Arranged by the Music Advisory Committee

Joined by Brazilian bassist, Eduardo Belo, and drummer, Nick Anderson, Olli Soikkeli and Julien Labro will be performing music from their release as well as new takes on jazz standards, Gypsy repertoire and new original compositions.

French accordionist, Julien Labro, and Finnish guitarist, Olli Soikkeli met each other at a festival in Colorado in 2016.  Both based in New York City, they decided to join forces and collaborate on playing, writing originals as well as arrangements drawing from their diverse musical background. Michelangelo: Divine Draftsman and Designer visual lecture by Thomas Germano

Thomas Germano, Professor of Art and Art History will present a visual lecture on the life, times and work of Michelangelo Buonarroti and introduce the works related to this 'once in a lifetime exhibition' in NYC.

Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475–1564) was celebrated for the excellence of his disegno, the power of drawing and invention that provided the foundation for all the arts. Because of this, his contemporaries called him 'il divino,' or, 'the divine one.'

The Metropolitan Museum of Art's exhibition (November 13, 2017 - February 12, 2018) will present approximately 150 of Michelangelo's drawings, three of his marble sculptures, his earliest painting, his wood architectural model for a chapel vault, and many complementary works by other artists for comparison and context. The complete series of masterpiece drawings created for Tommaso de' Cavalieri and a monumental cartoon for his last fresco in the Vatican Palace will be among the works coming to the Met's exhibition. Selected from 54 public and private collections in the United States and Europe, the exhibition will examine Michelangelo's rich legacy as a supreme draftsman and designer.

Can Holocaust Trauma Be Inherited? presented by Linda F. Burghardt, Ph.D

Can Holocaust Trauma Be Inherited?  The Complex Genetic Legacy of the Second Generation presented by Linda F. Burghardt, Ph.D, Scholar-in-Residence, Holocaust Memorial & Tolerance Center

Psychological research has clearly documented how the profound legacy of loss and suffering experienced by Holocaust survivors deeply affects their children. Now biologists are saying that genetics can play an even larger role in transmitting this trauma to the next generation.  Dr. Burghardt will describe the science behind these claims and explain how this genetic legacy can have far-reaching consequences for the children of survivors -- and their own offspring.

Dr. Linda Burghardt is a journalist and author from Great Neck and the daughter of Holocaust survivors from Vienna.  She holds a Ph.D. from LIU Post and currently serves as Scholar-in-Residence at the Holocaust Memorial & Tolerance Center in Glen Cove.  She worked for many years as a reporter for The New York Times and is the author of three books.  Her articles and essays have appeared in newspapers across the U.S., and she has lectured to both national and international audiences.

History of the Great Neck Lighthouse
Great Neck Historical Society

Great Neck Historical Society

Stepping Stones Lighthouse, an essential aid to navigation, was built in 1876 to protect ships from a dangerous boulder reef which exists in Long Island Sound very close to the tip of Great Neck.  The Lighthouse is located less than a mile from our shore, and is best seen from Steppingstones Park, the Merchant Marine Academy, the Throgs Neck Bridge, City Island, and, of course, from the water.

The US Government has been divesting itself of its lighthouses, as it no longer has the funds to maintain them.  The Town of North Hempstead has agreed to attempt to rehabilitate the Lighthouse, and has partnered with the Great Neck Historical Society and the Great Neck Park District to accomplish this task.

The Lighthouse is in dire need of repair.  There are holes in the foundation and in the roof.  The chimney is broken, the inside has been gutted, and ice has been a major problem resulting in more and more cracks.  If the Lighthouse is not repaired, and if it succumbs to the weather, the government will erect a metal tower with a light at the top, and we will lose sight of the history that the Lighthouse represents.

It is the goal of the Historical Society, the Town and the Park District to restore the Lighthouse so that we may lead tours of the structure and safely share this relic of the past with the community.

February's Selection: Forever by Pete Hamill

Through the eyes of Cormac O'Connor--granted immortality as long as he never leaves the island of Manhattan--we watch New York grow from a tiny settlement on the tip of an untamed wilderness to the thriving metropolis of today. And through Cormac's remarkable adventures in both love and war, we come to know the city's buried secrets--the way it has been shaped by greed, race, and waves of immigration, by the unleashing of enormous human energies, and, above all, by hope.
