Paintings by Judy Vine

Judy will be displaying pastel paintings in the Lower Level Art Gallery. Be sure to join us for an art reception on November 18 from 2-4 PM!

This sampling of 11 pastel paintings was primarily created over a two-year period, with premium soft part pastel on 400 grit pastel paper.

The materiality of the pastel and the rough surface of the paper work in concert to mark out and record a memory. The taction between the pastel stick and the rough paper creates a relationship between artist and work. This relationship provides vitality to the work. Planes of color, patterns and design complete the visual mosaic.

These paintings are part of a larger series labeled X's and O's, that reference childhood loves, both human and material kind. Their intent is to interact with the viewer's memory as well as reflect that of the artist's.

Don't Let Misleading Nutrition Concepts Harm You presented by Dr. Hsiao-Liang Pai

Registration is required but open to all, beginning October 26 at 10 AM. Please note that this program is for adults. Presented by Dr. Hsiao-Liang Pai, courtesy of the Asian-American Cultural Circle of Unity (AACCU).

Compared to surgery and medication which have expensive medical costs, preventive medicine uses long-term adjustments in diet and lifestyles to achieve optimal health goals. Our daily life is bombarded with exaggerated health effects in advertisements and nutritional information without scientific basis or evidence. Can we distinguish whether our food is nutritious or a burden?

  • Since sugar-substitutes are not sugar, will you not gain weight when consuming sugar substitutes?
  • Can whey protein powder supplementation after exercise be a better alternative than eating meat?
  • Soybeans are rich in phytoestrogen. Is increased intake of soybeans associated with a higher risk of breast cancer?
  • Margarine is made of vegetable oil. Does this make it healthier than animal fat?
  • Does eating sweets make people happy?
  • If fat and cholesterol are considered “unhealthy”, should we completely avoid consumption of these two nutrients?
  • Are gluten-free foods good for health?
  • Should cancer patients eat less so that the tumor will not grow faster?
  • Are medications the only way to manage the three hypers including hypertension, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia?

About Dr. Pai: After receiving a BS degree from Food and Nutrition Science Department in Shih-Chen Home Economic College and Chinese Cultural University, she worked as a clinical dietitian in Mackey Memorial Hospital (MMH) for about 8 years. Ms. Pai set up the first nutrition support team at MMH in Taiwan. She proceeded to obtain a MS in Human Nutrition Institute at Columbia University Medical School, MPH in School of Public Health at Columbia Medical School, and a MS in Teachers College at Columbia University in 1987, 1989 and 1991, respectively. In 2013, she received her Ed.D. degree in Nutritional Education from Teacher College at Columbia University in 2013. Dr. Pai started her teaching career as an adjunct instructor at Montclair State University (2014-2016). From 2016 up to present, she has continued to teach as an adjunct assistant professor since 2016. She devotes herself to providing accurate evidence-based nutrition information via her teaching and publishing books.

LOCATION: Large Multipurpose Room 34,, Main Library

This weekly writing exercise is open to writers of all abilities; from novices to semi-professionals. Our writing group moves from one genre to another. In October, our focus was the memoir and in November we will likely dedicate our time to fiction/short story writing. We all aspire to become better writers through process and practice. Participants will share their work, and may receive constructive feedback and critique, if requested.

Please join us for an afternoon of inspiration and creativity with a supportive group of local community patrons. We will meet on Nov..2, Nov. 16th, Nov. 30th and Dec. 14th from 2:00-3:30pm.  For more information about this workshop please call Main at 516-466-8055 ext. 218.

Author Event with Qin Sun Stubis: Once Our Lives

Qin Sun Stubis grew up in the squalor of a Shanghai shantytown during the Great Chinese Famine, her once-prestigious family shunned as political pariahs and forced to endure chronic poverty, torture, treacherous political shifts, and even an assassination attempt. But their nights came alive with stories of the family’s incredible history: colorful tales of pirates, prophecies, fortunes won and lost, glorious lives and gruesome deaths. Based on actual experiences and family lore from the Post-Imperial to Post-Cultural Revolution eras, Qin – a longtime newspaper columnist exploring the similarities and differences between East and West – has united these stories in a gorgeously-written and gripping nonfiction narrative, Once Our Lives, uncovering one of the most fascinating yet largely overlooked portions of Chinese history, as told by those who lived it.

This is the remarkable true story of four generations of Chinese women and how their lives were threatened by powerful and cruel ancient traditions, historic upheavals, gender oppression, and a man whose fate – cursed by a superstitious prophecy that appears to come true – dramatically altered their destinies. The book takes the reader on an exotic journey filled with luxurious banquets, lost jewels, babies sold in opium dens, kidnappings at sea, and a desperate flight from death in the desert – seen through the eyes of a man for whom the truth would spell disaster and a lonely, beautiful girl with three identities.

About the author: Eventually, through sheer grit and perseverance, Qin Sun Stubis won admission to the famed Shanghai Institute of Foreign Languages and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English and English Literature. With the help of family, friends, and a powerful U.S. Senator, Qin was granted a visa to study abroad. She arrived in America with two suitcases and not much more. After winning several scholarships, she graduated with a master’s degree and a profound love for her new adoptive country.

For the past 15 years, Qin has been a newspaper columnist and writes poems, essays, short stories, and original Chinese tall tales inspired by traditional Asian themes. Her writing is inflected with both Eastern and Western flavors in ways that transcend geography to touch hearts and reveal universal truths.

No registration required. First come first seated. Books will be available for purchase and signing at the event.

December Pick: Muder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie

Just after midnight, a snowdrift stops the famous Orient Express in its tracks as it travels through the mountainous Balkans. The luxurious train is surprisingly full for the time of the year but, by the morning, it is one passenger fewer. An American tycoon lies dead in his compartment, stabbed a dozen times, his door locked from the inside.

One of the passengers is none other than detective Hercule Poirot. On vacation.

Isolated and with a killer on board, Poirot must identify the murderer—in case he or she decides to strike again. (Goodreads)
