1000 Books Before Kindergarten

a deer reading a book

For all kids from birth up through entering kindergarten.

The single most important thing you can do to prepare your children to read is to read to them every day. Research proves that children need to hear 1000 books before they begin to learn to read independently.

Reading to children will: increase their vocabulary, increase their listening and narrative skills, help to instill in them self-awareness and confidence, impart an understanding of their place in the world.

When the Library is open, you can visit the Children's Room to sign up in person. Online registration is available at goffstownlibrary.com/calendar. After your child has read their first 100 books, one of the rewards and incentives for this program is a 1000 Books Before Kindergarten tote bag!

Download & Print: Title Log (for parents), and Color-In Log (for kids).

For more information, including an Early Literacy Practices for Parents download, please visit www.goffstownlibrary.com/1000books.

Tick-Safe Strategies for Outdoor Activities in NH or, the “Tick Talk”

As we welcome warmer weather and delight in being outdoors, it’s time for the “Tick Talk”. The GPL welcomes Joe McCue of TickFree New Hampshire, whose presentation will help you to prevent and protect yourself from tick bites or safely remove and identify ticks that have already bitten you. Tick-borne illnesses have surged recently in New Hampshire, and it is a sad reality that there are no human inoculations available for these irksome arachnids. Join us to better learn what you, as an outdoor adventurer, gardener, picknicker, or worker can do to minimize tick encounters and prevent bites.

This presentation is sponsored by The NH Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health, Climate and Health.

No registration required, just meet us on the lawn.

Book Group: Evening Discussion

"Here is Oscar Wilde's most brilliant tour de force, a witty and buoyant comedy of manners that has delighted millions in countless productions since its first performance in London's St. James' Theatre on February 14, 1895. The Importance of Being Earnest is celebrated not only for the lighthearted ingenuity of its plot, but for its inspired dialogue, rich with scintillating epigrams still savored by all who enjoy artful conversation."

Book Group: Afternoon Discussion

"Ghana, eighteenth century: two half sisters are born into different villages, each unaware of the other. One will marry an Englishman and lead a life of comfort in the palatial rooms of the Cape Coast Castle. The other will be captured in a raid on her village, imprisoned in the very same castle, and sold into slavery.

One of Oprah’s Best Books of the Year and a PEN/Hemingway award winner, Homegoing follows the parallel paths of these sisters and their descendants through eight generations: from the Gold Coast to the plantations of Mississippi, from the American Civil War to Jazz Age Harlem."

This month we're reading Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi.
