For all kids from birth up through entering kindergarten.
The single most important thing you can do to prepare your children to read is to read to them every day. Research proves that children need to hear 1000 books before they begin to learn to read independently.
Reading to children will: increase their vocabulary, increase their listening and narrative skills, help to instill in them self-awareness and confidence, impart an understanding of their place in the world.
When the Library is open, you can visit the Children's Room to sign up in person. Online registration is available at goffstownlibrary.com/calendar. After your child has read their first 100 books, one of the rewards and incentives for this program is a 1000 Books Before Kindergarten tote bag!
Download & Print: Title Log (for parents), and Color-In Log (for kids).
For more information, including an Early Literacy Practices for Parents download, please visit www.goffstownlibrary.com/1000books.

"Borrow" seeds for your garden! Located on the third floor, the Seed Library is now available to "check out". The steps are simple: choose what seed varieties you want, fill out the sign-out sheet with your selections, and enjoy!
This project is based on the honor system, so a staff member is not needed to "check out" seeds. When using the Seed Library, take what you need but remember to leave enough for others.
We're also collecting harvested seeds at the end of the summer, so please note that you would like to participate in that when you're filling out the sign-out sheet.
Happy gardening and be sure to use #goffstownlibrary to share your Seed Library bounty!
The Goffstown Seed Library is made possible by the Friends of the Goffstown Public Library and the New Hampshire Free Seed Program.

New Hampshire's White Mountains feature 48 peaks that top out at 4,000 feet or higher. This presentation will take you up all 48 of these mountains and detail the challenge. Utilizing a slideshow, videos, and stories from his own experiences, Keith Gentili, author of White Mountains State, shares the hardships and triumphs of hiking our state's most breathtaking views and difficult trails. This discussion features everything from gear to wildlife, backpacking and solo hiking, to winter and night hiking, and more. For those who have climbed these mountains, it will surely remind you just how special and beautiful the White Mountains are.
Join Keith for a presentation on New Hampshire’s 48 highest peaks followed by a Q&A session and book signing. Registration appreciated.
About the book:
This is a down-to-earth, everyman story for anyone with an interest in the outdoors, hiking, and mountain climbing. White Mountains State succeeds in highlighting both the trails and challenges of the New Hampshire 48 as well as the deep satisfaction and accomplishment that can result in finishing the list. A dedicated husband and father, and an adventurous friend to his neighbors and college buddies, Keith gives an honest and detailed account of hiking each of the NH48 mountains, either solo or with those he recruits, all while making sure his quest harmonizes with his family life and hiking partnerships. Gentili's book will make you fall in love with the hills, and inspire you to climb your own mountains, whatever they may be.

Join fellow book enthusiasts on the third Wednesday of every month for our Afternoon Book Group. Conversations are casual and supportive; new members are always welcome.
This month we're reading: Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro
"From her place in the store that sells artificial friends, Klara--an artificial friend with outstanding observational qualities--watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass in the street outside. She remains hopeful a customer will soon choose her, but when the possibility emerges that her circumstances may change forever, Klara is warned not to invest too much in the promises of humans. In this luminous tale, Klara and the Sun, Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro looks at our rapidly changing modern world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator to explore a fundamental question: what does it mean to love?"
Physical copies of book group titles are available on a first-come, first-served basis from the Goffstown Public Library, and some may be available through our e-library. Contact the meeting's moderator for more information or if you need help accessing this month's book. Large print and audiobooks may also be available.

"Now as always in our history, reading is among our greatest freedoms. The freedom to read and write is almost the only means for making generally available ideas or manners of expression that can initially command only a small audience. The written word is the natural medium for the new idea and the untried voice from which come the original contributions to social growth. It is essential to the extended discussion that serious thought requires, and to the accumulation of knowledge and ideas into organized collections." Read the American Library Association's (ALA) Freedom to Read Statement at ala.org.
Freedom of Information (FOI) Day is an annual event on or near March 16, the birthday of James Madison, who is widely regarded as the Father of the Constitution and the foremost advocate for openness in government. Each year, the James Madison Award and the Eileen Cooke State & Local Madison Award are presented by ALA on Freedom of Information Day to recognize those individuals or groups that have championed, protected, and promoted public access to government information and the public’s right to know.
