1000 Books Before Kindergarten

a deer reading a book

For all kids from birth up through entering kindergarten.

The single most important thing you can do to prepare your children to read is to read to them every day. Research proves that children need to hear 1000 books before they begin to learn to read independently.

Reading to children will: increase their vocabulary, increase their listening and narrative skills, help to instill in them self-awareness and confidence, impart an understanding of their place in the world.

Registration is required at goffstownlibrary.com/calendar. After your child has read their first 100 books, one of the rewards and incentives for this program is a 1000 Books Before Kindergarten tote bag!

Download & Print: Title Log (for parents), and Color-In Log (for kids).

For more information, including an Early Literacy Practices for Parents download, please visit www.goffstownlibrary.com/1000books.

Well Water in a Time of Climate Change

If you and your family rely on well water, what do you need to know about groundwater as floods and droughts become more common while the earth’s climate becomes less predictable? As part of our 2021 Community Conversations about the environment, the Goffstown Public Library is pleased to welcome Derek Skillings of Skillings and Sons, LLC, a third generation family business devoted to drilling, treating, and servicing residential and commercial water wells. If you have questions about well water in a time of climate change, Derek has the answers.

Registration is required. We will meet remotely, and all registered participants will receive an email invitation to join the discussion.

This event is part of our Community Conversations series; please visit http://www.goffstownlibrary.com/communityconversation for more information. This year’s Community Conversations are focused on dialog about our environment, including trash and recycling, stormwater, global warming, clothing recycling, our carbon footprint, and much more.

This month we're reading Mudbound by Hilary Jordan.

Build community and share your love of reading by joining the Goffstown Public Library's Afternoon Book Discussion, held on the third Wednesday of every month. Conversations are casual and supportive; new members are always welcome!

Physical copies of book group titles are available on a first-come, first-served basis from the Goffstown Public Library. Contact the meeting's moderator for more information or if you need help accessing this month's book.

Composting 101 for Kids

Watch on YouTube at www.youtube.com/goffstownlibrary.

To compost or not to compost – that is the question! Kids in kindergarten up through grade 5 can explore the benefits of composting by creating their own mini composted soil sample. Container, soil, and instructions will be provided to those who register, just add your own compost scraps from home and you will be off and composting!

Registration is required. Supply bags can be picked up beginning Tuesday, April 20 through Saturday, April 24. This video will premiere on Thursday, April 22 at 9am on YouTube, and will continue to be available for viewing anytime on our channel after that.

For more information about composting, check out the PDF Composting Food Waste: How to Get Started - a publication from www.lakesrpc.org and www.newmoa.org. Read more at https://www.epa.gov/recycle/composting-home.

This event is part of our Community Conversations series; please visit http://www.goffstownlibrary.com/communityconversation for more information. This year’s Community Conversations are focused on dialog about our environment, including trash and recycling, stormwater, global warming, clothing recycling, our carbon footprint, and much more.

Blame It on the Rain

As humans paved paradise and put up a parking lot, we have reduced the ability of the ground to soak up the rain. This increased runoff carries pollutants off-site and eventually into our rivers, streams, and lakes. Responsibility for our waterways begins locally with the Department of Public Works managing our municipal Separate Stormwater System (MS4) permit, in compliance with the EPA Clean Water Act. As part of our 2021 Community Conversations about the environment, join DPW Director, Adam Jacobs, to learn how run-off and its effects affect our infrastructure, planning, and environment right here in Goffstown.

Registration is required. We will meet remotely, and all registered participants will receive an email invitation to join the discussion.

For the Love of Pollinators

Think about what you ate today—did it require a pollinator to exist? What do honeybees and other important pollinators do for an ecosystem? How have these vital creatures been impacted by environmental change?  As part of our 2021 Community Conversations about the environment, the Goffstown Public Library is delighted to present pollinator expert and beekeeping educator Jodi Turner. Jodi and her husband Dean’s business, Imagine That Honey is devoted to modern beekeeping strategies and community education about pollinators. Jodi will address the questions above, plus she’ll tell you a bit about New Hampshire pollinators and what you can do to attract them to your yard.

Registration is required. We will meet remotely, and all registered participants will receive an email invitation to join the discussion.

Reduce, Reuse, & Reflect

The world of recycling markets has been thrown into turmoil by China’s refusal to accept recyclable material from outside their borders. Without the infrastructure to process this material, prices for disposal continue to rise and approach the cost of landfilling, begging the question: Is recycling worth it? As part of our 2021 Community Conversations about the environment, join Goffstown Department of Public Works Director, Adam Jacobs, in discussing how we got here, what we can do in the future, and ethical issues surrounding these considerations.

Registration is required. We will meet remotely, and all registered participants will receive an email invitation to join the discussion.

Film Discussion : How to Let Go of the World and Love All the Things Climate Can’t Change

What is it that climate change can’t destroy? The film, How to Let Go of the World and Love All the Things Climate Can’t Change asks this question. As part of the 2021 Community Conversations about the environment, join the Goffstown Public Library in a film discussion to contemplate the answer and learn from other community members. Structured like a book club, the conversation will be open and casual with all participants welcome. A library staff member will facilitate the discussion leaving plenty of room for community input.

Please view the film beforehand. DVD copies are available at the front desk while supplies last and the film is available via free streaming from May 15th to May 17th. See the separate calendar listing for more information about the streaming window and to access the film.

Registration is required. We will meet remotely, and all registered participants will receive an email invitation to join the discussion.

Book Group: Evening Discussion

"Forging a friendship at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, Odette, Clarice and Barbara Jean meet regularly at the first diner owned by black proprietors in their Indiana city and are watched throughout the years by a big-hearted man who observes their struggles with school, marriage, parenthood and beyond."

This month we're reading: The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat by Edward Kelsey Moore

Physical copies of book group titles are available on a first-come, first-served basis from the Goffstown Public Library, and some may be available through our e-library. Contact the meeting's moderator for more information or if you need help accessing this month's book. Large print and audiobooks may also be available.

Registration is required at www.goffstownlibrary.com/calendar. We will meet remotely and all registered participants will receive an email invitation to join the discussion.

Build community and share your love of reading by joining the Goffstown Public Library's Evening Book Discussion, held on the first Tuesday of every month. Conversations are casual and supportive; new members are always welcome!
