For all kids from birth up through entering kindergarten.
The single most important thing you can do to prepare your children to read is to read to them every day. Research proves that children need to hear 1000 books before they begin to learn to read independently.
Reading to children will: increase their vocabulary, increase their listening and narrative skills, help to instill in them self-awareness and confidence, impart an understanding of their place in the world.
When the Library is open, you can visit the Children's Room to sign up in person. Online registration is available at goffstownlibrary.com/calendar. After your child has read their first 100 books, one of the rewards and incentives for this program is a 1000 Books Before Kindergarten tote bag!
Download & Print: Title Log (for parents), and Color-In Log (for kids).

National Endowment for the Arts Big Read – The Bear by Andrew Krivak
The Big Read will take place from September through November 2023 and will feature book discussions, public programs, and a public Q&A with Andrew Krivak, all free and open to the public. Events will take place in all ten counties of the state.
About The Bear:
"In an Edenic future, a girl and her father live close to the land in the shadow of a lone mountain. They possess a few remnants of civilization: some books, a pane of glass, a set of flint and steel, a comb. The father teaches the girl how to fish and hunt, the secrets of the seasons and the stars. He is preparing her for an adulthood in harmony with nature, for they are the last of humankind. But when the girl finds herself alone in an unknown landscape, it is a bear that will lead her back home through a vast wilderness that offers the greatest lessons of all, if she can only learn to listen.
A cautionary tale of human fragility, of love and loss, The Bear is a stunning tribute to the beauty of nature’s dominion and explores powerful themes about the importance of intergenerational storytelling, our complicated relationship with the environment, and how to prepare for an unknown future."
If you'd like to read The Bear by Andrew Krivak, it is available with your library card as an audiobook in CD format and as an e-audiobook through the Libby and hoopla apps, as a physical book, and as an e-book in the Libby and cloudLibrary apps.
Public Programs are ongoing, learn more and register to attend at www.nhhumanities.org/bigread:

Traditional songs, rich in local history and a sense of place, present the latest news from the distant past. They help us to interpret present-day life with an understanding of the working people who built our country. Tavern songs, banjo tunes, 18th-century New England hymns, sailor songs, and humorous stories about traditional singers and their songs highlight this informative program by Jeff Warner.
Jeff Warner connects 21st-century audiences with the music and everyday lives of 19th-century people. He presents musical traditions from the lumber camps of the Adirondack Mountains and the whaling ports of New England to the Outer Banks fishing villages of North Carolina. Warner accompanies his songs on concertina, banjo, guitar, and several pocket instruments, such as bones and spoons. He is a Folklorist and Community Scholar for the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts and a former State Arts Council Fellow. He has toured nationally for the Smithsonian Institution and has recorded for Flying Fish, Rounder Records, and other labels. Jeff is a founder of the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival.
This concert has been made possible by a grant from New Hampshire Humanities, connecting people with ideas.
Registration appreciated.

Build community and share your love of reading by joining the Goffstown Public Library's Evening Book Discussion, held on the first Tuesday of every month. Conversations are casual and supportive; new members are always welcome!
This month we're reading: Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner
"In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular, high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food.
As she grew up, moving to the East Coast for college, finding work in the restaurant industry, and performing gigs with her fledgling band--and meeting the man who would become her husband--her Koreanness began to feel ever more distant, even as she found the life she wanted to live. It was her mother's diagnosis of terminal cancer, when Michelle was twenty-five, that forced a reckoning with her identity and brought her to reclaim the gifts of taste, language, and history her mother had given her."
Physical copies of book group titles are available on a first-come, first-served basis from the Goffstown Public Library, and some may be available through our e-library. Contact the meeting's moderator for more information or if you need help accessing this month's book. Large print and audiobooks may also be available.

Join fellow book enthusiasts on the third Wednesday of every month for our Afternoon Book Group. Conversations are casual and supportive; new members are always welcome.
This month we're reading: Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro
"From her place in the store that sells artificial friends, Klara--an artificial friend with outstanding observational qualities--watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass in the street outside. She remains hopeful a customer will soon choose her, but when the possibility emerges that her circumstances may change forever, Klara is warned not to invest too much in the promises of humans. In this luminous tale, Klara and the Sun, Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro looks at our rapidly changing modern world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator to explore a fundamental question: what does it mean to love?"
Physical copies of book group titles are available on a first-come, first-served basis from the Goffstown Public Library, and some may be available through our e-library. Contact the meeting's moderator for more information or if you need help accessing this month's book. Large print and audiobooks may also be available.

For more information, including an Early Literacy Practices for Parents download, please visit www.goffstownlibrary.com/1000books.

"Now as always in our history, reading is among our greatest freedoms. The freedom to read and write is almost the only means for making generally available ideas or manners of expression that can initially command only a small audience. The written word is the natural medium for the new idea and the untried voice from which come the original contributions to social growth. It is essential to the extended discussion that serious thought requires, and to the accumulation of knowledge and ideas into organized collections." Read the American Library Association's (ALA) Freedom to Read Statement at ala.org.
Freedom of Information (FOI) Day is an annual event on or near March 16, the birthday of James Madison, who is widely regarded as the Father of the Constitution and the foremost advocate for openness in government. Each year, the James Madison Award and the Eileen Cooke State & Local Madison Award are presented by ALA on Freedom of Information Day to recognize those individuals or groups that have championed, protected, and promoted public access to government information and the public’s right to know.
