Young Scientists

Join STEM Beginnings for a 6-week series for children, ages 3-6. Children will learn STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) concepts through hands-on activities, story time and simple experiments.

  • All children, ages 3-6, must be registered (including siblings) to attend in person classes.
  • Parents/caregivers are expected to supervise and help their child during class but may leave the room to care for an infant/busy toddler.
  • Materials for the lesson will be provided by STEM Beginnings for registered children, ages 3-6, however if extra materials are available due to absences, the teacher may share materials with siblings.
  • Siblings are welcome to watch and listen to the story but we ask that parents/caregivers help to manage disruptive behavior.
  • Space is limited to 12 children, ages 3-6. Please email or call the librarian if you can no longer attend so that a family on the waitlist can be contacted.
  • Hot beverages are not allowed due to child safety regulations from the Department of Early Education and Care, the YFCP funding source.
  • Please limit cell phone use and talking to one another while the STEM Beginnings teacher is presenting the lesson.
  • Adults and children should not attend class if not feeling well to avoid spreading illness to others. If your child has a cold with a thick runny nose or other contagious illnesses, we ask that he/she remain at home for as long as the symptoms exist. If a child has a fever, please wait 24 hours after the fever to attend class.

Thank you for your support of YFCP and STEM Beginnings Program!

The “Young Scientists” series is sponsored by the YMCA Family & Community Partnership (YFCP), a Massachusetts Coordinated Family & Community Engagement (CFCE) Grant program funded by the Department of Early Education & Care and awarded to the YMCA of Central Massachusetts.

Please note that program attendees must also comply with the Library's Unattended Child Policy:

  • 0-7 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian at all times;
  • 8-12 must be accompanied by parent/guardian remaining in the Library;
  • 13+ may be unaccompanied, provided child is able to use Library independently and follow the Library's Code of Conduct.

GUM Jam - Grafton Ukulele Musician's monthly meetup meets from 6:30-8pm on the second Wednesday of the month, year-round, lead by Eric Guerin, courtesy of Apple Tree Arts.

BYOU - bring your own ukulele or check out one of ours!

While we mostly work with Daily Ukulele, participants may bring or suggestion music to learn, and we plan to offer themed selections -- 80s night, 3 chords night, Beatles night -- if there is interest.

Willard House and Clock Museum: 50-Years of Collecting Excellence: An Illustrated Lecture

A program in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Willard House and Clock Museum and the loan and installation of a Benjamin Willard 1795 eight-day clock in the Library’s Historic Reading Room will be held on Monday November 14, 2022 at 7:00pm in the Community Room with a reception to follow. The clock was made by Benjamin Willard (1743-1803) here in the historic Grafton workshop preserved at the museum. Robert C. Cheney, Executive Director of the Willard House and Clock Museum will present "Willard House and Clock Museum: 50-Years of Collecting Excellence: An Illustrated Lecture."

The Willard House and Clock Museum is on the National Register of Historic Places and was the birthplace and home of four Willard clockmakers working from 1760-1800 here in Grafton. The museum is known as "The Center of Early American Clockmaking” and now features over 90 masterpiece Willard clocks and timepieces, family portraits, furniture, books and ephemera, including an important Thomas Jefferson document providing Simon Willard with a drawing and instructions for the installation of Willard’s clock at Jefferson College in 1826.

Robert C. Cheney, Grafton, Massachusetts is a third-generation clockmaker, dealer and nationally recognized authority on early clocks, watches and scientific instruments. He currently serves as Executive Director and Curator of the Willard House and Clock Museum in North Grafton, Massachusetts. Robert C. Cheney was recently (2018) honored as a Silver Star Fellow in the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors for his writing, lectures and leadership in the field of horology.

Refreshments will be served, including wine to guests of age with valid ID.

GPL Mystery Book Group

Join us on Tuesday November 15th at 7:30pm, in Room 202 for the GPL Mystery Book Group’s discussion of The Island by Ragnar Jónasson.

Description: "Autumn of 1987 takes a young couple on a romantic trip in the Westfjords holiday--a trip that gets an unexpected ending and has catastrophic consequences. Ten years later a small group of friends go for a weekend in an old hunting lodge in Elliðaey. A place completely cut off from the outside world, to reconnect. But one of them isn't going to make it out alive. And Detective Inspector Hulda Hermannsdóttir is determined to find the truth in the darkness. Ragnar Jonasson burst onto the American scene with Snowblind and Nightblind, the first two novels in the Ari Thor thriller series, and the praise was overwhelming. With The Darkness, he launched a new series featuring a completely new sleuth, Detective Inspector Hulda Hermannsdottir of the Reykjavik Police department. The Island is the second book in this series.”

Copies of the books are available in regular print, audio on CD and Playaway, so stop by the library to pick up a physical copy. It is also available as an Overdrive / Libby eBook and eAudio and as an eAudio on Hoopla.
