Get Lit - OUTDOOR!

Join us for an in-person, OUTDOOR meeting of Get Lit, a social book club designed for twenty and thirty something readers in the greater Haverhill area. We'll be meeting in GAR Park, across the street from the library, to discuss Bestiary by K-Ming Chang.

"With a poetic voice of crackling electricity, K Ming Chang is an explosive young writer who combines the wit and fabulism of Helen Oyeyemi with the magical realist aesthetic of Maxine Hong Kingston. Tracing one family's history from Mainland China to Taiwan, from Arkansas to California, Bestiary is a novel of migration, queer lineages, and womanhood."

The first five people to sign up and attend will receive a Get Lit-branded glass! All additional attendees will receive an HPL travel mug. All attendees will receive a Get Lit-branded coaster and bookmark!

Click on the link below to place a copy of the book on hold!

Virtual Tabletop Guild

An ancient darkness is on the rise as the Virtual Tabletop Guild continues the Age of Ashes campaign for Pathfinder 2nd Edition!

Nestled in the foothills of the Five Kings Mountains, the quaint town of Breachill has a proud tradition of assembling groups of adventurers to handle tasks beyond the skill and scope of their humble guardsmen. When during this month's Call for Heroes a humble goblin scholar beseeches the town council to investigate the signals for help from an abandonned Hellknight citadel, will our adventurers be up for the task? What strange creatures and bygone mysteries will they find hidden beneath Hellknight Hill?

Participants may create their own 1st level characters for Pathfinder 2nd edition to play as, or use available pregenerated characters. If you have any questions about this process or the system, feel free to send me an email!

The meeting will be conducted virtually via Discord and the Foundry virtual tabletop program.

--For Adults (18+) only.

Registration is required. A link to the Foundry game will be sent at least 15 minutes prior to event start time.

Registrants must have a stable internet connection, a microphone (integrated, external, or headset) and headphones/earbuds.

If you are interested in this program but are unable to attend, I would like to hear from you! Please send me an email at mvalenzuela@haverhillpl.org with any questions or concerns regarding program scheduling and/or content.

Storytelling in Opera - Virtual

Description: Guerilla Opera presents “Storytelling in Opera,” a visual spectacle that takes you on a journey from theatrical to cinematic forms of operatic storytelling. Explore Guerilla Opera’s unique repertoire, while experiencing how recent innovation and necessity has expended the realm of opera.

About the Instructor: Aliana de la Guardia is Cuban-American artist acclaimed for her “vocally fearless” performances that are “fizzing with theatrical commitment.” Artistic Director of Guerilla Opera and long-time company member, she has produced many newly commissioned operas tailor-made for her ferocious stage presence. In 2020 she received OPERA America’s Women Opera Network mentorship distinction paired with Wolf Trap Opera, as well as a NEFA Public Art Learning Fund Grant to pursue mentorship with Double Edge Theatre. She is the owner and founder of Dirty Paloma Voice Studio in Haverhill, MA, treasurer of Granite State National Association of Teachers of Singing, and on the Haverhill Multicultural Festival 2020 planning committee.

About Guerilla Opera: Guerilla Opera is one of Boston's most exciting young companies creating brave and engaging work. In daring performances Guerilla Opera has garnered a national reputation for innovative contemporary opera with The Boston Globe raving that “radical exploration remains the cornerstone of everything it does.”

Founded in 2007, they are an artist-led ensemble with a track record of over 25 world premiere operas. Their mission is to commission and reenvision new and experimental works custom-tailored to our artists; to champion cutting-edge music and immerse audiences in profound experiences; to be a model for creative authenticity and IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility); to inspire, influence and amplify emerging generations of artists. Their unique body of work ferociously confronts the status quo, eschews antiquated and stereotypical traditions of the art form of opera, examines stories through culturally focused and contemporary lenses, and brings new music to new audiences.

This program will be held on Zoom. We will send an email with the Zoom link on the day of the program.

Merrimack: The Resilient River - Virtual

Author Dyke Hendrickson will join us virtually for a talk based on his book Merrimack: The Resilient River: An Illustrated Profile of the Most Historic River in New England.

Hendrickson's book highlights the dramatic life of the Merrimack River, from the colorful days of the Native Americans to its current status as one of the most scenic recreational waterways in New England. The 117-mile river runs from central New Hampshire to Newburyport, Massachusetts, where it meets the Atlantic. Here the Coast Guard was born, and colonial trade thrived. The Industrial Revolution was launched in the riverside mills of Lowell, Massachusetts, and Manchester, New Hampshire. The science of clean drinking water was developed in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and the first successful labor action also took place in Lawrence. Thousands of immigrants worked in mills along the Merrimack, and this book tells their riveting stories. In the 70s, the once-filthy "Merrimuck" was cleaned up to serve again as one of the most popular waterways in New England. And the Merrimack is still an essential resource. It serves as the source of drinking water for a half-million people. Many have seen part of the Merrimack River, but this unique book provides info and images about all sectors of this great waterway.

This program will be held on Zoom. We will send an email with the Zoom link on the day of the program.
