Young Scientists sponsored by YFCP

Join STEM Beginnings for a 6-week virtual series for children, ages 3-6. Children will learn STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) concepts through hands-on activities, story time and simple experiments.

This is an interactive class using Zoom and parents/caregivers are encouraged to help their child. A list of materials for families to prepare for each class will be provided weekly.

Registration will begin two weeks prior to each event. By registering for this event, you are registering for this one event, not the entire six-week program. If the event is full, you may still submit this form to be placed on the waiting list. Attendees on the waiting list will be added to our next session.  A minimum of eight families are required in order for the class to be held. If we do not receive the minimum number of registrants, this event may be canceled. A valid email address is required to register for all Grafton Public Library programs. A Zoom link will be sent to each registrant no later than twenty-four hours before the event is scheduled.   If you are unable to attend, please call the Grafton Public Library at 508-839-4649.

Siblings are welcome. Only one registration is required per family.

The “Young Scientists” series is sponsored by the YMCA Family & Community Partnership (YFCP), which is a Massachusetts Coordinated Family & Community Engagement (CFCE) Grant funded by the Department of Early Education and Care and awarded to the YMCA of Central Massachusetts.

Virtual Book Discussion: Reads Well with Others Book Group

Join us on Slack (see instructions below) for an online discussion of Gravity is the Thing, by Jaclyn Moriarty available in regular print, audio on CD, and through OverDrive/Libby in eAudio and eBook format and as a Hoopla eBook.

Description: "Twenty years ago, Abigail Sorenson's brother Robert went missing one day before her sixteenth birthday, never to be seen again. That same year, she began receiving scattered chapters in the mail of a self-help manual, the Guidebook, whose anonymous author promised to make her life soar to heights beyond her wildest dreams. The Guidebook's missives have remained a constant in Abi's life--a befuddling yet oddly comforting voice through her family's grief over her brother's disappearance, a move across continents, the devastating dissolution of her marriage, and the new beginning as a single mother and café owner in Sydney. Now, two decades after receiving those first pages, Abi is invited to an all-expenses paid weekend retreat to learn "the truth" about the Guidebook. It's an opportunity too intriguing to refuse. If Everything is Connected, then surely the twin mysteries of the Guidebook and a missing brother must be linked?"

Virtual Book Discussion: Inspirational Book Group

Join us on Slack (see instructions below) for an online discussion of Creativity Rules: Get Ideas Out of Your Head and Into the World, by Tina Seelig, available in Hoopla, as an eBook.

Description: "International bestselling author and Stanford University professor Tina Seelig adapts her wildly popular creativity course to a practical guide on how to put your best ideas into action. In Creativity Rules, she shares this wisdom, offering inspiration and guidance to transform ideas into reality. Readers will learn how to work through the four steps of The Invention Cycle: Imagination (envisioning things that do not yet exist), Creativity (applying your imagination to address a challenge), Innovation (applying creativity to generate unique solutions), and Entrepreneurship (applying innovation, to bring ideas to fruition, where our ideas then gain the power to inspire the imaginations of others). Using each step to build upon the last, you can create something much complex, interesting, and powerful."

Join us on Slack (see instructions below) for an online discussion of Carry On, by Rainbow Rowell, available in regular print, large print, as an audio on CD, Playaway, and through OverDrive/Libby as an eBook and eAudio.

Description: "Simon Snow just wants to relax and savor his last year at the Watford School of Magicks, but no one will let him. His girlfriend broke up with him, his best friend is a pest, and his mentor keeps trying to hide him away in the mountains where maybe he'll be safe. Simon can't even enjoy the fact that his roommate and longtime nemesis is missing, because he can't stop worrying about the evil git. Plus there are ghosts. And vampires. And actual evil things trying to shut Simon down. Simon is the most powerful magician the world has ever known, he never gets to relax and savor anything."
