1000 Books Before Kindergarten

a deer reading a book

For all kids from birth up through entering kindergarten.

The single most important thing you can do to prepare your children to read is to read to them every day. Research proves that children need to hear 1000 books before they begin to learn to read independently.

Reading to children will: increase their vocabulary, increase their listening and narrative skills, help to instill in them self-awareness and confidence, impart an understanding of their place in the world.

Registration is required at goffstownlibrary.com/calendar. After your child has read their first 100 books, one of the rewards and incentives for this program is a 1000 Books Before Kindergarten tote bag!

Download & Print: Title Log (for parents), and Color-In Log (for kids).

For more information, including an Early Literacy Practices for Parents download, please visit www.goffstownlibrary.com/1000books.

Medieval Cooking

Encounter the flavors of the past in your kitchen today! Join local author M. Allyson Szabo for the history of food from the Middle Ages. Plus, Allyson will give a cooking demonstration using a recipe from her new book!

From the Re-enactor's Cookbook...
Reenacting is enjoying a renaissance these days, with fairs springing up around the country. What better way to display, teach, and enjoy the presentation of the Middle Ages than with food?

Food has always brought people together, and it's a way to cross cultural divides in a pleasant way. History often seems very dry and unappealing to people, whereas food will draw in the patrons to see what you're doing! Within, you'll find recipes galore, laid out in an easy-to-read format. You can also read the history behind the recipes, ingredients, and spices mentioned in each section of the book. You can enjoy this as a simple cookbook, as an historical reference piece, or a blend of both. There are practical tips on everything from creating a cooking fire, to what type of cooking vessels to use, to how to make this stuff on your electric stove at home.

There's so much to learn and a vast array of new (and sometimes exotic) flavors to try. There's a little something for everyone, including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free recipes. Learn how to adapt recipes to fit your diet, and how to make them easy to enjoy while at an event, while camping, or even just at home on a week night. Enjoy a taste of the past in your life today!

Registration is required at www.goffstownlibrary.com/calendar. We will meet remotely via Webex and all registered participants will receive an email invitation to join the discussion. Webex is a secure way to have a virtual video conference, and it's easy to use on a computer or mobile device. If you'd like to see step-by-step instructions, please visit https://help.webex.com/en-us/nrbgeodb/Join-a-Webex-Meeting. You'll find links to help screens and frequently asked questions there.

Book Group: Afternoon Discussion

"A graphic memoir recounting actor/author/activist George Takei's childhood imprisoned within American concentration camps during World War II.

In 1942, at the order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, every person of Japanese descent on the west coast was rounded up and shipped to one of ten “relocation centers,” hundreds or thousands of miles from home, where they would be held for years under armed guard.

They Called Us Enemy is Takei’s firsthand account of those years behind barbed wire, the terrors and small joys of childhood in the shadow of legalized racism, his mother’s hard choices, his father’s tested faith in democracy, and the way those experiences planted the seeds for his astonishing future."

This month we're reading They Called Us Enemy by George Takei.

Build community and share your love of reading by joining the Goffstown Public Library's Afternoon Book Discussion, held on the third Wednesday of every month. Conversations are casual and supportive; new members are always welcome!

Physical copies of book group titles are available on a first-come, first-served basis from the Goffstown Public Library. Contact the meeting's moderator for more information or if you need help accessing this month's book.

"Here is Oscar Wilde's most brilliant tour de force, a witty and buoyant comedy of manners that has delighted millions in countless productions since its first performance in London's St. James' Theatre on February 14, 1895. The Importance of Being Earnest is celebrated not only for the lighthearted ingenuity of its plot, but for its inspired dialogue, rich with scintillating epigrams still savored by all who enjoy artful conversation."

This month we're reading: The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde
