March programming will be on hiatus as we are facing an unanticipated staffing shortage. Due to this staffing shortage, the Library is not able to offer any staff-led programming in March. We still have a lot to offer, please scroll down for our Events List!
We hope to resume staff-led programming in April. We apologize for any inconvenience, and ask for your patience while we prioritize staffing our service desks, assisting our patrons, and training temporary staff.

In April of 1945, exactly two years before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in major league baseball, liberal Boston City Councilman Izzy Muchnick persuaded the Red Sox to try out three black players in return for a favorable vote to allow the team to play on Sundays. The Red Sox got the councilman’s much-needed vote, but the tryout was a sham; the three players would get no closer to the major leagues. It was a lost battle in a war that was ultimately won by Robinson in 1947. This book tells the story of the little-known heroes who fought segregation in baseball, from communist newspaper reporters to the Pullman car porters who saw to it that black newspapers espousing integration in professional sports reached the homes of blacks throughout the country. It also reminds us that the first black player in professional baseball was not Jackie Robinson but Moses Fleetwood Walker in 1884, and that for a time integrated teams were not that unusual. And then, as segregation throughout the country hardened, the exclusion of blacks in baseball quietly became the norm, and the battle for integration began anew.
Visit with author Ted Reinstein, who has been a reporter for “Chronicle,” WCVB-TV/Boston’s award-winning—and America’s longest-running, locally-produced—nightly news magazine since 1997. In addition, he has been a contributor for the station’s political roundtable show and sits on WCVB’s editorial board. He lives just west of Boston with his wife and two daughters. He is also the author of New England Notebook (Globe, 2013) and Wicked Pissed (Globe, 2016).

For over 40 years, Indigenous leaders have been calling for the Flag & Seal of Massachusetts to be changed. To many, the imagery of a white hand holding a sword over the head of an Indigenous person, and the Latin motto, "By the Sword She Seeks Peace, but Peace with Liberty," speaks of a history of violent colonization and conquest.
On January 6th, 2021, the Massachusetts Legislature established a Special Commission on the Official Seal and Motto of the Commonwealth, and invited Native leaders from the Wampanoag, Nipmuc, and Massachusett nations to sit with state legislators, historians, and others to recommend changes to the state symbol.
In 2022, the statewide special commission recommended a total revision of the Massachusetts flag and seal. An article on the May 8th, 2023 annual town meeting warrant will ask Grafton voters if they are in support of changing the flag and seal of Massachusetts. Come find out more about this important racial justice issue.

Plastic is everywhere in our lives, it’s a common substance found in our houses to our toys. It is invading our oceans and rivers which forces animals to flee their habitats and its production contributes to rising global temperatures. We must work together to tackle this issue and preserve our planet for future generations. Join Jan Elise Tyalor of the Conservation Commission and student Jude Thomas for a presentation to learn about plastics, their impacts on the environment, and how you can be part of the solution.
This program is intended for students in 5th-8th grade, but all are welcome.

Hundreds of novels, films, and TV shows have speculated about what it would be like for us Earthlings to build cities on Mars. To make it a reality, however, these dreamers are in sore need of additional conceptual tools in their belt—particularly, a rich knowledge of city planning and design.
Award-winning author and Tufts University professor, Justin Hollander, will draw on his experience as an urban planner and researcher of human settlements to offer a presentation on what a city on Mars might actually look like. Exploring the residential, commercial, industrial, and infrastructure elements of such an outpost, the Professor Hollander is able to paint a vivid picture of how a Martian community would function – the layout of its public spaces, the arrangement of its buildings, its transportation network, and many more crucial aspects of daily life on another planet. Professor Hollander will then bring all these lessons to life through his own rendered plan for “Aleph,” one of many possible designs for the first city on Mars.
Bio
Justin B. Hollander, PhD, is a Professor of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning at Tufts University. He is an internationally renowned expert on the planning and design of human settlements, having written nine books and over 50 refereed journal articles on these topics. Prof. Hollander is a frequent speaker, having appeared on both TV and radio – C-SPAN’s Washington Journal and the Diane Ream Show on NPR. He is also regularly called upon as an expert for a variety of media sources on urban planning and design issues, including The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, TIME Magazine, USA Today, Crain’s New York Business, and the Las Vegas Sun. He was recently inducted as a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners and hosts the Apple podcast “Cognitive Urbanism”.
