Courageous Community Conversations: Recognizing and Understanding Implicit Bias

Join the ConversationDiscussion at Parks & Recreation Department, Conference Room

Implicit bias refers to the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner. This is a 2-hour, highly interactive workshop where participants will learn how to recognize the unconscious biases we all have and how to interact with the others without assuming we know how they want to be treated thus creating a more welcoming environment.

Registration is requested. For campus map and parking information for Saint Anselm, please visit www.anselm.edu/admission-aid/visit/campus-map-parking.

This event is part of our Courageous Community Conversations series; please visit http://www.goffstownlibrary.com/communityconversation for more information.

This year’s Courageous Community Conversations are focused on race and diversity in America. Our reading list and conversations are designed to help us understand many racial and cultural issues, as well as provide a starting point to open up the conversation about race in Goffstown, and hopefully, in other surrounding communities. In our present social environment, it is important to be racially and culturally diverse, to be socially aware, and to learn and grow.

Meet Author Judy Pancoast

Christmas lights image surrounds book cover for The House on Christmas Street by Judy Pancoast.

While you may  know her as Goffstown's own Grammy-nominated composer and songstress, Judy Pancoast is celebrating another accomplishment: becoming a novelist. In this adult-oriented program, Judy will sing original Christmas songs and read excerpts from the newly published novel inspired by one of those songs, "The House on Christmas Street". Set in a small city in Maine in the present day, "The House on Christmas Street" is a light-hearted tale about how a gargantuan holiday lights display divides, and ultimately unites, the members of its neighborhood.

The presentation will be followed by Q&A and book signing. Books will be available for purchase from the author, and refreshments will be served.

Registration is appreciated.

Courageous Community Conversations: Active Bystander Training

Join the Conversation Active Bystander Training at Goffstown Fire Department

This two-hour training led by Aron DiBacco of the Granite State Organizing Project will give you tools and insights to use in such situations and a chance to think about how you might use them. In this highly interactive session we present information, share experiences, and strategize bystander responses to a variety of situations. Participants will learn about roles we all play, what discourages us from acting when we see harm doing, how to move through this resistance, tools to use when we are ready, and basic principles to guide our actions.

Registration is requested.
