Virtual Program: DIY Face Masks

This is an at-home activity and opportunity to connect with other crafters and sewers for a good cause! Make a face mask to prevent the spread of germs. Create one for yourself, your family members, or hospitals/medical offices in need! Watch the video tutorial below, then connect with those in need. Visit the GPL DIY Face Mask Event Page to post a photo of what you made.

Instructional Video: https://www.youtube.com/embed/4FB--BOyTiU

Tips:

  • Use a tightly woven fabric (100% cotton - sheets or flannel suggested)
  • Keep in mind face masks will be worn by all genders.

Elastic can be purchased online through Joanne's Fabrics, Michael's or AC Moore. One of the many suggestions, however, is that fabric ties are more comfortable and last longer after frequent laundering than elastic if you want to find a video with directions using those instead.

Pattern with elastics: https://thestitchingscientist.com/2020/03/how-to-sew-a-face-mask.html

Cricut / handcut pattern with ribbon ties: https://jennifermaker.com/face-mask-patterns-cricut/

What to do with the finished mask? Volunteer your time/donate your masks in Boston/New England

Post a photo of your completed project on the Facebook Event Page, Twitter or Instagram with the tag #paintchippoetry - don't forget to tag the Library: @graftonpublib on Twitter or @graftonpubliclibrary on Instagram

Virtual Book Discussion: Reads Well with Others Book Group

June 2020 Reads Well with Others Book Group

Join us on Slack (see instructions below) for an online discussion of Boy, Snow, Bird by Helen Oyeyemi, available through Overdrive / Libby in eBook format.

Description: "From the prizewinning author of Mr. Fox, the Snow White fairy tale brilliantly recast as a story of family secrets, race, beauty, and vanity. In the winter of 1953, Boy Novak arrives by chance in a small town in Massachusetts, looking, she believes, for beauty-the opposite of the life she's left behind in New York. She marries a local widower and becomes stepmother to his winsome daughter, Snow Whitman. A wicked stepmother is a creature Boy never imagined she'd become, but elements of the familiar tale of aesthetic obsession begin to play themselves out when the birth of Boy's daughter, Bird, who is dark-skinned, exposes the Whitmans as light-skinned African Americans passing for white. Among them, Boy, Snow, and Bird confront the tyranny of the mirror to ask how much power surfaces really hold. Dazzlingly inventive and powerfully moving, Boy, Snow, Bird is an astonishing and enchanting novel. With breathtaking feats of imagination, Helen Oyeyemi confirms her place as one of the most original and dynamic literary voices of our time. "
