young heroine, Finn. We watch hopefully as Finn overcomes one issue, dilemma after another — problems too heavy for her slender shoulders to bear, and we, the rapt reader, look for solutions alongside her.” — Patricia Gomes, Poet Laureate, City of New Bedford, Massachusetts

This free event is sponsored by the Friends of the Fall River Public Library

Milena Rodrigues Book Talk/Meeting Room

Book Talk: Milena Rodrigues, For the Love of Portuguese Food

For the Love of Portuguese Food

Milena Rodrigues grew up in a Portuguese household where eating hearty, homemade meals prepared with love was a daily occurrence. In her collection of traditional recipes, Milena shares simple dishes for anyone who enjoys Portuguese food, especially Luso descendants interested in recreating the food that their mothers, grandmothers and even fathers once cooked. With beloved recipes, which include the common ingredient of love, Milena provides anecdotes about her family, as well as easy-to-follow instructions to create delicious appetizers, soups, main dishes, desserts and breads. From littleneck clams with garlic and wine sauce to salted cod with onions to pork cutlet sandwiches to fava bean stew and finally, sweet goodies that include sweet rice and meringue soufflé. Milena leads home cooks down a tantalizing path of comforting foods infused with bold flavors. For the Love of Portuguese Food shares a compilation of scrumptious traditional dishes that allow both novice and seasoned home cooks to illuminate a wonderful culture at their own dinner tables.

Copies of For the Love of Portuguese Food will be available for purchase and signing at the event. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Fall River Public Library.
