Reads Well with Others Book Group

Image of item

The "Reads Well with Others" Book Group meets to discuss The City Baker’s Guide to Country Living, by Louise Miller.

Description: A full-hearted novel about a big-city baker who discovers the true meaning of home, and that sometimes the best things are found when you didn't even know you were looking. When Olivia Rawlings, pastry chef extraordinaire for an exclusive Boston dinner club, sets not just her flambed dessert but the entire building alight, she escapes to the most comforting place she can think of, the idyllic town of Guthrie, Vermont, home of Bag Balm, the country's longest-running contra dance, and her best friend Hannah. But the getaway turns into something more lasting when Margaret Hurley, the cantankerous, sweater-set-wearing owner of the Sugar Maple Inn, offers Livvy a job. Broke and knowing that her days at the club are numbered, Livvy accepts. Livvy moves with her larger-than-life, uberenthusiastic dog, Salty, into a sugarhouse on the inn's property and begins creating her mouthwatering desserts for the residents of Guthrie. She soon uncovers the real reason she has been hired: to help Margaret reclaim the inn's blue ribbon status at the annual county fair apple pie contest. With the joys of a fragrant kitchen, the sound of banjos and fiddles being tuned in a barn, and the crisp scent of the orchard just outside the front door, Livvy soon finds herself immersed in small town life. And when she meets Martin McCracken, the Guthrie native who has returned from Seattle to tend his ailing father, Livvy comes to understand that she may not be as alone in this world as she once thought. But then another new arrival takes the community by surprise, and Livvy must decide whether to do what she does best and flee or stay and finally discover what it means to belong. Olivia Rawlings may finally find out that the life you want may not be the one you expected, it could be even better. Copies are available to check out at the Library.

Holiday Rubber Duck Soapmaking Workshop

Come and create a special holiday themed rubber duck soap! Keep it for yourself or give it as a fun gift. Each participant will make their own soapy creation using glycerin based soap and adding colors and scents. You'll have a variety of Christmas and winter themed rubber ducks to choose from. And you'll be able to take your soap with you at the end of the program and begin using it the next day.

This free program is open to adults, teens (grades 6-12) and kids (grades K-5). Children under the age of 10 must have a parent or guardian to lend a helping hand since the soap can get hot.

Due to the tight space, each session is limited to 4 participants. Each participant must register seperately. Parents/guardians are welcome to create their own soap while assisting a younger participant but they must also register for a slot.

In order to keep the day running smoothly please arrive 5-10 minutes early so that each session can start promptly.

Only one soap/slot/sign up per person. Duplicate registrations will be deleted.

Reads Well with Others Book Group

The "Reads Well with Others" Book Group meets to discuss The Last Christmas in Paris, by Hazel Gaynor.

Description: August 1914. England is at war. As Evie Elliott watches her brother, Will, and his best friend, Thomas Harding, depart for the front, she believes--as everyone does--that it will be over by Christmas, when the trio plan to celebrate the holiday among the romantic cafes of Paris. But as history tells us, it all happened so differently... Evie and Thomas experience a very different war. Frustrated by life as a privileged young lady, Evie longs to play a greater part in the conflict--but how?--and as Thomas struggles with the unimaginable realities of war he also faces personal battles back home where War Office regulations on press reporting cause trouble at his father's newspaper business. Through their letters, Evie and Thomas share their greatest hopes and fears--and grow ever fonder from afar. Can love flourish amid the horror of the First World War, or will fate intervene? Christmas 1968. With failing health, Thomas returns to Paris--a cherished packet of letters in hand--determined to lay to rest the ghosts of his past. But one final letter is waiting for him...

The Daytimers Book Group meets to discuss Mr. Dickens and His Carol, by Samantha Silva.

Description: Charles Dickens is not feeling the Christmas spirit. His newest book is an utter flop, the critics have turned against him, relatives near and far hound him for money. While his wife plans a lavish holiday party for their ever-expanding family and circle of friends, Dickens has visions of the poor house. But when his publishers try to blackmail him into writing a Christmas book to save them all from financial ruin, he refuses. And a serious bout of writer's block sets in. Frazzled and filled with self-doubt, Dickens seeks solace in his great palace of thinking, the city of London itself. On one of his long night walks, in a once-beloved square, he meets the mysterious Eleanor Lovejoy, who might be just the muse he needs. As Dickens' deadlines close in, Eleanor propels him on a Scrooge-like journey that tests everything he believes about generosity, friendship, ambition, and love. The story he writes will change Christmas forever.

The GPL Mystery Book Group meets to discuss Ornaments of Death, by Jane K. Cleland.

Description: Christmas lights twinkle throughout the cozy coastal town of Rocky Point, New Hampshire, and Prescott's Antiques auction venue has been transformed into a winter wonderland for Josie Prescott's annual holiday party. Josie is especially excited this year-Ian Bennington, a recently discovered distant relative, will be joining the fun. Both Ian and Josie are, it seems, descended from Arabella Churchill, a 17th century royal mistress. The party is a success and Ian is a hit. It gives Josie an unexpected thrill to have family-and unexpected dread when he vanishes. Ian doesn't keep his dinner date with Josie's good friend, Lavinia, or his lunch date with her. Surely, he would have done so-if he could. Ian has given his daughter two priceless 17th century watercolor miniature portraits, one of Arabella and one of her lover, King James II, and they've gone missing, too. Knowing that after her nasty divorce, Lavinia is facing financial ruin, Josie can't help wondering if her friend is behind the theft-and Ian's disappearance. Determined to find Ian, Josie uses her knowledge of antiques to track the miniatures. In doing so, she learns the true meaning of Christmas-and the true meaning of family.

Inspirational Book Group

The Inspirational Book Group meets to discuss This Year I Will-- : How to Finally Change a Habit, Keep a Resolution or Make a Dream Come True, by M.J. Rayan.

Description: Learn the secret to making changes that stick. Every so often people get inspired (again!) to lose weight, get organized, start saving, or stop worrying--but a few months later they give up, frustrated. It doesn't have to be that way. Author Ryan offers wisdom and coaching to help readers make this time the time that change becomes permanent. People think there is one way to lose weight, and another way to stay on top of their e-mail. Rather than one-system-fits-all, each person has their own formula for making changes that stick--but most people don't know what theirs is. This book helps you lock on to your unique formula for planning, implementing, and seeing a life change through, so you can use it again and again to tackle anything else you'd like to do.

A 15-minute guided meditation (optional) concludes the program.

Copies are available to check out at the Library.

Location: Main Reading Room, Grafton Public Library.
